There is no dance like Tango that has so much connection, intensity and passion. Tango is the dance of love as its beauty grabs ones attention leaving a desire to see more. It creates exciting and attractive images that inspire many associations, as well as interpretations such as passion, sensuality, gender, nationality, and a universal form of art. Tango evokes an elusive relationship between music and dance. “A Feeling that is danced, a secret danced between two people, a walking embrace. It’s not in the feet, it’s in the heart! It’s about the connection of feelings rather than about the choreography”. This statement is a true testament of what Tango represents when analysing the ‘Tango scene’ in the movie ‘Take the Lead’.

In the movie, ‘Take the Lead’ the tango scene starts disjointed with the female entering the basement. She is intense as she enters, walking gracefully down the stairs, with her head raised up, as she briskly walks across the floor to the music player. In the time from when she walks down the stairs till the end of the dance, her intensity remains, engaging little eye contact with the other students in the room. Her entrance makes quite an impact with the people in the basement as they are drawn by her stunning looks and reason for being there. The male lead then follows with a purpose, purely focussed on the female. The female begins with seductive moves to draw her male dancer to her. He initiates and suggests a move as the submissive partner accepts and interprets it and follows. The dancers are intertwined, engaged in a dialogue of limbs, as they gently float across and utilise the small area of the basement floor as they caress each other, creating a moving seduction. The movements are sensual and passionate. The leader continually invites the follower to take a step, and the partner responds in a style that is unique with raw new energy. There are fast kicks, spins, tilts, poses, small jumps and the free movement of legs …show more content…
The appearance of disorder and a feeling of roughness were visible. There were chairs and desks stacked against the wall and around the room with graffiti seen on sections of the walls. Natural lighting filtered in from large windows. This natural lighting cast many shadows on the characters and floor adding to the rawness of the scene. The floor space was minimal, however the dancers covered all of the area available. The female wore a tango inspired black, flowing, seductive dress with her hair slicked back into a bun with a striking large red flower to the side. She wore black tango shoes that complimented the outfit. The male lead wore a black suit and white shirt. He carried his jacket over his shoulder and threw it away when the dance began adding to the intensity of the scene. The music was called ‘Asi Se Baila el Tango’ or translated as ‘This is how to dance tango’ is a song symbolising the power struggle between classes. It has a unique place in the history of tango and the Argentine society (Tanguito, 2014). The song was chosen for the ‘Tango Scene’ with this distinct purpose in mind, to teach the students in the movie that it doesn’t matter what class you come from or what hardships you face, the Tango is for everyone. ‘Asi Se Baila el Tango’ is a repetitive up-tempo style of music allowing the dancing style to flow with the smooth
The next work of the program, Courtly Airs and Dances, is a multi-movement work composed by Ron Nelson. The piece is split into six movements: Intrada, Basse Danse, Pavane, Saltarello, Sarabande, and Allemande. Each of these present distinct characteristics that separate it from each other movement, yet all are united by being a style of dance. The first movement, Intrada, presents a fanfare-like opening to the multi-movement work. The trumpets and brass section as a whole lead this, as they create a sense of nobility. The key is major and the tempo is one that could be described as allegretto—it is not a fast tempo, yet more brisk than an andante pace. The texture is homophonic, as there are different parts being performed by different
The auteur theory is a view on filmmaking that consists of three equally important premises: technical competence, interior meaning, and personal signature of the director. Auteur is a French word for author. The auteur theory was developed by Andrew Sarris, a well-known American film critic. Technical competence of the Auteur deals with how the director films the movie in their own style. Personal signature includes recurring themes that are present within the director’s line of work with characteristics of style, which serve as a signature. The third and ultimate premise of the Auteur theory is the interior meaning which is basically the main theme behind the film.

People do not take into account the impact that colonialism had on Mexico and Mexico’s culture of dance and music. The merging of Indigenous tradition and European culture left a strange mark in Mexico, where both those diverse cultures were combined into its own Mexican identity. There is no bigger example of this than the traditional Mexican dance, of the state of Michoacán el danze de los viejetos or in English the dance of the old men. What the dance used to represent pre and post the conquering by Spain is radically different, since Mexico itself changed through colonization. The dance of the old men is still being danced now but the original meaning and what it represents now has changed,
Dynamic characters are built by dynamic movement in film. Whether the character is sitting down giving a lecture, or is a ballerina dancing on stage, character are born through movement. Movement in emotion, or physical, a characters action and re-actions are what draw audiences into their story. The characters in the movie Take the Lead gain power through their character transformations through dance, their movement on the dance floor directly impacts the way they carry themselves through life. In this paper I will explore three scenes, each scene will show different levels of progression in each character’s life, and I will show how the characters gain more power in their own lives the more successful they become with the movement of dance.
