Personal Leadership Development Plan
Leadership is the key element for engineers to become successful in their professional life. Having high technical skills and creative ideas is not enough to success in engineering profession because it is difficult to convert the skills and ideas into deeds without working with talented people. Leadership traits enable the engineer to mobilize the people to achieve challenging goals. To have the power to influence the people, engineers should create plan to develop their leadership skills. The first test is 16 Personalities which give the result based on the main traits that form the personality type. Based on the result, I am considered as a “The Commander” (ENTJ-A) and my role is the analyst. ENTJ-A is the abbreviation of the main traits that form my personality which are extraversion, intuition, thinking, judgment and assertiveness. The main strengths of this type of personality are self-confidence, strategic thinking, charismatic and inspiring while the main weakness are the stubbornness, poor handling of emotions and ruthlessness. After conducting the second test, the result shows the same strengths but different weakness. The strengths are the faith, Leadership, determination, problem Solving and risk taking while the weakness is the teamwork. This test gives me %64 of integrity. The third test give the high five strengths by considering me as deliverer, strategist, analyst, focus expert and commander. The Keirsey assessment tools indicate that I am considered as a Guardian who is serious and quite in their workplace while a fun person outside. Also, Guardians respect customs, traditions and laws to bring the stability in the modern life. Lastly, the VIA character test shows that the hope is main strengths of my character besides other traits such as the ability to provide wise council to others, fairness, social intelligence and curiosity. In my opinion, I agree with most of the results expect the the level of integrity in the second test because it is difficult to measure the integrity through answering the questions only. In my opinion, the reputation and the strength of the relationship between the leader and follower can reflect the level of integrity and
The word leadership can mean many things if you were to ask individual people to define it. Some may say, “Oh that’s the person in charge”, others may argue that leadership is a “position of power”. I define leadership as the person that others look to in times of crisis and need that they aspire to follow. A leader is always looking for meaningful ways to take care of those around them, sometimes with discipline and others with a calm voice of reason. Throughout my career I have had many different levels of leadership from junior people that would lend a helping hand to senior leaders that always had my back and the answers to tough questions. The most influential person in my career was a First Class Petty Officer when I was fresh out of school and new to the ship. I had never been to sea and was excited to learn. The next three years were some of the best years of my career. Each day we would do nearly everything together when it came to our equipment, we would troubleshoot complex equipment problems sometimes late
There is a lot that I want to accomplish from my leadership practice, but initially I prefer to be very careful on implementing those. Each person has their own objectives to accomplish as a leader-scholar-practitioner. Similarly, I too have plans to implement. My plans that I want to accomplish as a leader-scholar-practitioner are as follows:
Everything in leadership will be determined by the competency of the leader. John C Maxwell is credited with saying “everything rises and falls on leadership. The leaders are often the ones making the decisions influencing success or failure. When I think of competency, I believe it is important to acknowledge the difference between competency and confidence. Confidence is the belief that I can lead; competence requires results of successful leadership. Confidence is the place people get the idea a person is a “good guy.” Being a good guy or even being confident is not a qualification of competency; it merely means one has the right to have dinner. Being a good guy allows
I define Leadership as a person’s ability to guide or shepherd a herd through/to a common destination – a destination of common beliefs. The leader possesses qualities/traits that can persuade others to follow them because they believe and trust them – regardless of their “human” traits and imperfections. The herd trusts that they will stay on course to the common destination.
Introduction Through identification and ongoing assessment of her leadership style and ability, this leader is able to develop and understand her own strengths and limitations in order to grow and develop into a more effective leader. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of servant leadership, contingency, and path-goal styles of leadership to gain an understanding of current leadership models, identify this author’s style of leadership, and explore why leadership is important to organizations, society, and this author. A Personal Model of Leadership Servant leadership was a term that was first used by Keifner Greenleaf (1970) in his first essay, The Servant as Leader (as cited by Crippen, C., 2005). Greenleaf based his essay on his belief that a servant leader is a servant first, and explained that it would begin with the natural urge to serve and then the leader would make a conscious choice to become a leader, in doing so he makes the choice to ensure that others needs are met first (2005 ). As a servant leader develops he should always keep aware of those who he serves and strive to ensure that they are becoming healthier, wiser, freer, have an increase in autonomy, and become more like servants themselves (2005).
