Rudeness: The Decline in Civility or a Sign of the Times?
Remember your mother telling you that life was not fair? That a person who is less deserving than another will be rewarded for something that should not have been theirs in the first place, but for us to learn how to deal with it; cautioning our behaviors before scolding us if we did not react adequately. As children, we were being taught manners and to be courteous to others. Because both parents work outside of the home anymore, teaching manners and moral to our children is a lost practice. With that said, herein lies the problem, people have gotten so wrapped up in their lives that they have forgotten they are not the only thing that inhibits this earth, forgetting that people

As stated by Alex Packer, “many people just don 't think about how their behavior affects anyone else. It 's me, not we” (Tarshis). We want what we want and are willing to leave a wake of destruction in our paths to obtain it. Consequently, never taking account for the innocent bystander that may have just been offended by whatever action infringed upon during that moment. "There 's a manners meltdown in America, people just don’t know how to treat others anymore," says Alex J. Packer, author of the Teen Manners Guide How Rude! (Tarshis).
Ordinarily, people witness vulgar acts and retaliate accordingly. While shopping on Black Friday, it is not uncommon to watch someone steal something out of someone else’s cart, causing an unruly argument in the store, or witness someone flipping another person off while driving down the

According to Tony de Joux, author of “Rights go with responsibilities, “Society must realize that rights and obligations go hand-in-hand. Until then, we 'll continue to have a society that has difficulty establishing moral boundaries.” This problem is an ongoing battle and needs to be further addressed starting with our children at home. “For every right, there 's an equal obligation, but nowhere are these seen” states Tony de Joux (Rights). If we establish a stricter rule of thumb for occasions when rudeness arises, we can meet this head on and hopefully bring it back into the minds of the public. Thus, possibly curing this ever growing infection of rudeness; bring back the Ten Commandments, so we may love thine neighbor as we love ourselves and refresh our children’s moral
For as long as I can remember I’ve heard the saying, “Be the change you want to see.” While I understood what it meant I never really grasped why it was important to do so. If we don’t take the initiative to instill in our children the morals that our society lacks then the cycle will continue of disregard for others. We need to teach our children to seek who they are, and what they want out of life. Once
People go on and on about how they wish that others would be nicer or more helpful, yet they themselves are rude, inconsiderate, and could care less about other peoples
“Treat others the way you want to be treated” is something burned into the minds of
Throughout all of humanity, people have been shunning other people for many reasons. Whether it be the differences between two people or the wrongdoings of a person, it almost seems like human nature for people to turn away from each other. A person would think that over time, society would become more accepting of others, but instead, it seems that the things that have been seen to be unfit for society in the past still hold true today. Traditions and beliefs are still prevalent today, and when someone goes against them, it is seen as a reason to create a pariah out of the person. Whether it’d be the lepers of the past or the whistleblowers of today, shunning is still commonplace in todays society.
I always remember what my grandmother said to me, “Be careful what you say, what words you use because they can destroy or give hope. Once they are said never could be deleted it from people’s hearts.” That day I learned that words are powerful. According to the article “Free Speech: Westboro Church Supreme Court Case First Amendment” in Christian Science Monitor, author Warren Richey discusses about The First Amendment to define what is offensive and it shows historical facts where the Supreme Court is using the First Amendment to resolve the cases about offensive speech. Also, the author describes people in favor and against of offensive speech. The author concluded that offensive speech should not be banned because free speech is the free
Within the few weeks that composed the busiest shopping time of the year, customers were able to diminish my joy for the holiday season. My first anti-holiday experience occurred when I was learning how to run the registers. At this time, I was also learning that parents tend to feel a great need to please their children by purchasing the trendiest toys and by spending hundreds of dollars on Christmas presents. One such “guest,” as we are encouraged to refer to customers, a thin woman with fluffed brown hair, came through my lane with a cart full of toys.
In the article, “American Jerk: Be Civil or I’ll Beat You to a Pulp," by Todd Schwartz, Schwartz discusses his belief that people can be self-centered and can act Very selfishly while pretending to be civil. He believes that our civilation has progressed to the point where we no longer care about anything at all. While I agree with a lot of Schwartz's statements and conclusions, I also disagree with many things He said.
For hundreds of years Thanksgiving has been a holiday filled with traditions celebrating family and togetherness. The day after thanksgiving known as “Black Friday” is a day for shopping and taking advantage of greatly reduced prices. The recent decision by retailers to move Black Friday to Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, has caused quite a stir among many families. People have become upset over the decision to turn a day of gratitude and family, into another day of greed and violence. Retailers should not open their stores on Thanksgiving Day because doing so will cause many employees to miss out on spending a special day with their families, cause people to forget about the thanks and festivities that thanksgiving represents, and create more violence in stores and violence towards people.
I believe that people should treat others with the respect they deserve and treat them as equals. I was a well respected middle class individual. I had a beautiful wife and two exquisite daughters named Margot and Anne. Then all of this was taken from me.
Incivility has skyrocketed in the last couple years it seems that just about any public place people go incivility is always present please, thank you, and excuse me have been replaced with silence or insults. Movie theaters are a perfect example of incivility in common places. The common courtesy of turning off one’s cellphone so it doesn’t ring during the movie has become a suggestion as oppose to a courtesy that many people choose to ignore. Not talking during the movie has also become a rule many choose not to follow more focused on what they want to say instead of how it will bother others. DMVS, parking lots, stores, and public libraries all demonstrate how uncivil we as a society can truly be. In crowded stores, people are bound to bump
Today's human society is rather vulgar and egotistical. People think that the world revolves around them and that they can do and say whatever they hanker. They assume that what they do doesn't influence other people. They couldn't be more inaccurate.
According to the ABC News survey, 73 percent of Americans feel manners are worse today than they were 20 or 30 years ago. Although character education is a hot topic in schools across the nation, education in maners often receives scant attention; with growing demands on teaching time, etiquette is rarely a priority. It might be a mistake to ignore the adage that actions speak louder than words, however. Teachers who teach manners said they notice a real difference in students' attitudes, in the way they treat one another, and in their schoolwork. Although some might say that manners are to be taught from the parents, the places children learn to socialize are not only at home, but also at school; it is their second home. A child either learns different moral values from his home or from his school. These days with both of the parents working, a child rarely gets the opportunity to learn moral and social values from home. In the past, although the parents were working, grandparents took care of their grandchildren and taught them important lessons of life, however, this is no longer prevalent as more and more families get unconcerned of teaching manners to young people. Of course not all the parents are failing to teach manners, but it is surprising to see many adults who do not know the correct ways of being respectful. Then how are they to educate their children? Thus, the only way we can ensure our future generation to learn etiquette is by schools.
Offensiveness usually angers someone to an extent where they are uncomfortable. Natural Law doesn't actually clarify many things that can help us become stronger people.
In my life I would definitely say I 've seen some people with bad manners. I know for a fact that I also have bad manners but I 've never been rude to anyone. Understanding that we need to stop judging each other and instead love each other will take us one step closer to some peace in this world. At the end of the day we need to work on encouragement and positive thoughts for other people. If more people thought before they acted there would definitely be less conflict and more building for the future.
We all know what it is, and we know it’s not a good thing. Bullying has been around for ages, and has gotten worse as time has progressed. With all the technology the world has today, bullying is not only occurring at school and work, but online as well. Most individuals try to ignore a bully, but sometimes ignoring it makes the situation even worse. Bullying is a serious subject that needs to be looked at more. Individuals are being affected by bullying in a negative way, causing a lowering of self-esteem, depression and sometimes even suicide.
