Class and Education
Social class is a group in society having the same economic status as one another. Class could
be determined from how well is the job you have paying you or even your social status in
society but how do social class affect educational opportunities in the U.S? Social class affects
education because upper class students have more benefits that better prepare them for college
than lower class students. The upper class schools have a better teaching system that liberates
education by the students learning how to look beyond instructions and the students are free to
learn whatever way is helpful. However in the working class schools students don’t have the
option of learning in their own way

parents For example; in the article “From Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” by
Jean Anyon it was said that “The first two schools I will call working class schools. Most of the
parents have blue-collar jobs. Less than a third of the fathers are skilled, while the majority are in
unskilled or semiskilled jobs” (2). This shows that working class schools are created for working
class children and these schools are made to keep children in line instead of teaching them. An
example of this would be another quote from the article that gave an example of students having
to take orders. One of the teachers said "Take your ruler. Put it across the top. Make a mark at
every number. Then move your ruler down to the bottom. No, put it across the bottom. Now
make a mark on top of every number. Now draw a line from... At this point a girl said that she
had a faster way to do it and the teacher said, No, you don't; you don't even know what I'm
making yet. Do it this way or it's wrong” (4). This shows that in these schools there are rules
Without an education Americans are unable to fully prosper and compete with the competitive career pathways, which is the same for any country. In order to grow and expand an individual needs the education and knowledge of the area of expertise they wish to achieve. However, in poorer countries the availability and opportunities to fulfill an education is far slimmer than in the United States. In fact such low education levels have contributed to the issue of child labor, an increasing epidemic in Honduras. Due to “rapid population growth and limited school budgets […] the school day in Honduras has been cut to half a day” (Groves 172). This downsizing has left children with the ability to work for the rest of the day. However once they begin work most tend to quit school believing that it is not worth investing in their education, since working alone provides them with the necessary valuable skills (Groves 172). This perception has led to “between 69 and 75 percent of children working in construction, agriculture, and the service sector” no longer attending school (Groves 172). Dana Goldstein a journalist from The Nation says that, “47 million American jobs are expected to be created between now and 2018, and about two-thirds will require some sort of education beyond high school.” In making this comment, Goldstein is showing us that the only way to be prosperous in the future is to educate our children. Goldstein goes on to say that, “27 percent of workers with occupational licenses earn more than the average recipient of a bachelor’s degree.” In other words, Goldstein is trying to tell us that a bachelor 's degree isn 't the only way to go and that we need to increase funding for vocational schools and community
Rodney K. Smith’s mere opinion of his publication is that children with a higher level are more like to secure a job rather than those with no or little education. His view is upheld by the statistics of bureau that gives a clear statistics of the percentage of the salary earned by students with higher education and that of lower education. This makes his claim more reliable and credible because the bureau of labor and statistics is a reputable institution in the United States that deals with the percentage of people who work in United State. Smith’s own personal anecdote appeals to the feelings of the audience in which it ignites them with feelings of possibility.
Class for the purpose of this paper is the concept that those who are better off are of what can be considered to be upper class and those that lack financial means are of the lower class. Mantsios says that there is an absence of discussion in reference to the distinctions of classes (697). In a study performed by Susan Ostrander, in regards to the term “upper class” one woman responded “‘I hate to use the word ‘class.’ We are responsible, fortunate people, old families, the people who have something’” (697). Yet it appears to be opposite that those who are in this lower class realize the plight they suffer. As one student from Fremont High School noted, “‘The owners of the sewing factories need laborers. Correct…It’s not going be their own kids… You’re ghetto,’ said Fortino unrelentingly to her. ‘So Sew!’”(Kozol 645). The student who knew that he was more than likely to be stuff in his place was willing to point out this fault of the system. This topic which more than likely the well-off woman would stray from rather because she had life easier than Fortino will in his lifetime.

In contemporary American society, social class is based on the amount of money and property you have and also prestige. Prestige is given to a person through the line of work or the family that they come from. For example, upper-upper class member Jennifer Lopez reeks of prestige not only because she has millions of dollars in her bank account, but she has very expensive luxuries, cars, and houses.
When it cost more money to hire low-skill workers, businesses suffer. For example, fast-food chains rely mainly on low-skill workers. This would force restaurants, like McDonalds, to pay someone $10 an hour just to flip burgers. The class system places the individual in the social system based on his achieved status. This status is earned or chosen. This includes educational level, careers, and spouses.
What is social class? It is a term used to describe a large group of people who share similar social or economic positions in society based on wealth, income, job status, education, skills or power in the political sphere. Class is not just about what you own or earn but also who you know. Class affects not only how we feel about ourselves, but how others judge and consequently treat us. Those at the top of the class structure, the elite, have more power than those in the middle and even more power than those at the bottom who are of lower class.