Upon taking the Myers Briggs personality test on the human metrics website I was not surprised that I received the conclusion of an ENTJ or “the natural born leader”. The role of an ENTJ is that you conduct yourself in a manner that is very logical and rational (“Personality”). The Myers Briggs Type Indicator test has been around for over 65 years and has continually evolved to become more accurate in identifying personality traits. I find that the ENTJ type of personality reflections are accurate due to the fact that I am a no nonsense type of leader that likes to take charge and get the job done. In order to become a better leader for your organization you can take the time to educate yourself on the other 15 types of personality traits. This will help a leader in better understanding the views of their coworkers and will give them the tools of deal...
The general personality traits, which are related to success both in and outside the workplace, are all inherent in my answers given in the Leadership Assessment Quiz. With statements such as, “it is easy for me to compliment others” and “team members listen to me when I speak,” it is apparent I possess these characteristics. Whereas my task- related personality traits associated with successful leadership, such as courage, still need to be developed. Not only do I know this in myself, but it is clearly pointed out throughout the test, with statements such as, “resolving conflict is an activity I enjoy” and “I would enjoy coaching other members of the team”.
My research provided an opportunity to review and identify different elements of leading from previous studies. As I begin my review, I find myself rediscovering essential qualities of successful leadership. The author provides a very interesting case study that depicts the importance of people skills, (Bennis, 2009). In order to be an effective leader you must be able to relate to others through open communication, (Bennis, 2009). A leader needs to be approachable and personable in their actions. The case study provided an example of a leader that lacked people skills. He had been mentored in an environment that was not conducive to team building, (Bennis, 2009). His leadership approach was to be direct and demanding centered on productivity
My biggest personal leadership failure occurred earlier this year when I worked at Einstein Bros Bagels at Coffman Union. I stayed there from January until April making and serving bagels to customers. However, I had the morning shift, the busiest period of the day. Long lines would form every time I was there, and sometimes I couldn’t catch up. One day in April, my co-worker, a veteran making bagels, was absent, and someone who didn’t have as much experience replaced her. What followed was a mess. My team chemistry with the replacement was dreadful, and a ton of people had to wait a while for their orders. My manager saw the incident, and after my shift was over, he gave me the option of leaving my job. I accepted, but my self-confidence was in a state that was beyond repair. It was one of the first times that I felt I let others down with my work performance. I learned that I shouldn’t expect to be great at everything and that I should analyze my weaknesses before taking on something challenging.
Leaders will no matter what have an influence on our world. They have missions, dreams and ambition, and with these things they are bound to go far. For leaders, what makes these dreams come true is having strong qualities such as leadership practices, values and strengths. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
The personal leadership development plan is to capture the self-awareness of an individual. People in general have a difficult time trying to figure out who they are and how they view themselves plus how others may see them. This plan will touch on my personal strengths, areas of improvement, and also identify me as a person more in-depth. The Personal Profile System and the Team Dimensions Profile will be used to provide an understanding.
2. I will learn more about state geography. I will learn more about the towns and regions of Oklahoma.
Is a leader as defined in the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, merely one who leads - synonymous with a boss? Or something more? I believe that a leader is much more than that and can be defined in any number of ways. In attempting to define a leader personally, I will use both myself and others as examples.
Some people were born to be great leaders and some were born to be great learners. I ask myself this question, “How was I created?” Was I born a leader or was I molded to lead. As I explain my philosophy on how I want to lead, I will first dive into my past to recognize and pin point my creator. October 27th 2004 I raise my right hand in order to serve and protect the United State against all enemies, foreign and domestic. At this moment in my young personal leadership journey, I get my first glimpse of a leadership style, “shut up and listen.”
According to the study of this course, I have learned many useful management skills and I feel like these skills will be applied to my future career development. When working on the self- assessment tests, I found myself fall into the category of the ISTJ personality types, which as illustrated by Myers Briggs, is the type of personality that is conscientious, considerate, and helpful. Personality traits such as honest, dutiful, practical and responsible are my strengths; personality traits such as stubborn, insensitive and poor communication skill are my weaknesses. Related to the knowledge I have learned in the course I believe both strengths and weakness will have influence to my future career development. In this reflection paper, I will demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses that may place the most influence on my way of success.
