In her article “Shitty First Drafts,” Anne Lamott creates an argument attempting to prove to her readers that every good writer begins with a “shitty” first draft. This is a very bold claim to make about writers, and obviously should have some solid evidence to back it up. However, contrary to what one might think, Lamott has little to no “real” evidence to support her statements. Instead, she uses humor and sarcasm to cover the fact that she has no real support for her views. By doing this, Lamott lacks much of the credibility (usually) needed in a rhetorical argument, and her humorous tone does not suffice for a convincing argument. Even though Lamott incorporates a great deal of sarcasm and absurdity in her work, she lacks the most important …show more content…
Pathos is the appeal to an audience’s emotion. Aside from the other two appeals that I have outlined in this essay, pathos is by far the most recognizable appeal in Lamott’s article. The humorous tone of the article is very easily recognized and frankly, it is hard not to laugh at some of Lamott’s uncalled-for sarcastic remarks (whether it be in your head or out loud). For example, when writing about how every writer she knows never writes an elegant first draft, she continues, “All right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much. We do not think that she has a rich inner life or that God likes her or can even stand her” (1). By making such presumptuous claims about this person, some audiences might find this type of language comical or entertaining, which in turn makes them want to believe Lamott and continue reading. In a way this helps Lamott seem credible to some readers, in which case she has created a successful argument. On the other hand, some readers might find this kind of language unprofessional and inappropriate. Because much of the article deals with language that is full of humor and sarcasm, it would make sense to say that Lamott has directed this article towards an audience who is looking for something more entertaining than a typical statistic-filled essay that one might consider mainstream in this field. Whether it be entertaining or absurd, Lamott most definitely uses the appeal of pathos in her
For instance, they claim that MagnaSoles are “popular among consumers” (52-53). This use of luring pathos is creating a situation where the reader recognizes themselves as a consumer and that they should be conforming to also like the product. This is exactly what the speaker wants the reader to feel. This need to conform is a clear highlight to The Onion’s purpose of exposing how easy it is for advertisers to make a consumer buy in to the product. Additionally, the speaker puts the reader in a vulnerable position when a user of the product says to “try to prove that Magnasoles didn’t heal me!” (61-62). This is used to make the reader feel like this user of the product. The user thinks the product is great and he even goes as far to challenge the reader to find problems with his claims. If he is challenging the reader than more often than not the reader will just accept what is said and believe it. Once again The Onion mocks how consumers often feel when addressing a product’s claims. The seductive pathos allows for proof that consumers believe anything when they are tested to conform and believe
An article that uses a lot of rhetorical devices is Shitty First Drafts by Anne Lamott. The speaker of this article is obviously Anne Lamott; the reader gets to understand her more after she shares some personal experiences. Lamott wants people to know that their first drafts are supposed to be shitty. This article is meant for college students who just finished their first draft and is looking for improvement. The purpose of this whole article is to inform you that your first draft is supposed to be horrible because no one can just pull an amazing paper from no where, not even the people who write for a living. The whole subject is telling you that your first drafts are going to be bad, so make sure to write multiple drafts before you
Bryan Stevenson wrote a book called Just Mercy, which is about the failures in the criminal justice system. He tells the stories of victims of horrible injustices. He uses pathos as a narrative technique in order to persuade readers to feel empathetic towards the people about whom he wrote in his book. Stevenson uses pathos to have the reader feel a variety of emotions, specifically sympathy, anger, and hope because he knows that those emotions have more influence on the readers.
Pathos is a quality of an experience in life or a work of art that stirs up emotions of pity, sympathy, and sorrow. She uses this to connect to the people by bringing up her personal experiences in life. As shown in the speech, “My friends, we’ve come to Philadelphia- the birthplace of our nation- because what happened in this city 240 years ago still has something to teach us today” (Line 35-36).. Hillary says “my friends” as referring to the American people, she considers everyone as important and this causes people to feel good about themselves. Also, she uses allusion to show how the past still impacts our world today. Another device uses is point of view, “Teachers who change lives. Entrepreneurs who see possibilities in every problem. Mothers who lost children to violence and are building a movement to keep other kids safe” (Lines 104-106). The point of view is used in third person, and emphasizes her point that she is trying to make. This quotes is also pathos, she is connecting to real people and what they go through in everyday life. Pathos is one appeal that touches the heart of general people.
This article “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott help me understand that every good writer struggle to write their first draft and it might not be perfect at first but with a lot of dedication and effort everything could be done as expected. know that even the best published book started out with “Shitty First Drafts” help me to not be too critical to my first draft and having a little bit more confidences about my writing. I would apply this lesson whenever I have a writing assignment and I am get frustrated on how to start my essay, I would remember that all writers went through this stage of anxiety and not comfortable about their first draft. I would definitely recommend this article to a student that is starting their first composition
Parker attempts to use pathos in order to appeal to her audience's emotion. For example, she appeals to her audiences’ weaknesses by saying that women who have undergone an abortion feel shame, yet how can someone determine that another feels shameful because they realize that abortion is wrong. You could easily argue that they were in a state of depression because they miss their baby; that does not make them shameful.
