Taylor Swift is one of the biggest pop-country sensations of the 21st century. With over billions of sells, she is also one of the top selling artists of our generation. But what makes her so unique? Are there not other pop-country artists out there? This is the story of Taylor Swift, and how she came to be.
Taylor Swift was born on December thirteenth, 1989 in Reading, Pennsylvania. At five years of age, Swift had begun writing songs and performing for her family. But it wasn’t until about 4th grade that she really discovered her passion and talent for music, after winning an award for her poem, “Monster in my Closet”. “I think I first realized I wanted to be in country music and be an artist when I was 10. And I started dragging my parents to festivals, and fairs, and karaoke contests, and I did that for about a year before I came to Nashville for the first time. I was 11 and I had this demo CD of me singing Dixie Chicks and Leanne Rimes songs.” Swift said. “I was the girl who didn’t get invited to parties. My friends turned into the girls who stood in the corner and talked about me. But as soon as I picked up a guitar…I literally played until my fingers bled. My mom had to tape them up, and you can imagine how popular that made me: “Look at her fingers. So weird”. But for the first time in my life, those girls could say anything they wanted about me, because I was just going to go home after school and write a song about it.“ Swift, as said in the quote, wasn’t exactly the most popular girl in school, but she sure showed her “friends”. Who would want to settle with knowing that in school they talked about a girl behind her back, and she just so happens to now be a pop-country sensation? Swift’s childhood is really what began...

...Taylor is almost half of Leto’s age. It may seem like Taylor is just another “Hollywood Flirt”, but that trait is what helps us stay entertained with her music about finding love and being shattered by “the cold hard ground”.
Swift’s debut song isn’t like the others. Her big debut song wasn’t about revenge or heartbreak, but rather her inspiration, Tim McGraw. ‘Tim McGraw” was written in Taylor’s math class when she was 16, along side of Liz Rose. Not only does it remind her of her true inspiration, but also of her un-named summer love, who was going to college, and had to dump Swift. But, not only was this her big debut, it also happened to be her first ever published song. It was published June 19, 2006 by Big Machine Records, and has sold over a million downloads. It reached about 40 and 6 on the “Billboard Top 100” and “Hot Country Songs” in the United States.
In the beginning of the story we see that Taylor is an average teenage girl living with a single mother. She says, “But I stayed in school. I was not the smartest or even particularly outstanding but I was there and staying out of trouble” (3). She was called “Missy” for a lot of her childhood but when she was three she said, “I stamped my foot and told my mother not to call me Marietta but Miss Marietta” (2). From Taylor’s childhood I find that she had a sense of personal pride and could defend herself. These really are great attributes and we really see these attributes grow more and mature throughout the story.
Times have changed, and along with the times so has country music. American country music lovers have went from Loretta Lynn and Waylon Jennings, just two of the many classic oldies, to Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan, two very appealing country music artists. However, it is not only the tune of the music that has changed, it is the image, the appeal, and overall the type of icons the media is portraying these modern music stars as. Icons such as Lynn and Jennings had identifiable features within their music as well as their appearance that spoke sweet southern belle and rugged twang. Whereas Underwood’s and Bryan’s appeal now is much more sexualized than it was during the oldies. These changes affect the way modern day singers are marketed compared to former country music stars, instead of focusing on talent it is now looks.

We might have last heard of him as Jen Aniston’s long-time partner and Taylor Swift's unconfirmed ex-beau but it is still evident that John Mayer is a blessing to the music industry due to his meaningful tracks and irrefutable talent. With a strong affinity for his guitar, John Mayer took the whole music planet by storm by singing songs that speak of maturity, daily battles in life and being able to overcome it and the obliterating oblivion by exposing yourself to the harms of life in general. Born John Clayton Mayer in the glorious year of 1977, this American singer slash songwriter slash producer has extended how great music is to him. He worked wonders into flipping different genres such as blues, folk, rock, country, soul and mainstream pop into a John Mayer revamped version.

"God put us here on the carnival ride, we close our eyes never knowing, where it will take us" (Wheel of the World quoted In "Biography"). Those were the words of Wheel of the World that inspired Carrie Underwood to write her latest album. At only 13 years old, she recorded her first album ("Carrie Underwood Biography"). Underwood also participated in several different competitions around the US to prepare herself to audition for American Idol in 2004 ("Biography"). After winning this contest, she continued to stay humbly as her fame grew. Her contributions to country music are demonstrated by her career and proves beyond a doubt that the Country Music Hall of Fame should induct this singer. She has shown her value through her major works, charities and influences, and professional morals.
Of all musical genres country music is perhaps the one most influenced by a male presence. Country music is often associated with the classic cowboy strumming a guitar around a campfire or riding his horse with a guitar strapped to his back. Even the politics of country music is inclined towards a male-dominated, republican, conservative, pro-war stance (Spong 184). The stereotypical women of country music “behave properly” and passively follow the same values as men do. Therefore, in 2003 when the Dixie Chicks, a three member all female country music band, became the top selling female group of all time it was quite an accomplishment. Their success began in 1997 with an image that embraced their versatility. Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, who are sisters, played fiddle and banjo and provided background vocals to lead vocalist Natalie Maines, gifted with a strong, clear voice. Maines stood out from the others with her forceful stage presence. They wore feminine, bling infused, non-countrified outfits. They were pretty to look at and kind of goofy in demeanor (129). The kind of young women fans could imagine having a lot of fun with, but also the kind that young women could identify with through their music. Songs like “Goodbye Earl” described a strong woman who has had enough of her abusive husband and ends up killing him. However, the band delivered it in a style that was far from morose. It sent a clear message of girl power for many women (129). Many accolades followed from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association (CMA) which included Entertainer of the Year, Top Vocal Group, and album of the Year (Towner 293). During the first five years of their career they sold 28 million copies of the three records...

