The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Quilting is the making of quilts, especially as a craft or leisure activity. Quilting is also the reconstruction of tailored fabrics and is consistent with a certain structure regrading to a design pattern. Art is also used for craft and leisure activity. Art and quilting can be used for expression and storytelling. Some of the quilts today are used for artistic expression and social commentary. The stories in the quilts told about the history of the country and also the story of the person who made them. “At a time when society felt that there were limits on what was appropriate for women to say or do, the fact that women could gather together to create a quilt that expressed their patriotism, their support of the temperance movement, or their religious beliefs provided an outlet that did not ruffle society.”(Kelly, American Quilts as Art as Well as Documents of Politics and History). The women would use their quilts to express how they felt about politics before the women had the rights we have nowadays. A popular type of quilt from the mid to the late 1870’s were friendship quilts, which are also still popular today. These type of quilts were individual quilt squares with handwritten poems or sayings signed by the maker.”The quilt might be a special one with signatures of friends and family. These friendship quilts served as a precious memory not only to women who stayed in one place all their life but also for those who moved on to hardships in westward lands. These pioneer women would only have occasional letters to connect them with friends and relatives. Many a lonely woman living out on an isolated homestead cherished her friendship quilt. Some of the types of quilts are rag quilts, traditional, Modern, art quilts, civil war, amish quilts, and crazy quilts. Rag quilts have seams that have exposed seam allowances on the front and finish and traditional seams on the back. A traditional quilt tends to be a series of same blocks or a couple of blocks, which work together, and are made with same or different fabrics. The blocks are quite often standard blocks and occasionally is often a series of repetitive tasks to make it with the key to being a very wonderful quilt is the workmanship in making it and the quilting which can either be by hand or machine. "Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid colors, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid of work.
