Students Pledge Not to Swear It is important to create a harmonic atmosphere build of respect starting with every single action that shows a sign of respect. Even though it is underestimated, swearing is one of the biggest sign of disrespect that can be expressed in the classroom, for words hurt more than actions. Moreover, an Advance Fashion Marketing senior class from Bremerton High School in Washington started a campaign to stop swearing because they believed that it is not professional or respectful to swear. The primary objective of the campaign called, “Dare Not to Swear” was to improve and promote respect in their high school first to serve as a role model for middle school. The high school campaign, “Dare Not to Swear” was brain-stormed …show more content…
Besides wristbands, the students invest the $1000 buying t-shirts, pledge sheets, and information flyers. Furthermore, they sent invitation to specific student groups and letters to the school staff to encourage students to sign the pledge. To make improve the advertisement of the campaign, the students asked the school’s sport teams to include blue and gold in their uniform during kick-off. After observing the success of the “Dare Not to Swear” campaign, other teachers started to come up with techniques to reduce swearing. Teachers started to include lessons for inappropriate swearing in school, lessons to develop a paragraph about the campaign, and even extra push-ups for the sports team every time they sweat. The students set up a campaign table during lunch hour for students to pledge not to swear; moreover, a couple students walked through the cafeteria with clipboards and sign-up sheets to get students to sign the pledge. However, the campaign was not only successful within the school, for the teacher sent e-mail to local newspapers, radio, and televisions followed up by calls letting the media know about the campaign. In addition, the teacher asked the mayor of Bremerton to proclaim October 26th as “Bremerton High School Dare Not to Swear Day” The proclamation was read in television during a daily televised …show more content…
It is amazing how students can come up with these ideas and develop such a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to such project. In my classroom, I would also incorporate a class project that would help the school and the community. I would have the students work on the project throughout the year, so I could help them with any extra ideas and see the actions they are taking towards the project. The final project would have to show a clear impact in the community by teaching the students about a safety, health, or educational issue that is common in either high school or in the community. Students will do their research to gather information, then they will use this information to implement an action plan; finally, they will take this action plan to inform students and the
Finally, for homework I would assign the reading of excerpts of “Warriors Don’t Cry”, the memoir of Melba Pattillo Beals, one of the Little Rock Nine. I would ask the students to pretend that they were a student at Central High in 1957 and write a page long diary entry about what one would be seeing and how one would be feeling at this time. All of these activities would promote student-centered learning in that they are free to arrive at their conclusions independently, and they would help develop Formal Operational skills through hypothetical deductive logic.
Swearing has the ability to get someone in a whole load of trouble at the dinner table with their mother but could also be their choice of words when they accidently stub their toe on the coffee table in the living room. Natalie Angier discusses this controversial topic of words that shouldn’t be said in her article feature in The New York Times, “Almost Before We Spoke, We Swore”. Provoked by a recently proposed bill to increase fines for using swear words on television, Angier analyzes not only the impact of swearing, but also where the desire to speak obscene words comes from. She references many credible studies and sources as she unfolds her argument. She uses a diverse slew of studies, experiments, and famous pieces of literature and

The first point I’d like to make is that profanity is far too prominent in the television and movies we watch and the music we listen to. Lyrics with “swear words” are no stronger, nor any more passionate than lyrics with other strong, emotionally charged words. Some may argue that a character who swears on television may be “properly portraying the average American usage of profanity,” but let me ...
In an effort to maintain peace, safety and a disciplined environment conducive to effective teaching and learning, many schools have adopted the zero tolerance policy. This philosophy was originally created in the 1990’s as an approach towards drug enforcement to address the rampant use, possession and sales of drugs in schools (Jones, 2013). Today, this policy is used to mandate the application of pre-determined consequences of violation of stated rules. These rules may pertain to a number of issues; drugs, bullying, theft, and corporal punishment.
