It can't be denied – Taylor Swift is a cultural phenomenon. Considering she's arguably the most popular pop star in the world at this moment, it's hardly a surprise that her every move is under close scrutiny by fans and critics alike. Being under constant surveillance is not exactly easy, and we can sympathize with that. However, when it comes to her actual songs, you can't deny Taylor has had some missteps along the way to super-stardom. Here is a list of 5 worst songs by Taylor Swift and why we hate them: 5. Red While 'Red' might be Taylor's most well-rounded album to date, its singles are not all that impressive. The album's namesake is one of the worst offenders, with its various influences combining to form a song that is decidedly …show more content…
Compared to most of her work, this song simply lacks substance and crosses a thin line between peppiness and annoyance. This was also Taylor's first flirtation with dubstep, and the results were predictably disappointing. With dubstep breakdowns becoming so commonplace in today's pop landscape, did we really need another attempt at it? Before the arrival of the dubstep element halfway through the song, 'I Knew You Were Trouble' seemed to be going in a promising direction; however, as soon as those heavy-handed beats take over, the songs turns into a warbled copy of its old …show more content…
Bad Blood (feat. Kendrick Lamar) The song's music video has one of the most star-studded casts in recent memory, with Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham and Hayley Williams joining Taylor and Kendrick in a high-production, Matrix-influenced story about spies, betrayal and revenge. The music video itself is daring and provocative; however, the song it's based on is anything but. 'Bad Blood' feels like Taylor deciding to show the world that she understands the concept of a metaphor – she makes the point so blindingly obvious that the song becomes a parody in no time. Even for a Swift song, 'Bad Blood' is ridiculously bratty in nature. This time, however, the beat and the chorus are not there to save her and the song loses steam long before the finish line. If you want our opinion about the matter, fumbling a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar should be a legal offense. Pop-rap songs need to be performed very carefully in order not to seem grating, and 'Bad Blood' certainly doesn't
In 2013, the self-titled visual album BEYONCÉ sold almost eight hundred thirty thousand digitally in the first three days, while her sixth number one and second visual album, Lemonade, only sold four hundred ninety thousand digitally in the first week. Although Beyoncé’s second visual album wasn’t numerically successful, both show a vulnerable, an artistic, and a controversial side of Beyoncé. Both albums have surprising visuals and stunning lyrical content with either an obvious meaning or a meaning we have yet to figure out, such as the famous line, “You better call Becky with the good hair.” (Beyoncé, “Sorry”). BEYONCÉ and Lemonade show that Beyoncé tries to better herself as an artist and make herself more vulnerable.
“You Was Right” by Lil Uzi Vert is fairly easy to understand lyrically. The essence of the song deals with unfaithfulness in a relationship as well as the aftermath. Lil Uzi Vert spends a large portion of the song admitting his mistakes to his presumed girlfriend in hopes of making things right between them. The song starts off with the hook, which rests upon the premise of how Lil Uzi Vert should have stayed loyal rather than taking another girl home with him. For example, he says, “You was right, I was wrong” (6) in an attempt to console his girlfriend and apologize. Following the hook, the first verse centers on Lil Uzi Vert’s riches due to his success as a rapper. He ties that in to his relationship by expressing how he wants to share his wealth with his girlfriend. At this stage in the song, Lil Uzi Vert is attempting to win his girlfriend back with his money and general success as a rapper. The hook then repeats itself to indicate that the argument between Lil Uzi Vert and his girlfriend is still continuing. The second verse signifies an escalation in their conflict, as he says, “You just locked the door, so I gotta text you” (42). His girlfriend is refusing to even listen
Ranging from newspapers and radios to walkouts opposing warfare, teenage girls are active participants in a variety of social movements. In Jessica Taft’s book, “Rebel Girls” the experiences and perspectives of girl activists serving as agents for social change are illustrated. Taft introduces readers to a wide scope of girl activists from various whereabouts such as Mexico City and Buenos Aires. Taft’s work brings authenticity to the voices of female activists who are engaged in the struggle for social justice, where she is emphasizing their importance to social movements. The book also presents the process in which girls construct their activist identities.
Taylor Swift’s debut album contained such songs as Our Song, Teardrops on my Guitar, and Picture to Burn. Swift’s approach is perhaps more country than the Dixie Chicks in a few regards. The banjo is featured throughout the record and more traditional country percussion, as well as more country-style lyrics. However, she stands out with a crystal-clear voice and excellent use of metaphor throughout her songwriting. In terms of musicality, Swift may not be the most gifted, aside from her voice. But in her songs, her personality shines through in a way that pulls light through into your ears, noted especially in her song Love
Gaining recognition through Food & Liquor, Fiasco’s popularity has grown tremendously. Much of the reason was due to his approach to rap. While he does rap about mainstream themes such as sex, money, and drugs, Fiasco also shares his concerns about the American government and politics, foreign affairs, and racism in our culture, capturing a more mature audience’s attention. Through his music, Lupe Fiasco represents the voice of Modern America by informing his listeners about the modern corrupt practices in the United States and asserting his opinions on them through his music. In his song “Bitch Bad”, Fiasco describes how the vulgar word “bitch” is used throughout American society carelessly and in ways it shouldn’t be due it's degrading denotation. His song “Strange Fruition” reiterates the message in Billie Holiday’s largely popular song “Strange Fruit” and incorporates the modern take on racism in the United States. The messages in both these songs portray the depravity in present American culture.
