The website my group choose to do our rhetorical analysis on is CNN. CNN stands for Cable News Network. CNN was founded by Ted Turner and 25 other members in 1980. CNN originally was a tv channel. CNN lasted from 1980-2003 on tv. The tv channel CNN became the first channel to provide 24-hour television news coverage, and was the first all-news television network in the United States. The original programs for the tv show CNN was Moneyline, Evans & Novak, Crossfire, and Larry King Live. The variety shows were Sports Tonight, People in the News, Style with Elsa Klensch, Business Morning, and CNN Daybreak. In 9995 CNN was made into a website. The website attracted interest and now is one of the most popular news websites in the world. The growth …show more content…
of blogs, social media and user-generated content have influenced the site. The website CNN helped us find the observations “(what)”, examples “(how)”, analysis “(why)” to rhetorical concepts. We figured out how to use the concepts and how not to use the concepts. The rhetorical concepts are audience, purpose, Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. By observing the website CNN, the audience or group of spectators using cable news network is intended for politicians and students. The reason the audience is mainly politicians and students is because of the titles such as “Today in politics” which are for politicians. The titles such as “Top stories” help to inform students to create research papers. The reason why it is for politicians is because politicians enjoy being updated on politics which CNN provides for them. The reason it is for students is because of the topics under the “Top stories” category which can provide information that students need for research analysis. They have brief descriptions under the headers to enlighten or grab the reader's attention. The tap entertainment can sometimes make people think or it can help them have fun with the articles under entertainment. The titles of the articles can grab your attention. The purpose of CNN is to inform people what is going on. The website CNN helps inform people with the top bullet points such as sports, politics, and world affairs. The sports tab helps inform people what is going on with sports. For example, it would show what happened in a game, or like if there is a type of trade in baseball, or a trade in basketball. It shows things under the sports tab like other kinds of sports. For example, the sports baseball, basketball, football, soccer and other sports. The reason why CNN helps to inform people is because it keeps observers up to date on specific topics and information located inside the bullet points. The website showed ethos. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. A person should be able to use this website for a source and be sure it is credible. The website CNN is effective because the authors and sources are credible. The website is up to date and factually correct. An example of ethos on the website CNN is that it includes live tv and live updates. Another example is that it has dates and times since the scenario occurred. CNN also shows pictures and videos that correspond with the events. The pictures and videos shown lead observers to believe that they trust that the information and sources are factual. The live tv and live updates indicate that the information is consistently up to date. The show Style with Elsa Klensch goes under ethos because it talks about fashion and design. The tab travel can go in the categories ethos and logos. Travel can go under ethos because of all the views when you are traveling. The website CNN also showed logos.
Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason. The layout is organized in chronological order. It is easy to find things by clicking on the different tabs at the top of the page. The titles and headlines displayed makes navigation easy. Some examples of logos are that it starts from top of website with live TV down to today’s top stories. Another example of logos is that article titles are attention grabbers such as “Ex-team USA doctor awaits sentence”. The attention grabbing headlines allows the observers to navigate to specific information easily. It's very beneficial to have live TV listed at the top along with the top stories for viewers to tune in on facts, and evidence presented. The show Moneyline goes under logos because it talks about politics. The variety show Sports Tonight can go under logos and pathos. The show Sports tonight goes under logos because it shows facts. The show People in the News can go in the categories logos and pathos. The show People in the News goes under logos because it talks about politics. The show Business Morning goes under logos because it talks about business. The show CNN Daybreak goes under logos because it is about …show more content…
news. Pathos can be found in the website CNN.
Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Examples of pathos can be sadness, anger, strength, and pain. I think CNN uses these types of emotions by using different colors for descriptions using context headlines and articles. It makes you angry looking at the way politics are paying to the government which is penalizing the communities . They use blue and red words. They use red if it is really important and they also use red for anger and blue to grab the reader's attention. An example of sadness comes from the amount of deaths tallying up over the United States and the year has just begun. It also is invoking the pain factor on our hearts for the families of the events that are going on globally. Strength can also be an emotion that can play on thus seen thru the different tab links like health. They use the color green to represent health because it makes you think of the environment. They use the color blue for money because money can be used for business, markets, and global. They show the color red if it is very important. They also use the color red when something is
live. The color green they use for health that makes you think of the environment can also make you think of things like fruits, vegetables, and different types of health. Sports Tonight goes in the category pathos because there can be emotions in it. The show People in the News goes under pathos because it shows sports for entertainment. The tabs sports and entertainment can go under pathos. Sports goes under pathos because sports can become emotional. Entertainment can go under pathos because you can have emotions when you are having fun. The website CNN is very effective in achieving its purpose to the politicians and students that are the audience. It is effective to the audience for three reasons. First it has strong credibility, second it is listed in chronological order to make it easier to find articles, and third it can appeal to strong emotions.
For example, Yousafzai speaks about girls and boys education because "... they are suffering the most" (Eleven). Using the word "suffering" draws emotion from the listeners or readers. This is using pathos because it is evoking emotion. In addition, Yousafzai shows that “... innocent and poor children are victims of child labor,” (Ten) instead of getting an education. Saying that the children are innocent and poor brings out emotion, evoking pathos. This adds to her claim by making education sound even more important. Pathos is used to evoke emotion from the audience about her claim.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Pathos: is an approach that appeals to the audience’s emotions. Including specific examples showing how tragedies have been avoided thanks to first responders being trained. Also, included in Pathos are examples on how tragedies have happen due to the misunderstanding
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
Logos, in this commercial, it is to make the audience feel the same way as you do. As you can see in the video, everyone is having fun and a good
Clinton uses logos to support her ideas on how to run the country. Logos is the appeal of using logic to assist a statement
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
A TED Talk video is spreading ideas in a speech that takes about eighteen minutes or less.In a TED Video, the speaker uses Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, to persuade their audience to believe them.Ethos is an ethical appeal (credibility), convincing the audience that the speaker is someone worth them listening to.Pathos is when the speaker uses emotions to persuade their audience.Logos is when the speaker uses reasoning and common sense to get to their audience.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
The action of the protagonist in “Ambush” killing the young man was justifiable beyond a reasonable doubt. In war, one is thrown into a life and death situation, in this case either the protagonist or the young man, who was identifiable as “the enemy”, were to die. In war, the goal is to survive and win the war in any way possible, and generally this will require one to kill the enemy. Because of this, the protagonist acted in such a way that, given the critical situation, was completely justifiable. One should not be criticized for killing another in war, especially since one is acting to save their life and their country. Each soldier has the duty to serve their country, and the country expects that when a soldier serves, the soldier will
Firstly, Logos is an appeal to logic, this method is used to persuade an audience by reason. “Logos can be developed by using advanced, theoretical or abstract language, citing facts (very important), using historical and literal analogies, and by
Pathos is a way of making you feel an emotion when reading the writing, When reading something you are usually left with an opinion, well that an emotion of what you feel about the article, novel, story, and ect. Staples adds pathos to this article to emphasize how bad racism was during 1986. A quote found in this article is “ As a softy who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken- let alone hold one to a person's throat- I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once” (Staples 2). He
I find myself diving into books right now – fact: reading reduces stress. The genre isn’t important. Riding the emotional roller coaster created by conflicting characters, action and adventure, or just the ups and downs of a budding romance, I sigh in contentment.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
Studies show that human beings typically make decisions based on emotions first (Pathos) and then look for facts and figures to justify it (Logos). Audience members do the same, they seek first to inspire an emotion in them, then, deliver the analysis to justify the emotion.
