After The Dark Philosophical Analysis
The film After the Dark poses many different philosophical scenarios that aren’t so easily solved. The film starts off with Mr. Zimit essentially creating an end of the world scenario in which limited numbers of students will be able to survive. This hypothetical scenario is very unique because of how complex it is. The students have to decide which ten of group will be most beneficial to staying in a bunker to help repopulate and save the human race based on their individual characteristics and skillsets. The students quickly start to analyze the situation and find out that it is very hard to argue against logic and rational choices regardless of their personal emotions. With the sole purpose of this exercise being to select a group to repopulate the earth and save humanity, many of these stipulations cause people to change their minds. People who at first seemed to have productive features like being a farmer were giving less attractive characteristics like also being gay, therefore not as useful for reproduction. Many of these changes lead to tough decision making by the group. The decision making of the students tends to fall more into the categories of Empiricism. They trust their senses of what they feel and what they think is right and wrong. Much of their decision making tends to go against logic. I think that overall this film and these characters show that logic clearly has a place in life but if a life is only lived by logical terms then it isn’t much of a life. From a logical standpoint many of the most vital parts of our lives were left out when they were forced to choose people. Many of the artists, dancers, and writers weren’t logical choices for survival at that moment but they are still key elements of everything that we do in our lives. To me this film not only put me in these scenarios with the students and forced me to solve problems with logic and emotions but it showed me that maybe it doesn’t always have to be one or the other when it comes to logic versus our feelings. At the end of the day I believe it all comes down to perspective of the individual and what they choose based on their own logic and feelings. To me this battle of Logic/Rationalism vs.
Emotion/Empiricism has ended in a draw as they both serve purposes of equal proportions in all that we
