Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag seemed allegretto and was very catchy. I easily pictured scenes from old time-y silent movies as I listened, like one of those fast-paced walking down the street scenes. I also saw the flicker of the screen when those movies would flash to a card with the dialogue that just happened written on it. The upbeat rhythm makes it seem like it would have been a popular song to dance to at the time. The song is in duple meter and the syncopation helps to give it that fun and different quality.
The “Northwoods Journal”, is about Jim Brandenburg’s quest that takes place in Ely, Minnesota. Brandenburg wanted to challenge himself by taking one photo every day for 90 days. He will not have a second chance to change his F/stop or shutter speed to get the photograph correct. In the “Northwoods Journal”, he has many strong paragraphs, but the one that stood out to me was paragraph three. Brandenburg uses three writing strategies, descriptive words, sentence variety, and prepositions, to create a strong paragraph and engage an audience.
...gers of the old folk music are referred to as “authentic”. The author uses the biographies and the personal experiences of true Appalachian folk musicians to portray what life in the Appalachians was like. The strong family values, the music, the legends.
The meaning of Louis Armstrong’s song title can have two different interpretation: literally and figuratively. The literal meaning of his title “Black and Blue” illustrates Louis’ outer appearance and emotion which he highlights upon in his lyrics. On the other hand, the figurative aspect of the title’s meaning could be understood as a message or his personal testimony to society, which Louis ponders upon his implication of his skin tone.

In Langston Hughes’ poem, the author gives us vivid examples of how dreams get lost in the weariness of everyday life. The author uses words like dry, fester, rot, and stink, to give us a picture of how something that was originally intended for good, could end up in defeat. Throughout the play, I was able to feel how each character seemed to have their dreams that fell apart as the story went on. I believe the central theme of the play has everything to do with the pain each character goes thru after losing control of the plans they had in mind. I will attempt to break down each character’s dream and how they each fell apart as the play went on.
Johnny Cash is easily one of the most recognizable figures, not only in country music, but also in American culture. His story has been recounted in numerous books and movies, and his life and legacy have continued to live on long after his death. Cash remains a pervasive figure in the history of music.

The book Ragtime begins in the year 1902, which was during the Progressive Era. That being said, it is clear that the novel has major ties with political reform. Some major political philosophies discussed in the book were conservative, radical, and liberal. Each character in the book have their own belief or view on politics. Ragtime’s characters are made up of both fictional and non-fiction people. Throughout this novel, some characters evolve and adjust easily to the change in times, opposed to other who find it hard to accept the new reality. Isolationism vs Interventionism seems to play a role as one of the main causes of political confusion happening in the book. The book is told from an anonymous and omniscient point of view; therefore,
Based on the novel of the same name by E.L. Doctorow, Ahrens and Flaherty’s Ragtime is a compelling epic capturing the American experience at the turn of the 20th century. Tracking three diverse families in pursuit of the American dream in the volatile “melting pot” of turn-of-the-century New York, Ragtime confronts the dialectic contradictions inherent in American reality: experiences of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair. Over the course of the show, the worlds of a wealthy white couple, a Jewish immigrant father, and his motherless daughter, and an African American ragtime musician intertwine. Together, they discover the surprising interconnections of the human heart, the limitations of justice and the unsettling
While debating what to choose for the group music genre, it was quickly realized the whole group liked country music. It seems only fitting the class should choose such a genre, as it is popular here in Texas and country music is a big part of the culture of everyday life. The sub genres in this essay are Bluegrass, Nashville or “pop” Country, Texas Country, Outlaw, and Alternative Country. When discussing the favorite songs and artists of the group, it was realized that even though some may like different subgenres of country, such as bluegrass or outlaw, they all have the same special country sound that everyone knows, connects to, and loves.
In the song “Blue Skies”, written by Irving Berlin, you are able to get a feel for what life was like in the 1920s. The song gave good vibes and made everything seem perfect and great because in the 1920s, life was good. In one of the verses, when he wrote about how everyday was a cloudy day he was referencing to the recently fought World War I. “Blue Skies” was written in order to display the joy and happiness that was circulating the nation during the 1920s right after the first World War. The meaning behind the title “Blue Skies” is that the skies always seemed bluer because everything in the country was going great during the 1920s. Also, the song “Blue Skies” was written with the intent to have an
Though the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Literature is typically fraught with some degree of contention, the Swedish Academy’s decision to present legendary musician Bob Dylan with the award stands as one of its most controversial selections. This disputable choice has roused a myriad of criticisms ranging from citations of Dylan’s pre-existing fame to debates about his merits as a literary figure. The former argument is best explained by one critic who plainly stated, “Dylan is simply too famous”(Schonfeld). Indeed, before being awarded the Nobel Prize, Dylan had already achieved an almost incomprehensible level of international notoriety, and had garnered an impressive collection of accolades. To be put plainly, “Bob Dylan [did] not
An individual does not make a community, and a community does not make a society. In order to have a functioning and prosperous society, one must relinquish some free will in return for protection. According to John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, there are certain rights of the individual which the government may never possess. Centuries after the publication of Mill’s Essay, the court case Gonzales v. O Centro Espirita Beneficente Uniao do Vegeta l , 546 U.S. 418 (2006) challenged the protective role of government against the free exercise of religion. In this instance, Mill would agree with the court ruling because, like his views concerning free exercise of will, government restriction and majority rule, both the court ruling and Mill’s ideals are concerned for the best interests of the individual rather than for the greater good of society.
“Hi “ said my mother to the neighbor while we were on our way to football practice. Swoosh went the trees in the wind. The conversation seemed like forever and time was ticking away. With no need to rush, my brother and I decided to step away and play with the rocks. Crack went the rocks as we threw them in the distance.