I think the concept of Kobod’s box was a good idea, but adjustments would have to be made in order to make sure everyone could participate. I think doing random acts of kindness helps students learn about subjects that can tie into school, as well as real life situations. I liked that Torey used cooking as a way to teach the students about reading and math, as many recipes feature both. I also think cooking activities can be more fun for students as they are hands on. I also liked Torey’s use of imagination to transport the children to oceans or the wilderness. I believe this activity sparks creativity in children and would be a good technique to teach them about adjectives and imagery. My favorite of Hayden’s techniques and the one I would implement is the of traffic lights to signal a student’s behavior for the day. I have seen this technique used in many classrooms I have observed and it is a good visual way to keep student’s behavior in
Project Citizen is an annual project where people in the 7th grade must identify a problem with Edgewood Middle School or the community and come up with a solution for the problem. In past years of Project Citizen, there have been many meaningful changes to Highland Park and Edgewood. Some of these were recycling bins in Edgewood and traffic lights and stop signs where they were needed. Before these ideas were set into place, nobody realized how much they were needed. It is a program that can be very impactful on our community.
Salida Elementary has academically successful staff members. Together everyone could collaborate and come up with a program that would be motivating and exciting. We could also work physical education into the day where extra hours would not have to be added and learning in the classroom would not be affected.
This engagement must be to involve the stakeholders in the school. The district and school leaders must encourage the community belief that if the school is successful the surrounding community will be successful. Through this partnership the time, talent and treasure of the stakeholders must be solicited to ensure the success of the school. Reciprocity of this investment should be given as well. Students could be required to participate in community service within the neighborhood or take responsibility for cleaning parcels of the area.
Students are being bullied, bringing weapons and drugs to school, and fighting every day for numerous reasons. Uniforms would decrease bullying and make each student feel equal and not because they can’t afford the name brand items that other students wear. All students should be required to wear the same uniform, which would make each student feel more comfortable attending school. The uniforms could be a plain solid colored polo with khaki pants or blue jeans. Having a dress code would prevent the display of gang activity within the school and increase the safety of students in our community. Peer pressure pulls many students to react in ways they should not. For example, students wear clothing with multiple pockets and could easily carry weapons or items that are not permitted at school. Uniforms would increase the safety of students and allow them to learn in the best environment possible. In 2013, in Virginia, classroom discipline improved with a high of 85 percent and the student’s safety 79
We live in a world where any type of swearing or cursing is ubiquitous. It is almost impossible to not hear a swear word when in public places or even at home. Not much can be done about the swearing situation as it is sometimes seen as a rebellious act or as an intensifier that adds no meaning but adds an “emotional punch” to any utterance. Swear words, especially the “F-word” and words involving sexual terms or racial slurs are looked down on. People using swear words are seen as uneducated, vulgar or low class people. Swear words are often attached to stereotypes when it comes down to who swears the most between men and women and gender roles come into play here. This will be explained and described further into the essay. Many people get offended by swear words, no matter what age, but that is because everyone has a different offensiveness threshold. One word that is offensive to one person may be the word used regularly by another person.
Firstly, etiquette makes an agreable and a peaceful classroom. These days, there is a misconception that etiquette is about formal behavior. The foundation of etiquette is kindness to others, treating others as you would like to be treated. Although many of its rules evolved into f...
Raising community awareness to students will teach them the importance of being involved in the community. Students being able to give back to the community will prepare them for their journey to being a positive role model or servant leader.
Set up cycles of school-wide inquiry into learning and teaching performance. Allow for optimal times for group members get together and discuss projects one on one.
Project Citizen is a project that seventh-graders do annually. The students take one problem and find a way to solve it. The goals of Project Citizen are straightforward. There are four steps to Project Citizen. First, the students need to identify a problem in the school or community. Then, they research that problem. The students need to finish about twenty tasks, each related to a category of school safety. Next, they evaluate possible solutions to that problem. The solutions are put into a research paper, which is what this paper is. After that, they develop public policy ideas. These are put into a group presentation and later presented to a larger audience. The four keys to being successful in Project Citizen are to work hard, work as a team, research well, and stay organized.
