Introduction:
The basic purpose of this essay is to evaluate a common disorder of our society that is infecting people throughout World and particularly in the U.S. This disorder is called "Affluenza" it is very catching and once polluted with the disease it is difficult to be overthrown.
"Affluenza" is characterized as an unhealthful connection with money, blown up hopes and tiresome efforts to keep up with the Joneses. "Affluenza" creates anxiety, bankruptcy, and becomes the reason of several problems in associations. Even though, there are some people who have unlike definitions for "Affluenza". Many people find "Affluenza" to be a rich man's mental sickness and have responded by suggesting that the world has bigger problems without have to feel sorry for the wealthy.
John de Graaf, an award-winning documentary producer for over two decades did a documentary on America's custom of over-consumption in late 1990s. He defines "Affluenza is a painful, contagious, socially-transmitted condition of overload, debt, anxiety and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more," (De Graff, J. & Wann, D )
Affluenza in The U.S. and Its Cure
The authors, De Graff and Wann did their best to prove to the readers in their book, "Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic" that The "American society is affected by Affluenza", and then they talk about what they think should be done to take care of the disease.
"Affluenza" enforces one to re-examine his/her way of life. It forces to think about what is most important: relations with friends and relatives, emotion like life has significance, and time to do the things. De Graff suggests to think twice before spending money. The book also reinforces the need to help the surroundings and atmosphere: recycling more, trying harder to buy environmentally friendly goods, and using less paper. The book certainly has made its contribution towards finding a solution to the nationwide problem of over-consumption.[Richins, M.L].
To support De Graff's statement, I would argue that "Affluenza" can be cured and maybe prohibited. In analyzing "Affluenza" I hope to shed insight those possibilities.
Facts and Figures:
This is a disease that is affecting the U.S. at a shocking velocity. It is very infectious and growing at terrifying rates.
"Luxury spending in the United States has been growing more than four times as fast as overall spending, and the rest of the West is not far behind. And this spending is being done by younger and younger consumers.
America has always seen as the symbolic ideal country of prosperity and equality. This is the reason why people come to America hoping to become successful, but in matter of fact we all have an equal plan field to be successful is not entirely true. For there are social boundaries that keep use limited based upon our own status. Whether we are born of a low class or of a high class the possibility of economic mobility in a sense are predetermined by two factors of social class and success together they both affecting one’s another opportunity of success. In order to achieve success, we must know that it is made up of two main concepts and they are fortune and position. But when a person is limited by their class prohibiting them to achieve success, the point of trying is meaningless. However, there is a way to break the construct that keep groups stuck in the lower-class and is through education. Education gives more opportunities for success to the individuals and since education is very important, culture and the government should focus more directly upon this to reach economic stability. Class standing directly affects economic success in America by limiting a person’s chance of success however; one can overcome by focusing more upon education and culture.
Having a good income liberates some extra stress from people’s lives. In the film, the narrator compares people with different income status, the narrator interviews these two different families in order to observe how income can influence people’s health. According to the narrator, “In some areas, people die twice, and five, even ten years sooner than in others. Cancer and heart disease are almost twice the rate in some areas as in others.” (Page 2) Unnatural Cause-the narrator observes two districts in Louisiana; one area is populated of low income working class, and the other one the contrary. The narrator is interviewing Jim Taylor a sixty year old man who is CEO of a hospital. During the interview Taylor opinions about the benefits of living in a community of effluents. Such as, having less stress, being able to exercise without being afraid of being assaulted. In contrast, to a person who lives in working class community is harder to have a healthy lifestyle because of the lack of time, security and desires. Pertaining to desire, working class people have to work long hours in factory to earn at least 20,000.00 per year, so they end their days extremely tired. Furthermore, wealthy peoples can afford a better quality of nutrition. Thus, people with a low income prefer to buy foods according to the quantity instead of quality. In fact, social stress is the more common
With each class comes a certain level in financial standing, the lower class having the lowest income and the upper class having the highest income. According to Mantsios’ “Class in America” the wealthiest one percent of the American population hold thirty-four percent of the total national wealth and while this is going on nearly thirty-seven million Americans across the nation live in unrelenting poverty (Mantsios 284-6). There is a clear difference in the way that these two groups of people live, one is extreme poverty and the other extremely
However, the advertisers promoting these value and goods are not organizations, corporations, or governing powers, they are ordinary people. Annie White’s interactions with her Jamaican family living in America dictated the values she associated with American goods. According to White, many of her peers believed that owning any American goods meant an increase in status, because they saw America as a country which represented wealth and success (A. White, personal communication, October 15, 2016). As a result, many people rely on commodities and goods to indicate status. In his article, “Conspicuous Consumption” (1899), Thorstein Veblen suggests that “consumption of higher quality goods denotes his [or her] evidence of wealth. Being able to consume in due quantity and quality becomes an indication of inferiority” (Veblen, 2000, 190). In other words, consuming American goods– to indicate wealth and establish a social hierarchy in which they have the highest prestige over
“Proper society did not think about making money, only about spending it.”, said Barbara W. Tuchman. This quote shows our real world, and the people that spend money, but they forget about the value of money. Nowadays people want more that they have. They forget how many things they have, and how much money they spend. Most people when they see other people having something better, and in that moment they want to have it also. Also, people forget how hard they got that money, but how easily and quickly they spend it. In the article “The treadmill of consumption” by Roberts, he says that people are willing to go into debt to buy certain products and brands. That is right that people can do crazy things to buy certain goods.
