Cultural diversity is a complex concept, which combines different characteristics and knowledge of a society together (Cathryn, Yong & Robert 2008, p.58). University is a huge society combined students from different places, even different countries. In university, cultural diversity provides benefits and drawbacks to students. For students, the language barrier is a huge problem they will face when they study aboard, and this language barrier exists because most of the places with different cultures have the different language. For foreign students, especially those second language learners, it will not be easy to understand what professors told in class as local students. This is not good for students grade and also means students have to spend extra time to study. Also, the language barrier leads to more work for the professors, because foreign students will ask more questions to help themselves to understand the knowledge. So professors have to spend lots of time to explain the knowledge and help those students to understand. Although language barrier will cause extra work for both students and professors, the language barrier problem can be solved. For example, when foreign students go to America to study, they have to take tests like TOEFL, which is an important English language skill test for foreign students to study in the English-speaking country, and this test will show if the student has the ability to study in the English-speaking country or not (ets 2017). When foreign students pass those tests, they will have enough English language skill for study in the English-speaking country. This kind of test help universities to make sure that their students can overcome the language barrier and study in their school same with other local students. Even it is almost impossible for foreign students to have the good language skill as the local students, passing this test makes those students have less language barrier and reduces this
Just because other perspectives are incorporated in the classroom, this doesn’t mean that everyone will become more understanding and appreciative of other cultures. Universities that have diversity help out their students more than anyone could imagine. It help students get ready to open up and understand one another on a more personal level. Some students grow up in segregated towns where there is not much diversity, but with the help of diversity from colleges, students will learn to learn and accept one another. Multicultural education is a process of comprehensive school reform and basic education for all students. It challenges and rejects racism and other forms of discrimination in schools and society and accepts and affirms pluralism (ethnic, racial, linguistic, religious, economic, and gender, among others) that students, their communities, and teachers reflect (Nieto, 2000).
The cultural diversity in society, which is reflected in schools, is forcing schools not to solely rely on content-centered curriculum, but to also incorporate student-centered lesson plans based on critique and inquiry. This requires multicultural education to a dominant part of the school system, not just an extra course or unit. Further, it demands that learning itself no longer be seen as obtaining knowledge but rather, education be seen as creating knowledge. Multicultural education should be seen as affirming the diversity of students and communities, promoting the multicultural ideas of the United States, and building the knowledge and behaviors needed for students to be a positive and contributing member of society and the global community as a whole.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children.
