Academic Probation: Policies, Procedures and Programs
Introduction: Community colleges in the US offer education to a vast number of students. However not all students complete the course, due to a multitude of reasons. Some of these students are those put on academic probation because they are unable to meet the minimum academic standards of the college. It is evident that many students would need better academic planning as well as supplemental instructions to help them achieve their goals. As per Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce projections, by 2018, the US will need 22 million new college graduates and 4.7 million new workers who have post secondary certificates (Community Colleges Issues Brief, 2010, p.6). …show more content…

Increasing globalization has led to a world where economic and social changes are constantly occurring and there is need to bring higher education to many more students than is happening currently Dr Jill Biden pointed out that though students and programs are different in different community colleges, the goal of acquiring quality education and job training is the same. Some of the focus areas discussed were (i)providing affordable education in community colleges by facilitating first two years of study of a baccalaureate degree and allowing smooth transfer through simultaneous admission in community college and university as well as transparency about fees and costs and provision for internships; (ii) increasing completion rates by providing strong student support, collaboration with industry, accelerated learning, remedial education and credit for any course done before; (iii) streamlining the process of financial aid to cover more students- apart from Pell Grants, other federal aid, emergency grants, extension of American Opportunity tax credit, public and private sources can be considered; (iv) Community colleges in the 21st century …show more content…

“A student’s entire academic future may depend on whether the next semester is academically above standards” (Russell, 1981, p. 56). Nonacademic support also has good effect on student outcomes. They include development of social relationships within the campus, i.e. with instructors and peers; increasing feasibility for college life by providing support to those with financial woes, family responsibilities, work issues, etc; providing clarity to students regarding academic goals which should be linked to career goals so that the student is committed towards completing his/her course and making the students ready for college by providing them information about facets of college life, including support and teaching them time management skills (Scrivener, et al, COMMUNITY COLLEGE RESEARCH CENTER / TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, 2013).Automatic Reinstatement- the College may allow students to drop one semester and then the student is automatically readmitted (Russell, 1981, p.64)
Commitment to learning- a student who is committed to acquiring knowledge and using it will fare much better than a student who is indifferent or who is negative in their views. A student on probation who shows no signs of improvement will get dismissed or suspended thus wasting valuable
