In a business world where competition is heavy and success is difficult to maintain it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to find the right way to structure an organization. There are numerous ways in which a business can be organized and this can be a leading determinant in how a business operates and performs on a daily basis. Many organizations are beginning to make the transition to a more team based structure, a structure that is less hierarchical in nature and more driven towards combining employees to complete an objective in the most efficient, best way possible. This structure has proven to be very successful in most cases, but it still comes with its disadvantages and flaws. What makes a team-based structure so great is that it essentially combines all these skills together and allows employees to collaborate and brainstorm with each other. When a team works together individual accolades are left behind as each member works toward accomplishing a common goal together as one. This leads to a greater amount of creativity and innovation in solving the problem at hand. Additionally, team-based structures eliminates layers of management which you would typically see in an organization. This allows for new ideas and concepts to be given greater attention and less management intervention. With less approvals needed for an idea to put into motion employees end up feeling more empowered and this creates a work environment filled to the brim with content individuals. Having looked at different models of management and team development, I have tried to consider the benefits of each one and identify the most effective model that relates to the sector that I work in as each model may be more effective within different industries.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a team as: “a number of persons associated together in work or activity,” or “a group of people who work together.” In the current information age more companies are relying on teams to solve challenging tasks and to reach more difficult goals. Since a team of professionals with varying expertise can produce solutions that an individual working alone would likely struggle with, it is no wonder teamwork is becoming increasingly valuable to companies across all industries.
The exploration of two models will show an interesting relationship when compared and contrasted. Both can increase competency levels in team building. The models are the Drexler/Sibbet Team Performance model (Human Performance Strategies) and the Four Stage Team Performance model (Developing Management Skills). When they have been used correctly they’ve been shown to improve efficiency and profitability in organizations. “Developing team skills is important because of the tremendous explosion in the use of teams in work organizations over the last decade (Developing Management Skills).” An examination of these models will show the similarities and differences they have in the context of team building.
Teams are groups of people who work together to achieve a common goal (Learning Team Handbook, p 310). Workplace teams are increasing as businesses find the yield of team productivity and creativity exceeds individual productivity/creativity. To promulgate productive teams, businesses have had to identify common threads for successful teams. Businesses have identified the dynamics and needs of successful teams.
Individuals have their own personalities that can influence their enthusiasm and productivity within an organization. In addition, individuals also form groups and are part of teams that work together to reach a common goal within organization. According to Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, and Konopaske (2009) dedicated and cohesive teams can have a tremendous impact on organizations effectiveness and the global market. However, all of this happens within the frame-work of office politics and can hinder or enhance the organization’s effectiveness. Therefore, it is important to not only understand individuals, but also groups, teams and office politics within the organization. This will help leaders to plan, organize and motive individuals and groups for the best possible outcome for the organization.
Bob Learmont, a manager at Wal-Mart in Grand Rapids Michigan, unites his employees every morning with a speech or quote of the day. He assimilated his employees using the fundamental aspect of business development: team building. In the competitive business market, corporations try to produce more with fewer resources. The corporations that have the highest production per worker along with limited resources, flourish in the business world. The main question many organizations struggle with is how to increase productivity. Research has proven team building exercises have drastically improved production in the workplace. The relationship between workers and their business, correlates directly with the productivity of a corporation. The most successful businesses such as Google, Wal-Mart, and Facebook, all have a core focus on worker relations and a stress free environment.
In order for a work place to be successful and beneficial to everyone involve in the company, teams needs to be form, and each team must have a goal in mind. Employees must come together to accomplish a common goal. Teamwork will not only benefit those involve in the project but it will also have a huge impact in your business.
When we think of the word team, individually many different ideas may come to mind about what a team really is. Some may think of an NFL team (Tennessee Titans), an NBA team (Sacramento Kings), or a NASA astronaut team with such pioneers as Edwin Aldrin, Jr. and Neil Armstrong as members.