Li’s passion for ballet shows on and off stage through his arabesques, flexibility, fouettés, grande jeté and pirouettes that were nothing less than perfection. I understood that becoming a dancer requires commitment, passion and having a great memory as there’s many moves, routines and ballet terms that you need to learn. When I was performing on stage, I felt free and that I could own the stage as it felt like it was my second home. I also felt complete within myself just as Li felt. To perform on stage, you need to be light and graceful along with connecting to the music using precise steps, poses and formal gestures. The film used dance, music, scenery, and costumes to portray a story characterised by Li’s dance. Classical ballet dancers require the utmost grace and I’ve found that you also need a tremendous level of concentration and memory. This portrays when his choreographer Ben Stevenson asked Li Cunxin to replace the main male role due to an injury on the day of the performance to memorise new dances and perform them in front of an enormous crowd. Many of my performances have been in a group where we all need to be in sync and work together. This film highlighted that in order to become a professional ballet dancer, you have to prepare to work extremely hard no matter how gruelling the schedule is in order to
This paper will be a detailed description of what dance was like in the 1950’s specifically focusing on 1954 to 1959. It will also go beyond to demonstrate how the style of dancing is a direct reflection of the society during that time period. The topic will be presented in class and a brief reflection will be included in this paper.
This dance is a very close partner dance, it brings the dancers closer together, which allows the dance flow more. It originated in Buenos Aires in working class ports in the area of Rio de La Plata. Tango dancers would go to brothels where there will be many immigrants of different races, and they will dance closely together, which brought upon Tango. The brothels also consisted of prostitutes, in which they were used to dance with men. Tango was considered an action where a prostitute and the pimp would dance, and the women were obscene by society. This “acting out” allowed both men and women to rub their bodies together. Due to Tango being a “close dance”, some women would have to wear bumpers to protect themselves from rubbing against their male partners because it felt weird to them. Tango’s popularity came from the lack of women. This absence of women caused men to compete with each other to attract a woman by their moves, which caused the men to dance with each
The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost magical. The Romantic Ballet Period introduced the aspects of theme, costume, and new technique to the dance world and its influences are still seen in contemporary works in ballet.
This variation is to be set up around several different high traffic areas of the Paris Las Vegas, the first of which is the check-in and reception area of the hotel. Two dancing couples will be dressed in bellhop-themed costuming and will perform several dance numbers, including a scin...
“The Mission” is based on a true story that occurred around the borderlands of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil in the years 1750’s according to the film and history. The Treaty of Madrid of 1750 with the Spanish and Portuguese caused both havoc and death for the people of the Guarini and the members of the Jesuits. The Jesuits, members of the church, tried to bring Christianity and civilization to the natives while keeping at peace with Spain and Portugal. The Jesuits were the teachers for the natives; Teaching them not only the Christian religion but also civilization. Father Gabriel, a Jesuit, is first introduced in the film when he is showing his respects to a former Jesuit priest killed by the natives. He walks through the South American
Based on a true story, the movie ‘Lone Survivor’ features four Navy SEALs that set out on a mission to Afghanistan with orders to capture and kill Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. The Navy SEALS are detected by villagers and the mission was compromised. Ultimately, the mission had been discovered and the men found themselves surrounded by dozens of Taliban soldiers. One of the Navy SEAL soldiers managed to dispatch to base and retrieve assistance but the Taliban shoot down the helicopter. During battle, three of the Navy SEAL soldiers were killed leaving one still alive.
Whether it is the fire dances of the native Hawaiians, or the Tango from Spain, dance is a part of every culture. This event is not an event I would usually attend. I am not into art of any kind except music. At first, there were two reasons I went to this performance.
A ballet dancer’s general intention when performing any piece is to convey a message to the audience. A message is relayed through the dancer’s strategic facial expressions and body movements. Each movement has a purpose in articulating the dancer’s energy, and confidence within themselves to express the emotions and inspire the audience (Lucas). A dancer’s energy and
