Politics, family feuds, and land disputes are just a few things that can destroy a community. They may be idiotic arguments but they exist in almost every community. When you think about a community free of arguing and disagreements, those three issues would not exist. There would be peace, happiness, and no discussion of politics at the dinner table because we all know how that ends, poorly. Everyone would treat their neighbors the way they would want to be treated. People would say, “bless you”, to everyone, no matter who sneezes. It would be the most joyous community. In my own community of Alpena, we are not extremely rude or terrible. We do not have huge family feuds or land disputes. The one thing that Alpena needs to work on is manners, …show more content…
I know that farmers sometimes have a reputation for having bad manners while eating or walking down the hallway swearing up a storm, I am here to tell you that that is true ninety percent of the time, for not just the farmers but for hometown people as well. My school is consisted of mostly those two categories. When I am walking down the hallways at school going from one class to another, I probably hear at least twenty swear words, most of them being the REALLY bad ones. My mother taught me that swearing was wrong at a young age; she gave me a good example by almost never swearing. She believes them to be unnecessary words and I completely agree with her. When people swear on social media and in public, I believe it looks immature and unprofessional. We could solve this issue by enforcing stricter punishments to those who swear all the time. Now onto the subject of manners while eating. Another thing my mother taught me when I young was to NEVER put your elbows on the table. That was one of her biggest pet peeves. When she sees people with their elbows on the tables in restaurants, she cringes a little. Also she taught me brothers and I to NEVER chew with our mouths open. Now that is the thing I catch people doing all the time. I think it is disgusting and is one of my biggest pet peeves. I do not need to see what you are eating. Keep it to yourself. We could solve this problem by making etiquette classes available. People who have excellent manners seem happier to me. I believe that if the people in Alpena started using better manners, our community would be more beloved and
Swearing has the ability to get someone in a whole load of trouble at the dinner table with their mother but could also be their choice of words when they accidently stub their toe on the coffee table in the living room. Natalie Angier discusses this controversial topic of words that shouldn’t be said in her article feature in The New York Times, “Almost Before We Spoke, We Swore”. Provoked by a recently proposed bill to increase fines for using swear words on television, Angier analyzes not only the impact of swearing, but also where the desire to speak obscene words comes from. She references many credible studies and sources as she unfolds her argument. She uses a diverse slew of studies, experiments, and famous pieces of literature and
Every person feels rivalry or competition towards others at some point in their lives. This rivalry greatly affects our ability to understand others, and this eventually results in paranoia and hostility. It is a part of human nature, that people coldly drive ahead for their gain alone. Man's inhumanity towards man is a way for people to protect themselves from having pain inflicted on them by others, and achieving their goals and desires without the interference of others. This concept of man's inhumanity to man is developed in A Separate Peace as the primary conflict in the novel centres on the main character, Gene, and his inner-battles with feelings of jealousy, paranoia, and inability to understand his relationship with his best friend Phineas. Competition is further demonstrated by the occurrence of World War II. It is shown that, "There were few relationships among us (the students) at Devon not based on rivalry." (p. 37) It is this rivalry and competition between the boys at Devon that ripped their friendships apart.
The real question, however, is what the balance of values achieved might be if the local community were chosen over the global one. Indeed, what are the values favored by this kind of community? Autonomy is clearly one. Genuine face-to-face contact with people is another. Stewardship of the local environment is another.
Community is like a Venn diagram. It is all about relations between a finite group of people or things. People have their own circles and, sometimes, these circles overlap one another. These interceptions are interests, common attitudes and goals that we share together. These interceptions bond us together as a community, as a Venn diagram. A good community needs good communication where people speak and listen to each other openly and honestly. It needs ti...
Communities are constantly changing, and communities that do not, or do it very slowly, are destined to die. This is shown in the book The Chrysalids by John Wyndham. In the book, the communities in Labrador are strictly religious and reject any one who does not follow the ‘true image of man’. They think they are improving, but are actually setting themselves up for failure. The dangers of going against change are they go against evolution and cannot adapt to changes in their environment. They slow down science and technological improvements. They also unnecessary fear in the community.
