Generation after generation has been deteriorating. Millennials were the first generation to achieve all they want without working hard to get what they wanted. Sinek’s main idea argued that are four main reasons why millennials are failing in social skills. I agree with Simon Sinek in the video “Millennials and Internet Addiction” when he discusses that the millennials are a smart generation but the lack of social skills made them to fail at the point that they not even try to achieve or succeed in their work. Sinek says that people are affected by having lower self-esteem and depression. I have noticed that after using Facebook or other social media, I feel depressed because I see people who are not enjoying life. Young people want to become popular and liked by everyone even if their friendships are superficial. As Sinek states “An entire generation now has access to an addictive, numbing chemical called dopamine.” Dopamine makes you feel good, using technology and getting likes in social media and is affecting them by making them addicted. It makes a strong impact on our self- esteem and creates a negative perspective of ourselves. This causes us to feel less than others. We all feel that we need to be approved by others and we start to feel depressed for not being good enough for them. Consequently, there have been people who have committed suicide due to bullying on social media networks. This supports my opinion because unfortunately, our generation depends on technology too much. From personal experiences I have spent all day on the internet and I don’t interact with anyone around me; Instead of communicating with someone in person I decide to text them. Teenagers are spending many hours in front of cell phones or computers which causes them to get addicted. Millennials are rumored to be “self-centered, unmotivated, disrespectful, and disloyal, contributing to widespread concern about how communication with millennials will affect organizations and how they will develop relationships with other organizational members” (Karen Myers 225). According to Sharon DeVaney, the millennial generation “were born between 1980 and 2000” (11) and that “The millennial generation is larger than the 46 million who are in Generation X and the millennials are almost equal in size to the 76.4 million in the baby boomer generation” (12) to this day.
Because of this, Sinek believes that Millennials are unprepared for the harsh reality of real life. They go out into the world and reality hits them hard. Instead of being praised and coddled, they find themselves in challenging work situation and are expected to adjust to a new reality with no consideration of their emotional or psychological needs. This leads to depression and lowered self-esteem because the “real world” isn’t set up for millennials. Another factor adding to the misery of millennials is technology. Sinek compares the way millennials use social media to the way alcoholics drink. Instead of using technology as a tool, he says millennials interact with technology seeking the effect of the “feel good” chemical, dopamine. Sinek (2017) says that “Alcohol is not bad, too much alcohol is bad. Gambling is fun, too much gambling is dangerous. Internet is a big problem in our society today. Many people use internet without knowing it, even I use internet without knowing that I am using too much I consider myself as an addict because I check my Facebook at least 3 times a day and text every time while I eat too. In high school, I used to use my phone in the class because it was allowed in class and teacher didn’t mind but in college I have to tell myself to not use phone in class since it is very important to achieve my goals and get a degree.

All the research that has been done for this specific subject show that people do get addicted to devices, and in a world where technology is only advancing the majority of people have a device they carry all the time, I strongly agree that most cannot go without their phone or at least go an hour without checking for any notifications and that makes them dependent on devise like a drug.
