Imagine it’s a normal day at school. You are taking notes when suddenly you hear a voice that says somebody with an array of weapons has entered the building. You and your classmates stay hidden in the corner of the room for hours, cowering in fear. You heard that one of your friends was killed in the shooting, and you feel terrible. This may sound impossible right now, but with our minimal security it could happen at any moment.
Project Citizen is an annual project where people in the 7th grade must identify a problem with Edgewood Middle School or the community and come up with a solution for the problem. In past years of Project Citizen, there have been many meaningful changes to Highland Park and Edgewood.Some of these were recycling bins in Edgewood and traffic lights and stop signs where they were needed. Before these ideas were set into place, nobody realized how much they were needed. It is a program that can be very impactful on our community.
One of the problems our school has with school safety are the entry procedures. Currently, the doors are always locked unless there is an event outside such as a field day. In order to get into the school, a person would have to press the buzzer so Mrs. Lindbergh could see them before she admitted them. Chances are if you had a paper bag that looked like a lunch bag, nobody would check it and you could drop it off in the office without anybody knowing what was inside. This could be a tactic for hiding weapons, and should be investigated further because of that.
Because of this technique, I suggest we have a bag check for visitors. This bag check would range from duffel bags to lunch bags.Putting this procedure in place would make sure the person was not bringing anything harmful in...

...ent. Currently, when a student gets a concussion they are sent to the nurse where their memory is checked. If it is severe, then an ambulance is called. Because of the severity of a concussion, I feel there is not enough done to ensure the safety of the person who got the concussion.
One of the ways we could fix this problem is making sure the person has enough time to recover before coming back to school. Once somebody gets a concussion, even a minor hit to the head can do permanent damage.
Whenever somebody gets a hit to the head that looks serious, I suggest they get sent up to the nurse and get asked questions to see if their memory is okay. If they show symptoms of a concussion, an ambulance is called. Also,students would be taught the symptoms of a concussion in their Health class.

Concussions are an injury to the brain caused by bump, or blow to the head or body. They can occur even when you haven’t even been knocked unconscious. Concussions can not be seen, but you can notice when someone has received one. (Center for Disease Control). The symptoms are Headaches, nausea, vomiting, balance problems, blurry vision, and memory problems or confusion. Also difficulty paying attention, bothered by lights or loud noises and feeling sluggish are sure symptoms of a concussion. (CDC 2). Even though concussions can’t be fully prevented, scientists are doing their best to find ways to decrease the amount of concussions that happen per year.
That’s where the advancements in concussion detection and treatment comes into play. According to the article “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment” the writer states “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 207,830 trips to an emergency room annually between 2001 and 2005 due to sports participation injuries” ( “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment | The Sport Journal” ). The report from the CDC shows how many reported sports injuries occur in a short period. However, this does not include the vast number of injuries not reported every year. That is a lot of injuries that go unreported and not cared for. We can help make it to where all kids after a concussion report it and get treated by educating them on the dangers they face if they continue to play as they are and tell them they will be right back to playing after the testing has been completed and they are clear to play again. This is not hard to do it’s just the fact of telling the kids the truth of the matter and them knowing the tests aren’t hard and don’t take long to pass. Sports are second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of traumatic brain injury among people aged 15 to 24 years. (U.S National Library of Medicine). Coaches and parents often do not go through the right procedures or protocols when dealing with a teenager who has received a blow to the head. If a player thinks they might have a concussion they should always tell their coach. A player should also be allowed to set out of the game if they think they might have a concussion.

The majority of concussions happen when one is playing a sport such as football, hockey, or lacrosse. Many famous athletes have had their careers, even their lives cut short due to concussions. Brain damage and death can result from serial concussions (Schafer). When one suffers from a concussion, one’s brain needs time to recover physically and mentally. Between 2002 and 2006, statistics showed that 52,000 people died from concussions and about 275,000 were hospitalized (Fundukian). Everyone’s recovery process is different (“Injury and Pain Care”). Although concussions seem minor, they are very serious brain injuries that may result in severe damage to one’s brain.

The number of children below the age of 19 are treated in American emergency rooms for concussions and other traumatic brain injuries increased from 150,000 in 2001 to 250,000 in 2009. That’s not cumulative, that is actually per year. Everyone should know how and when to treat a concussion, no matter if it is for sports or in general. Concussions can come from anything. Concussions can be an easily preventable injury, however due to poor equipment, a competitive mindset, unrecognizable symptoms, and untrained sports physicians, they are becoming quite common and can lead to potentially fatal brain disorders.
Recreational athletes, competitive athletes, high school athletes, college athletes, and professional athletes all have one thing in common: the risk of a concussion. It's impossible to go a season without one athlete from a team receiving a concussion. The more that these concussions are studied, the more we learn about them, such as their detrimental effects on athletes. Because of the risk of health issues and death that come with concussions, doctors, coaches, athletic trainers, and lawmakers are stepping in to protect athletes of all levels from receiving concussions.
Many people do not understand that a concussion does not simply go away in a few days, it can last up to a couple months. "Most concussions and other mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) should completely resolve within one to six weeks. Some people, however, experience post-concussion syndrome (PCS) with symptoms lasting longer than this. Post-concussion syndrome can include physical, cognitive, and emotional problems” (Cornell). Most brain injuries take one to six weeks to heal. Although, some people suffer from post-concussion syndrome, this is where the symptoms last a bit longer. Even though long-term effects are rather rare they can still occur. In light of recent acts of violence in the nation’s schools, school safety and security have become a hot topic. However, the issue of school safety goes beyond student violence. It includes property damage, theft, and anything else that concerns the overall well being of schools. While it is important to create a safe environment in schools it is also necessary to make sure students feel comfortable in this atmosphere. The security can not be so overbearing that it becomes a negative tactic that gets in the way of the students main objective, learning. Barely noticeable cameras, ID cards, and security guards without uniforms can help generate this safe, but comfortable learning environment. On the other hand metal detectors and mini police forces may be a little too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, or even modern prisons. School security should not be overbearing or obtrusive where it gets in the way of a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning in the nation’s schools.

The very first step to solving the concussion problem is to train coaches how to spot a concussion. The most common symptoms are: headache, sensitivity to light and/or sound, trouble remembering plays, dizziness, nausea, and balance problems. Players suspected of having a concussion must be removed from the game or practice immediately. A concussion is described as a “mild traumatic brain injury” because it is not usually life threatening if treated properly. That name does not indicate the possible consequences if an athlete returns to play too soon.