Pathos is emotional appeal that influences what we think. According to everything’s an argument there are four main ways that Pathos is used. They are using emotions to build bridges, using emotions to sustain an argument, using humor, and using argument based on emotion. To build a bridge, the speaker makes the audience feel empathy for the situation. The speaker appeals to her or his own experience to gain sympathy early that way the audience will be more inclined to listen later. When utilizing emotion to strengthen an argument, it makes the claim stronger, because it can energize the situation. Humor can be a great tactic to lighten the mood, but a jokester must be careful because the joke may be thought of as ridicule. Arguments based on emotion are to strike a particular emotion, so that the audience will feel more
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
... audience, it made it more complex to have pathos effect all the audiences. To sum up, the author use of pathos did get the audience to be interested in the topic by giving them a solution to help yet, most would not like the topic of depressed doctor in need of aid.
...echniques employed are persuasive and subtle, and this allows Carr to take advantage of all emotional arguments at his disposal. In conjunction with sources pertinent to the topic, Carr’s emotional appeals seem to get his audience thinking, and from the article it is easy to agree with the points he has made. Carr’s use of logos and pathos does bring into question his ethos, however. Fortunately, Carr’s ethos should not be questioned, as he has written several books and articles on the topic. This does not excuse his bias, but it does permit him to speak on the topic at hand. Carr definitely presents himself as a strong literary figure, and his views on the internet are reasonable as well as relatable. This combination of ethos, pathos, and logos successfully allows Carr to write as an expert in this field, and his article and thoughts are not to be taken lightly.
To define, pathos is the Greek word for suffering and experience. This appeal is used to persuade an audience through emotion. For example, the writer evokes emotion by briefly explaining her own personal experience with the Lou Gehrig’s disease. Gutterman stated, “Don't get me wrong: I think raising money for ALS research is a great idea. My dad died of ALS when I was 16.” In addition, the writer went into detail with her story, further captivating readers emotion. “ My dad might still be alive if people 10 or 20 years ago had given ALS the attention it's getting now,” was another statement that implied how she felt on the
Pathos is a writing technique that she uses in many ways, many of which are encompassed in her other rhetorical devices.
Pathos being the Greek word for “experience” is often called the emotional appeal because it persuades a person through their emotions and feelings. In my opinion, Pathos is the most important appeal because it causes the audience to identify as well as respond emotionally to the writer’s point of view, i.e., to feel what the writer feels. Apart from the emotional side, pathos has an imaginative side to an article or text as well. For example, President Obama’s speech on the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, Pathos is seen when he describes that day by saying ”The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up
Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Examples of pathos can be sadness, anger, strength, and pain. I think CNN uses these types of emotions by using different colors for descriptions using context headlines and articles. It makes you angry looking at the way politics are paying to the government which is penalizing the communities . They use blue and red words. They use red if it is really important and they also use red for anger and blue to grab the reader's attention. An example of sadness comes from the amount of deaths tallying up over the United States and the year has just begun. It also is invoking the pain factor on our hearts for the families of the events that are going on globally. Strength can also be an emotion that can play on thus seen thru the different tab links like health. They use the color green to represent health because it makes you think of the environment. They use the color blue for money because money can be used for business, markets, and global. They show the color red if it is very important. They also use the color red when something is
Pathos means to persuade an audience by appealing to their emotions. For instance, “If America meets it correctly, then, despite hosts of dangers and difficulties, we can look forward and move forward to a future worthy of men, with peace in our hearts. If we dodge the issue, we shall flounder for ten or 20 or 30 bitter years in a chartless and meaningless series of disasters.” This pathos makes the readers feel nervous, and they want to figure out whether America can avoid waste the best period. Therefore, the readers will focus on how they can solve the problem, and they cannot wait to read the following words. Another instance is that the paragraph “If there's one place we Americans did not want to be, it was in the war. We didn't want much to be in any kind of war but, if there was one kind of war we most of all didn't want to be in, it was a European war. Yet, we're in a war, as vicious and bad a war as ever struck this planet, and, along with being worldwide, a European war.” The author stand with the reader: they do not want to be involved in the war, and they want to escape from it. Then he said that “We say we don't want to be in the war. We also say we want England to win. We want Hitler stopped - more than we want to stay out of the war. So, at the moment, we're in.”, which shows the consideration of getting out of the war, and it makes the readers acknowledge that the America was
