Pathos being the Greek word for “experience” is often called the emotional appeal because it persuades a person through their emotions and feelings. In my opinion, Pathos is the most important appeal because it causes the audience to identify as well as respond emotionally to the writer’s point of view, i.e., to feel what the writer feels. Apart from the emotional side, pathos has an imaginative side to an article or text as well. For example, President Obama’s speech on the assassination of Osama Bin Laden, Pathos is seen when he describes that day by saying ”The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up
from the Pentagon……”. By giving this narrative description, there is an imaginative impact of the story on the audience’s minds as they picture the horrific scene as well as feel grief and sorrow at the same time. Very often a good orator or writer usually changes an audience’s perspective by “playing upon the listener’s or reader’s emotions” because we do things most of the time in our self-interest and therefore we tend to naturally side with people who satisfy our interests than those who don’t and this is how they connect these emotions with elements of their speech. From the article, for example, though pathos is not used to a great extent, it is still there. Schalet wants the audience to decide whether parents should or shouldn’t openly communicate with their children having sex under their roof or completely forbid it. By questioning them, she wants to make them understand that it is important to have an open conversation and talk to their children about sex and its “unintended consequences and urge them to use contraceptives and practice safe sex” otherwise the concern of American parents for their teenagers only grows and that is how conflicts arise.
There are three methods of persuasion when speaking or writing to an audience: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. Ethos uses a type of socially recognized authority as its voice. Logos uses logic and reasoning as its tool. Lastly, Pathos uses emotional attachment. For instance, the advertising industry primarily utilizes Ethos and Pathos reasoning and qualities, particularly a Matthew Mcconaughey Lincoln Motor Company commercial, and a Safe driving bonus check Ally Insurance commercial.
Pathos is an emotional appeal in which the advertisers hope that the consumers will allow their claim. Say for instance most people will notice a puppy behind what looks like to be a rusty cage. Seeing a cage like that, makes some wonder how bad the conditions are that the puppy is living in. then there is the puppy who looks very solemn, sad, and miserable. It makes one think how can people do this, why would they do this. Pathos is the appeal to an audience’s emotion. Aside from the other two appeals that I have outlined in this essay, pathos is by far the most recognizable appeal in Lamott’s article. The humorous tone of the article is very easily recognized and frankly, it is hard not to laugh at some of Lamott’s uncalled-for sarcastic remarks (whether it be in your head or out loud). For example, when writing about how every writer she knows never writes an elegant first draft, she continues, “All right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much. We do not think that she has a rich inner life or that God likes her or can even stand her” (1). By making such presumptuous claims about this person, some audiences might find this type of language comical or entertaining, which in turn makes them want to believe Lamott and continue reading. In a way this helps Lamott seem credible to some readers, in which case she has created a successful argument. On the other hand, some readers might find this kind of language unprofessional and inappropriate. Because much of the article deals with language that is full of humor and sarcasm, it would make sense to say that Lamott has directed this article towards an audience who is looking for something more entertaining than a typical statistic-filled essay that one might consider mainstream in this field. Each emotion plays a very big role in Riley’s life because they chose how she should feel during every second of the day since she was born. She appeals to the reader’s sense of American patriotism and freedom to try to sway the opinions of the reader. Good writing is an elusive topic that is always changing as we learn. The biggest aspects of good writing are genre, audience, purpose, and the three appeals--ethos, pathos and logos. Good writers need to write within a specific genre and the conventions that come with it. Good writing also considers the audience and potential secondary audiences. Purpose plays into good writing because without purpose writing is pointless, a good writer needs to know what they are trying to accomplish and who their writing is intended for, so this is closely tied to audience. Finally, good writing requires a balance of ethos, pathos, and logos that depends on the situation. There are many aspects of good writing, and they change based on the type of writing.

Pathos can be used to provoke any type of emotional response from an audience, an example of another emotion targeted by authors/ speakers is anger.
