Everyone, no matter how successful they are, will always face some sort of criticism. Although some may endure more hurtful comments and actions than others will, it is bound to happen to everyone at one point or another. This is evident in the story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury and the song “Energy” by Drake, since both texts are centered on others trying to bring them down. “All Summer in a Day” is a story about a young girl named Margot who lives on Venus, a monsoon planet. All the other little boys and girls are jealous of the fact that she remembers of the sun, so when it finally comes out, they lock her in a closet and she misses the chance she was waiting for to see it again. Repetition is used in both texts. For example, in “All Summer in a Day”, Margot uses repetition when she describes the sun. She repeatedly starts her sentences with “It’s like a…” The repetition is used in order to show how all the other kids want what Margot has which is why they treat her so cruelly. In “Energy” Drake says “I bought this one a purse, I bought this one a truck. I bought this one a house, I bought this one a mall.” Here, Drake uses repetition to sort-of show off his fame to show how others envy him because of his success. In both texts, a common craft moves is used to reveal how badly both characters are treated just because they have something others don’t. In both texts, symbolism is used for different purposes. Although “All Summer in a Day” and “Energy” may share a common theme, the symbolism shows both characters’ approaches to the adversity they face. For example in “All Summer in a Day”, the sun symbolizes happiness. This is evident all throughout the story, but one place where it is very revealing is when Bradbury wrote “they put their hands up to that yellowness and that amazing blueness and they breathed of the fresh, fresh air and listened and listened to the silence which suspended them in a blessed sea of no sound and no motion. They looked at everything and savored everything. Then, wildly, like animals escaped from their caves, they ran and ran in shouting circles. They ran for an hour and did not stop running. And then - In the midst of their running one of the girls wailed. Everyone stopped. [...] A few cold drops fell on their noses and their cheeks and their mouths. The sun faded behind a stir of mist. A wind blew cold around them. They turned and started to walk back toward the underground house, their hands at their sides, their smiles vanishing away.” This excerpt from the story was when all the other children were out enjoying the sun and being all cheerful only to have it suddenly snatched away from them.