The analysis revealed that participants in the rock and classical music categories didn’t have an effect in their mood. The results for rock and classical music did not supported the hypothesis, which rock music causes a person to have an aggressive mood, and classical music will lead to a calmer mood. The results from this data support from previous literature research such as the pop category. The results could also interpret as support for (Hargreaves, 1999). People make their music preferences based on the emotional state they are in (Hargreaves, 1999). The analysis revealed that pop music scored higher than students who had rock or classical. There wasn’t no effect between rock music and aggressive mood. Classical music didn’t have a relationship between classic music and calm mood. The results of this study wouldn’t be able to support (Jordana Mena, 2007). This consists of classical music being composed with different emotions based on the key and time signature it is on. If the classical piece is written in a higher key then they saw different mood responses than the classical pieces written in a low key (Jordan Mena, 2007). This study has provided that music is more than just a piece, of a lyric, beat, or instrument it has been proven that music can help people ...

The way Taylor Swift is promoting the prevention of bullying, and protesting for social change is very effective, because through her usage of similes in her song’s lyrics, and how she gives a more detail picture with her video where she connects with does who are victims of bullies. “You, with your words like knives/ And swords and weapons that you use against me/ You have knocked me off my feet again/ Got me feeling like a nothing…” This is a way of connecting with her viewers because its a clear picture of how bullies continue with the same routine being judgmental, and making their “prey” sad, disappointed of themselves, and fell like a nothing. “Physical bullying increases in elementary school, peaks in middle school and declines in high school. Verbal abuse, on the other hand, remains constant.” This quote helps to understand the idea that swift is trying to give to society and to convince that we need to change and help decrease bullying and decrease the drop out rate. Taylor Swift also makes the statement of “Someday I’ll be living in a big ole city/ and all you’re ever gonna be is mean…” in her song because she wants to emphasize that bullies wont make it to be anything else than bullies and that the weaker man is going to have a great life and become a stronger man. This is another way that Swift indirectly connects with her viewers by encouraging them to never give up on life and go pass what bullies will never
Taylor Swift deserves to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame for her outstanding awards and achievements she has received. One of the criteria to be inducted in the the Country Music Hall of Fame is that the person has to have a scope of activity. The criteria also states that the musician being inducted must have outstanding awards in the country music field. Swift has received many awards and achievements for various categories that set her away from other artists in the industry. “Taylor Swift became the youngest recipient ever of the entertainer of the year award at the 2009 Country Music Awards” is one of the best awards that she has received (“All The Awards”). Popular music is any music since industrialization in the mid-1800’s and is preferred by the middle class. It covers many genres such as rock, country, R&B, hip-hop, and rap.
Ever since I was in eighth grade, I have been obsessed with Taylor Swift. She has been my role model since I was thirteen. When you look at most singers today, they have to be singing about drugs or alcohol, using vulgar language, or performing half-dressed. You never see Taylor Swift doing anything that she would be ashamed of later in life. On the other hand, she has had many relationships that have lasted short time periods. At least, she is not getting married for 72 days or even 24 hours such Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears. This is why I chose to write a research paper on her.
Jonathan Swift was born on November 30, 1667 in Ireland to English parents, Jonathan and Abigail. His father, Jonathan, died shortly after his birth, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister alone. In Ireland, Swift was dependent on a nanny for three years because his mother moved to England. The young man was educated because of the patronage of his Uncle, Godwin Swift. Godwin sent him to Kilkenny Grammar School at age six, which was one of the best primary schools in Ireland at the time. Although the transition from extreme poverty to a private school education was hard, he made it easier by becoming friends with William Congreve; a future poet. At age fourteen Godwin put him through Trinity College at Dublin where he completed his Bachelors Degree. Swift later completed his M. A. at Oxford in 1692. Swifts mother wanted him to be successful so, she sent him to go work as a secretary under Sir William Temple, an established essayist and graduate from Cambridge. Because Temple was a prominent parliamentary figure Swift was exposed too much literature during this time period (1689-1699), which shaped his books later on. While working under Sir William Temple, Swift lived in Moor Park, Farnham. During his time living at Moor Park he met Stella, also known as Ester Johnson, which influenced and inspired his work, Journal to Stella.
Whether the views about Taylor Swift are positive or negative, she still has been extremely successful. Not only has she made lots of money because of her hit singles, platinum records and sold out concert tours, but she has also found a unique way to connect with her fans. Taylor Swift is both praised and ridiculed because of her music and the way she perceives certain situations, but the way I see it, there are going to be positive and negative aspects of every form of media. What sets Taylor Swift apart from the rest though, it how handles herself with grace, hard work and determination and I think that is something that everyone should respect and admire.
