Understanding active leadership skills is the essence of leadership through the eyes of successful CEOs and the Western philosopher Cicero from the 1st century. Cicero’s philosophy helps business owners, students and educators to understand how leadership skills assist managers in the business world today. Amazingly in the 21st century the same principles are being practiced as guidelines for business ethics and management. Bragues relates present day management skill through the Ciceronian study’s that consist of: wisdom, justice, greatness and spirit. Hard work plus evidence are factors that fuel active leadership skills proving Cicero theory from 1st century “do no harm mentality” (Bragues, 2010).
While practicing active leadership skills, honor is an attribute that leaders must have“The honor of a business leader is secured by the practice of four virtues: wisdom, justice, greatness of spirit, and seemliness” (Bragues, 2010). Critically examining the understanding of leadership skills though the perspective of professional in the work place assists when developing active leadership skills. Colwell discusses that listening is an undervalued skill that leaders forget about.
Active leadership skills are very important however active listening confirms that the message is truly transmitted strengthening the total leadership concept. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. There are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define leadership (Stogdill, 1974). Therefore, it is very difficult to understand what leadership actually is. According to John Sculley leadership revolves around vision and ideas and has to do more with inspiring people towards direction and goal. A leader is a person capable of inspiring other people to do things without sitting on top of them with a checklist. Precisely, leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a desired goal (Northouse, 2012). Distinguishing between leaders and non-leaders is hard as there exists no clear understanding of what differentiates leaders from non-leaders. Leadership and authority are constructed socially by superiors and subordinates, followers and peers.

Furthermore, actively listening to others improves a leaders ability to effectively manage team conflict and improve group dynamics. By listening to the team and understanding the issues that are occurring, a leader can provide control and guidance to the team through effective conflict resolution skills and in turn attain a more productive and cohesive team. Group dynamics continue to improve when utilizing great listening skills as a leader because team members become more engaged and talkative as they air out any internal information. Presently, most organizations emphasize extremely about leadership in organizations. Leadership means that ability, capability, and skills of leader to guide members of organizations to success or achieve objectives and destination. Leadership studies are interesting in several organizations. According to Walters (2009), “Leadership has been an intriguing and important part of human interactions for as long as people have lived and worked together in groups” (P.1). Some organizations have studied about leadership for long times to know what elements and significant factors of leadership is. Those elements will help leaders to have ability, capability, and skills to suggest members of organizations or being leaders efficiently.
“Leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their mutual purposes” (Rost, 1931). But in today’s time, the styles of leadership are changed every time a new technology is invented or discovered so there is lack of persistency. The only thing which manages to stay constant is the principles of carrying out business activities. There are philosophies and ideologies on leadership which can be used in any time period as they are mostly a reflection of the principles of leadership. Theorists and authors like Hobbes (1679), Lewin (1947) and Aristotle (384–322 B.C.), in their time have produced enough material which can be put into use by modern day leaders and managers. Philosophers like Aristotle, who was known to be one of the most business-oriented and practical philosopher of his time, his work is still used by businesses today because of their relevance as he is interested in defining principles in terms of the ethics of leadership (Santa Clara University). In the essay I have tried to show how leadership has adapted to the changes around them and compared to the past and what circumstances caused need to change it. As a layman, anyone would think that the principles centuries ago will be very different to what we follow now but after studying on Hobbes, Lewin and Aristotle it has made a big impact on my way of thinking because the work produced by them still has more relevance compared to some of the work produced now. I have tried to explain the evolvement of leadership through three aspects which are psychology, sociology and philosophy.
Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
