Is earning your own money bad? The article The Fast Food Factories: McJobs are bad for kids was written by Amitai Etzioni and published by The Washington Post in 1986. In this article Etzioni states, and I quote, “theses jobs undermine school attendance and involvement, impact few skills that will be useful in later life, and simultaneously skew the values of teen-agers—especially their idea about the worth of a dollar.” Because I am currently in high school and have a job, I strongly believe jobs are helpful, contain many basic life learning skills, but often diminishes teen-agers` thoughts of the value of money.
In this article, Etzioni comments strongly on how jobs effects kids school attendance and school involvements. She says students
work 5 to 7 days a week, work long hours (more than 30 hours a week), and because restaurants closes late and all the after work you have to do extends their hours of work. However Thanks to the Child Labor Act, teenagers can only obtain 14 hours of labor during school days and their shift must end before 10:00 p.m. This allows for teenagers to get enough rest to wake up the next morning fully ready for school.

Etzioni explains that working jobs doesn’t teach teens good money habits. First of all, I don’t believe it is McDonald’s job to teach kids how to use their money. One of the biggest advantages to having money at that age is that they can completely mess up and it won’t affect them in a dangerous way. Having money to spend can teach kids to spend their money wisely. The first several times they see something they want they will buy and find out later when it goes on sale that they messed up. Also teens try to borrow money all the time to get what they want quick. Often times they will end up in debt, but lucky for them they’re young enough that their parents can bail them out. All tangible objects have a monetary value. One way to acquire one of these tangible objects is to purchase it. In order to purchase it, you must have funds, and in order to have funds you must have some means of income, most commonly a job. Jobs are hard work, some more than others, and teach one how to have a good work ethic. Having a job and working to make your own money is great, it makes you independent and self sufficient. Earning my own money helps me realize how rewarding hard work is, but it also makes me much more wary about spending it. Most kids that have graduated high school have never been educated on the subject of personal finance, so they don’t know things like how to pay bills, or even how to do something as simple as applying for a job. According to a family friend of mine, Ron Hart; who happens to also be an award-wining author and TV/radio commentator, believes that students in high school don’t learn anything about how to get a job or get prepared financially. He states that, “ Students should prepare for a job. Maybe, instead of taking a fifth field trip to the Trail of Tears site, do one to learn about real jobs in an area they might want.” Hart believes that most basic high schools aren’t teaching students how to become financially stable for their future, which can cause major issues. He claims that “few schools teach about the value of hard work, ingenuity, gumption and entrepreneurship. Those lessons are as rare as Donald Trump bumper stickers in the faculty parking lot.” Hart also goes on to talk about how high school does not prepare you for life the same way college will. There are so many more lessons to learn there that people are missing out on. College is very important due to the fact that it will teach students more skills about finance and job seeking that most high schools don’t. In college, kids will learn how to save and budget their money, pay for their own expenses, and prioritize their needs verses their wants. Learning financial responsibility is also something that kids will carry with them throughout their jobs and their life. Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.

Almost everyone, especially middle-class families, face financial struggles during their lifetimes. It mainly starts when the children grow older and most likely, will want to attend college. As soon as they are able to, students want to find a job, such as a fast-food job, to possibly take a load off of their parents or jump-start their independence. Amitai Etzioni, a very well-known educator amongst prestigious schools who has a Ph.D in Sociology from University of California, Berkeley, touches upon this subject. All throughout his essay, Etzioni uses multiple tactics to justify this opinion that teenagers working in fast-food chains affects their academics. In the essay titled, “Working at Mcdonald’s”, Etzioni claims that teenagers tend to focus on instant gratification from money instead of what could be beneficial in the long run along with the interference of fast-food jobs, that could be detrimental to their educational and work careers.
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
