Cooking with Betty Crocker A myriad of people take pleasure in cooking, while others dread it. Both types will probably at least once in their life cook a meal by following a recipe. The issue is deciding where to keep all of the recipes. Cookbooks solve the problem by keeping an immense number of recipes in one location. Betty Crocker’s sixth edition cookbook is an excellent example of an easy to use cookbook for health conscious people. The cookbook has numerous recipes to make a variety of dishes. To begin with, people browsing any type of book notice its pictures first. This cookbook has colorful pictures of some of the dishes fully prepared. The pictures offer the person cooking an idea of whether he or she wants to make that recipe. They also illustrate what the dish should look like, or closely resemble, when it is complete. But typically, commercial mixes have a great number of unhealthy preservatives, and some doctors declare microwaves to be harmful to the user. Madeleine Thien’s “Simple Recipes” is a story of an immigrant family and their struggles to assimilate to a new culture. The story follows a father and daughter who prepare Malaysian food, with Malaysian customs in their Canadian home. While the father and daughter work at home, the mother and son do otherwise outside the home, assimilating themselves into Canadian culture. The story culminates in a violent beating to the son by his father with a bamboo stick, an Asian tool. The violent episode served as an attempt by the father to beat the culture back into him: “The bamboo drops silently. It rips the skin on my brothers back” (333) Violence plays a key role in the family dynamic and effects each and every character presented in the story

These words are not what would typically be expected from a cookbook yet, nonetheless this is how author Celestine Eustis chooses to start her collection of recipes. In 1836, Celestine Eustis was born in Paris, to her mother who was from a prominent French-speaking Creole family. In 1904, when Eustis was in her late sixties, she wrote Creole in Old Cooking Days (On History and Food). Cooking in Old Creole Days shows the diversity of Creole culture with its variety of recipes and songs as well as other things that are included in this guide to Creole cooking even more so in the author’s introduction, as she utilizes some unconventional methods. This cookbook highlights the diversity and vibrancy of the Creole culture and how it played an important role in the exotic regional culture of Louisiana and in the old south. It served as a reflection of her Creole heritage, New Orleans background, French living, and privileged lifestyle. The recipe book celebrates the cooking traditions and meals created in the kitchens of the wealthy Southern society (On History and Food).
Both poems, “Last Night” by Sharon Olds and “Home-Baked Bread” by Sally Croft implicitly direct a theme of lust. Lust is a very strong sexual desire towards someone. The poets of these two poems demonstrate a common theme within the two by using certain strategies. In the poem “Last Night”, Olds uses figurative language, imagery and repetition to revel lust as a theme. Croft’s poem “Home-Baked Bread” uses figurative language, imagery and diction/word choice to display lust.

She asserts that Winnie is able to escape the hardships of a patriarchal society and reshape her identity as she transitions from her past into her present life through the act of speaking up. Wade refutes this by first introducing Wen Fu’s dominance which acquaints Winnie’s oppressed silence, then by disclosing Winnie gaining a voice through Jimmie, and finally, by displaying what Pearl’s reaction is along with what she identifies her mother as after listening to the narration of her life story.

The definition of homemade has changed drastically throughout time. Rachel Jones recognizes this in her article “Homemade is the New Organic,” published in 2013 by The Atlantic. It is in this article that she explains how media nowadays has raised expectations on home cooking. Jones` purpose is to make readers aware of the unrecognizable and unrealistic expectations that the modern media subtly places on us when it comes to home cooking. Based on the content and the examples presented in the article, it appears as though the author`s intended audience is people who cook, or more specifically, mothers that cook. Jones begins building her credibility with past experiences and reputable sources, uses facts to back up her claims, and appeals to reader`s emotions.

My mom can attest to this as she often resorts to casseroles when the family schedule becomes hectic. At first, the title of the book grabbed my attention. I thought that I am going to read a book in which I can find different baklava recipes coming from the Middle East. Ironically, there was only one recipe that the author called Poetic Baklava. So where are the baklava recipes, I asked myself? If there is only one recipe for baklava what is this book about? However, after reading the book, the answer was revealed to me, and I started to fit everything together. Surprisingly, the title of the book and its content makes sense. The language of Baklava is an enjoyable book to read. One can read it repeatedly for the stories, the memories, the recipes, and obviously for the baklava. In fact, it is a story of the writer's life peppered with recipes that Bud and other family members have shared with her over the years, written in a unique way full with flavors. The book is also packed with Middle Eastern cooking methods and recipes. Though most of the recipes in the book are Middle Eastern, yet it contains some instructions in how to prepare other types of food. For example, in page 86 we can find a recipe from Italy that she called Mrs. Manarelli’s Civilized Panna Cotta. The dishes coming from her American culture are given relaxing names such as Comforting Grilled Velveeta Sandwiches, and The Tenderest Angel Food Cake, while the dishes coming from her Jordan culture are carrying nostalgic names such as Nostalgic Chicken Livers, and "Forget Me Not" Sambusik Cookies. That reflects the multicultural background of the writer, and her search for her identity.