The big A launched its new ad for Apple Music entitled "Drake vs. Bench Press" featuring their long-time advocate Drake. On the video, Canadian rapper is seen listening to Apple Music and uses the 'Pop WorkOut' playlist includes the song of Taylor Swift 'Bad Blood'. While lifting the weight as his daily routine in the gym, he starts lip-syncing when his friend left the room since he doesn’t want to be seen by anyone. Being carried away with the tune, he starts dancing for a while and then he continued working out. But Drake ends up dropping the bench press on his chest and singing along with the song. When he wasn’t able to catch the rhythm, the award-winning rapper danced in his hilarious moves in front of the mirror. As we all know, this
"DAMN" contains fourteen songs, each with powerful messages. Kendrick Lamar uses his song LOYALTY, as a platform to discuss the “value and necessity of complete trust, faithfulness, and dedication in both platonic and romantic relationships” (cite). Through the repetition of the lyrics “tell me who you are loyal to”, not only gets stuck in the listeners head but it causes them to question the songs deeper meaning. When the video was released it became clear that the song is about a volatile relationship between man and women; portraying the power each one of them holds.
Throughout Drake’s musical career, the theme he raps about the most is the male/female relationship. As I referenced it before the relationship between men and women is one of the pillars of rap. His most commercially successful and loved songs are about the relationships he’s had with a woman. Instead of talking about selling drugs or violent lyrics, Drake raps about his love of women and the relationships he has with him. He talks about the mistakes he’s made in the relationship one song in particular “Sooner than Later” he talks about how he has this girl he loves but let’s her get away from him and doesn’t realize it until she’s gone when he raps, “I forgot to call on your birthday/ You swear you’re the last thing on my mind, yeah/ There
Chances are if anyone has listened to the radio in the past few years, they have heard the song “Blurred Lines.” Produced and written by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, T.I. (also known as Clifford Jr. Harris), and legally Marvin Gaye, “Blurred Lines” quickly became a nationwide hit when it was released in 2013 that was broadcasted through radios and televisions all over the world. With a contagious and an enjoyable beat, but such sexual and vulgar words, there have been many different ways that the song has been perceived by audiences. Radio stations and social media love and praise the song for having an exciting and an energizing beat, thus its quick fame around the world. However, many people believe that the song is a far cry from fun
The star text of a celebrity can help to decipher their image and transitions they may undergo. In order to better understand these transitions, one must know the definition of a star text. A star text is the sum of everything we affiliate with celebrities, which includes their body of work, promotion, publicity, and audience participation (Jackson, 08/09/16). One must note that “celebrity doesn 't happen because someone has extraordinary qualities – it is discursively constructed by the way in which the person is publicised and meanings about them circulate” (O 'Shaughnessy and Stadler 424). Destiny Hope Cyrus, “an American singer and actress, became a sensation in the television series
Despite the fact that Lady Mary disputes Swift’s view of women, she inadvertently supports the societal expectation that women be physically striking. In response to Swift’s accusation about women’s filth, Lady Mary presents the woman as bold and beautiful by proclaiming, “The nymph grown Furious roared by God / ‘The blame lies all in Sixty odd’” (74-75). Both of these lines emphasize the expectation for women to be beautiful in different ways. Lady Mary’s use of the word “nymph” raises an image of women as inherently and divinely beautiful. In addition, by placing the blame totally on the man for the disappointing intercourse, she denies what he had previously claimed about her disgusting state. Lady Mary shows the woman as a perfectly beautiful
Swift’s debut song isn’t like the others. Her big debut song wasn’t about revenge or heartbreak, but rather her inspiration, Tim McGraw. ‘Tim McGraw” was written in Taylor’s math class when she was 16, along side of Liz Rose. Not only does it remind her of her true inspiration, but also of her un-named summer love, who was going to college, and had to dump Swift. But, not only was this her big debut, it also happened to be her first ever published song. It was published June 19, 2006 by Big Machine Records, and has sold over a million downloads. It reached about 40 and 6 on the “Billboard Top 100” and “Hot Country Songs” in the United States.
Robin Thicke has a popular songs called Blurred Lines which was released in mid 2013. The song spread quickly and rose straight to the top of the charts. This is where the song remained for the next ten weeks; which was the first time any single lasted that long since 2005. A majority of people had at least heard the song, if they weren’t able to sing every word of it. Many people found the song to be undeniable catchy, but not many people looked at the subtext of the lyrics. As the song remained popular for a longer period of time, people became aware of what the song lyrics were actually saying. The literal lines of the song talks about meeting a girl and not knowing if there is blurred lines because she’s a good girl. Once the lyrics were analyzed deeper, many realized that the song was not as innocent as it seemed.
Ever since I was in eighth grade, I have been obsessed with Taylor Swift. She has been my role model since I was thirteen. When you look at most singers today, they have to be singing about drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, or performing half-dressed. You never see Taylor Swift doing anything that she would be ashamed of later in life. On the other hand, she has had many relationships that have lasted short time periods. At least, she is not getting married for 72 days or even 24 hours such Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears. This is why I chose to write a research paper on her.
At the young age of just twenty-four, singer/songwriter Taylor Swift has already made her mark on the world. With four platinum records, several hit singles, and seven Grammy Awards, the young songwriter has been a source of both entertainment and inspiration for people of all ages. Unlike other artists, Taylor Swift is completely fearless with her songwriting. Whether she’s singing about her first day of school, falling in love, or breaking up with a boyfriend, Swift always shares intimate details about her personal life in her lyrics. Many people love this quality about her, but others think Swift gives women a bad reputation by appearing to be a flawless and blameless victim in her songs. Regardless of the negative thoughts some people have about her, Taylor Swift is undoubtedly a huge success and a role model for teenage girls all over the world.