In the late 1800’s it was discovered that papa-amino-phenol, could reduce fever, but the drug was too toxic to use. A less toxic extract called phenacetin was later found to be just as effective but also had pain-relieving properties. In 1949, it was learned that phenacetin was metabolized into an active but also less toxic drug, acetaminophen. Since then, acetaminophen has been sold under many over the counter brand names, most popular being Tylenol.
Achieving unity within a country is the most fundamental and central goal of a nation. In order for a county to unite, they must first achieve unification in what values they hold to be important. They also need to be in accordance with one another as to how the country works and how they wish to be governed. These factors help create a region's identity and make it different from areas around it. It is a goal most difficult to accomplish due to the discrepancies between cultures, religions, personal beliefs and many other factors that may exist in that area.
Community building can depict an idea of people coming together for a common purpose. The purpose may be unclear on why people are becoming a union, though it may involve the inclusion of people. In “Once Upon a Time” and “Rituals of Memory” both include the gathering of people, however the reasons for their togetherness are very different.
What is Oleanna ? Is it a perfect world, or is it a world… The play
Comedy in literary works is not used merely as a form of entertainment. Oftentimes, authors employ the use of comedy to present social criticisms in a particular society during a given timeframe. This is proven true in The Mandrake Root or La Mandragola, a satirical play written by Italian philosopher Niccoló Machiavelli. In this comedy, the playwright relates his views on certain ideas to a seemingly ordinary life: Callimaco, a young man, is attracted to whom he deems the most beautiful young woman he has ever laid his eyes on, Lucrezia, who is married to an older man named Nicia. Due to his growing lust, Callimaco agrees to carry out a plan devised by Ligurio, a Machiavellian figure, to access Lucrezia. Through his use of humor, wit, and
Marijuana is a plant containing a psychoactive chemical, THC are in its leaves, buds, and flowers. It has been shown that marijuana helps cancer, chemotheraps, AIDS, HIV, glocoma, muscle spasticity, and neurological disorders (www.drugpolicy.org). Medical use of marijuana should be allowed because it is not as addictive as pain medications, it helps with pain and stress, and it helps chronic illnesses.
A community is comprised of a group of goal oriented individuals with similar beliefs and expectations. Currently the term is used interchangeably with society, the town one lives in and even religion. A less shallow interpretation suggests that community embodies a lifestyle unique to its members. Similarities within the group establish bonds along with ideals, values, and strength in numbers unknown to an individual. Ideals and values ultimately impose the culture that the constituents abide by. By becoming part of a community, socialization...
According to the ABC News survey, 73 percent of Americans feel manners are worse today than they were 20 or 30 years ago. Although character education is a hot topic in schools across the nation, education in maners often receives scant attention; with growing demands on teaching time, etiquette is rarely a priority. It might be a mistake to ignore the adage that actions speak louder than words, however. Teachers who teach manners said they notice a real difference in students' attitudes, in the way they treat one another, and in their schoolwork. Although some might say that manners are to be taught from the parents, the places children learn to socialize are not only at home, but also at school; it is their second home. A child either learns different moral values from his home or from his school. These days with both of the parents working, a child rarely gets the opportunity to learn moral and social values from home. In the past, although the parents were working, grandparents took care of their grandchildren and taught them important lessons of life, however, this is no longer prevalent as more and more families get unconcerned of teaching manners to young people. Of course not all the parents are failing to teach manners, but it is surprising to see many adults who do not know the correct ways of being respectful. Then how are they to educate their children? Thus, the only way we can ensure our future generation to learn etiquette is by schools.
Remember your mother telling you that life was not fair? That a person who is less deserving than another will be rewarded for something that should not have been theirs in the first place, but for us to learn how to deal with it; cautioning our behaviors before scolding us if we did not react adequately. As children, we were being taught manners and to be courteous to others. Because both parents work outside of the home anymore, teaching manners and moral to our children is a lost practice. With that said, herein lies the problem, people have gotten so wrapped up in their lives that they have forgotten they are not the only thing that inhibits this earth, forgetting that people
Everyone has their own perception of an ideal community. For each person the factors of an ideal community will vary depending on their upbringing. My understanding of a community is a place where a group of people live, and socialize. Everyone is caring, thoughtful, and respectful. In my community people take care of each other they think before they act, and are respectful to one another keeping in mind equality.