Being in America, a society encompassed by those of a wealthy nature versus those striving to obtain as much wealth as they can in their own limitations, it seems inevitable for one to pass judgment on those who choose the glamorous lifestyle over any morals they may have had prior to their riches. After reading Money and Class in America, it can be concluded that Mr. Lewis Lapham makes an intriguing point as he states that it is seemingly unintelligent to assume that one that is wealthy in pocket is also wealthy in intelligence. Everyday, greed filled Americans prove this judgment to be blatantly wrong, as they partake in the extravagant lifestyle without much thought in the immorality that comes with the lifestyle. Though some may say that
Veblen’s work was, and continues to be, quite controversial; however, his dissections of human behavior as it relates to social structure and consumption were far from inaccurate. Interestingly enough, it seems that his theories have even become increasingly accurate over time, as proved by the way conspicuous consumption and “Veblan effects,” have both played a significant role in changing not only the luxury fashion industry as a whole, but also in changing the image and symbolic nature of the luxury good.
The Article “Perfection Anxiety” written by A.A Gill illustrates through his findings, that while the means to have everything you desire is by no means bad , neither is it the best. Throughout the article he talks about the phenomenon of “perfection anxiety”, a condition causing it’s host’s feelings of significant ennui, a circumstance found within the abhorrently wealthy portion of the world’s citizens. This psychological disorder is found to occur when the incomprehensibly rich have realized essentially, that they have run out of things to spend their money on, continuing to spend only to appease the ever imposing expectations and judgments of the wealthy.
Society today is split in many different ways: the smart and the dumb, the pretty and the ugly, the popular and the awkward, and of course the rich and the poor. This key difference has led to many areas of conflict among the population. The rich and the poor often have different views on issues, and have different problems within their lives. Moral decay and materialism are two issues prevalent among the wealthy, while things such as socio-economic class conflict and the American dream may be more important to those without money. Ethics and responsibilities are an area of thought for both classes, with noblesse oblige leaning more towards the wealthy.
...tlessly pursuing its own destructive materialism. It is a human fault however, having possessed wealth, like a drug, one must have more and more still until nothing else in the world matters. Money being power and power money, mankind foolishly is seen destroying itself for the betterment of a select few.
For my essay, I will write about the effects wealthy people have on society. I will determine how money ranks their classification, and what social standards have become over time. I will go into explanation about how society feels (upper and lower class feelings), what lower class people think should be done money wise, and what upper class people believe is right. I will determine how someone becomes rich or what is classified as wealthy and what advantages they have over the poor, or if it is just a myth that richer people live life better. I will determine if the money someone has makes their child smarter when it comes to learning or if home background doesn’t have a play in education; because in today’s society, the world revolves around money, social status, and classification; it isn’t based on what someone wants for themselves, earns, or what one feels is right for their needs, instead it is a competition to rise to the top, but why? How does wealth have such a big impact on our society and why is money what determines social status and class?
There is a sagacity in our states that the American Dream is not what it originally used to be. Study has revealed that it’s quite hard for juvenile or youths Americans originating from poor households to move to middle life status. Thus, many American citizens believe that the decline in economy mobility is leading to an increment or rise in income inequality. Income inequality has revealed a huge impact towards achieving the American dream; the rich keep getting rich while the poor get poorer (Clough, pg 15). Initially, the American dream was a realization towards the economic problem solution but frankly all this has changed. We can say there is such thing as the American Dream still existing. In my essay, I will illustrate more on the American
...le anxious, so the desire which hidden in the depths of their hearts will be aroused. At this moment, people would try to reach their goal by fair means or foul. They would think this is a smart way to get the respected by others and it’s the easy and fast way to get what they want. In some people's mind, money is simply a digital number. They always focus on the money and the profit and ignore the people who care about you. In the result those will look down upon you and you will disappoint them. Family love and human nature is no any unit can be measure which is priceless. Blindly pursuit of fame and wealth is not as good as their eyes on contemporary life, people need learn how to enjoy the several decades of the rest of our life, and cherish everyone who worth you to cherish next to you. Be thankful and grateful and make our world more beautiful and harmonious.
Our consumption rates as humans are high, especially those in first world countries. The article “8 Ways to a Happier you”, by Beth Janes, sets guidelines and gives recommendations to those in search of bettering their lifestyles. The article thoroughly explains ways one can reach his or her full potential through intellectual ways and physical ways. Bettering our mindsets and lifestyles requires many complex components. In the film From Prada To Nada, two young women living a luxurious lifestyle are suddenly turned around and lose all their wealth. Throughout the movie, however, the women learn from their mistakes and continually work harder for more money and physical objects. The film displays how the two women constantly hope and work for more in all areas of their lives. The majority of us strive to have nice things, healthy relationships, or even just what makes us happy, we want more in our lives, and will work harder to achieve as much as we possibly
Money is an essential part of life where every people can satisfy whatever they need and every person in America has a chance to find a job. However, some of the people in the country wanted to go on with their life freely by being a part of a welfare. Furthermore, distribution of wealth is a huge demand of every citizen. Everyone today is trying to look down for every people in the lower class, as they did not give any benefit to the country, waiting for the benefits that they will receive from the government. For instance, when most lower class people have gone through a financial crisis due to overspending, insufficient fund or pay for their work to support themselves and/or their family. The example shows that lower class people made the economy of the country unstable, however, the middle class and the higher class is at fault as well. Furthermore, even though the benefit of that the lower class received is from the middle class, the middle class as well benefits from the higher class. To sum up, every class is at fault towards giving the country’s economy a positive
