¨Life itself is the proper binge¨ was a motto and life style that famous chef Julia Child lived by. Going through school, those she´s taught, the cultures she has introduced and explored, and even becoming famous have all been influenced by this saying. Child was, and still is, considered among the greats in modern cooking.
Starting off her college education at Smith College in Massachusetts, Child graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She later went to a school in Paris named Le Cordon Bleu, a prestigious fine arts and culinary institution, with a Le Grande Diplôme and later studied with Max Bugnard, a master chef. Not long after, she opened her own school with her classmates Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle. This school,
which was named L´école des trois Gourmandes and was located in Paris, was where they taught American women to cook. Child left to travel Europe, and finally settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts along with Beck. Finally settling down, they lived together along with Becks´ husband, Jean Fischbacher. Later in life, Child starred in a television series titled The French Chef. This started a revolution, with Child being the first to introduce French cuisine to America. She was known for cooking delicious meals and making good-natured mistakes on camera, blowing off any reprimand saying that “it’s just like we’re alone in the kitchen.” Her easy-going and relatable nature made her a nationwide hit, filling the homes of millions. This enabled her to write multiple books, which include The Way to Cook, Baking With Julia Child, and several more. Even more television series’ were created for her, all the way up until she died, in which Child created scholarships for many prestigious cooking schools all around the world. All in all, Julia Child was a very influential figurehead to both modern day cooking and modern day cooking shows.

Madeleine Thien’s “Simple Recipes” is a story of an immigrant family and their struggles to assimilate to a new culture. The story follows a father and daughter who prepare Malaysian food, with Malaysian customs in their Canadian home. While the father and daughter work at home, the mother and son do otherwise outside the home, assimilating themselves into Canadian culture. The story culminates in a violent beating to the son by his father with a bamboo stick, an Asian tool. The violent episode served as an attempt by the father to beat the culture back into him: “The bamboo drops silently. It rips the skin on my brothers back” (333) Violence plays a key role in the family dynamic and effects each and every character presented in the story
To get where she is so far, Candace attended Kent State University where she went through athletic training. Just recently after she finished her major and became certified, she finished up with a masters degree and had a second major of teaching, which gave her the chance to teach while she is at Hoban.
Sandra Steingraber wrote the essay titled, “My Children: The Food Experiment” about her experience as a mother of two children who have never been exposed to any type of advertisements or propaganda regarding commercialized food products. Steingraber and her family moved to a cabin in the woods near Ithaca, New York and when the family arrived at their new home the discovered their television had been stolen. They decided not to replace the television, which did not seem like a conscious decision to not expose their children to advertisement as much as it related to it not being a central part of their current life or lack of finances to replace it. Not replacing the television provided a context clue that this experiment was not planned,

Bittman also develops pathos in this article because he grabs a widely held matter that to many individuals is elaborate with: "...giving them the gift of appreciating the pleasures of nourishing one another and enjoying that nourishment together.” (Mark Bittman) Bittman gives the reader the actions to think about the last time they had a family dinner and further imposes how these family dinners are altogether important for family time. Therefore, Bittman did a magnificent job in pointing into the morals of his targeted audience and developing a critical point of view about fast food to his intended audience leaving them with a thought on less fast food and more home prepared meals.
In conclusion, Julia Child’s experiences display all that can be done when people do not give up. Although she was often excluded in her cooking classes, she did not quit. Creating a French cookbook for Americans was not an easy task either, but she did not back down. Trying to publish her cookbook and having to deny requests from their original publisher was definitely painful. But, her thick skin, endurance, and principle all payed off when the first edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking finally hit the shelves.

He felt like life was worth living even though once in a while a hard choice would come along to toughen his life. Making a choice is very hard, but when making a choice it should be one that you will not regret later in life. Making choices is one of the hardest things in life so you must see all the good and all the bad to the outcome of your options. Live everyday like it is your last. Ebert says that life is a very precious thing. Hamlet wants to die, but him not knowing what is on the other side scares so he decides to live. Even though Ebert had to get surgery, he got through it and learned to still live his life with no regrets.

Kate O’Brien’s Land of Spices is a good read especially if the bookworm is from a catholic school upbringing. The story’s contents complete with the antics of the girls and the lack of patience in the sisters is recognizable from memories drawn on similar events. The nuns’ softer emotions were hidden away from the students and only their hard-heartedness evident in the school’s classrooms. In sixth grade during the fall of 1963 after President Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas, a Dominican sister was seen at school with tears in her eyes. At this moment the realization descended upon the enrolled that there was flesh and blood under that habit and not an alien being. O’Brien addresses Catholicism, homosexuality and love in her novel with creativity and realism for the times. On a negative note, the liberal use of the French language is a reminder that this book was written with the rich and cultured person in mind and becomes aggravating to this unenlightened one.
