As we all know, to succeed in school, college, or any other form of education results from a student’s complete understanding and effort of the material. According to Katz, academic integrity is defined as following a code of moral values, prizing, honesty and fairness in all aspects of academic life – classes, assignments, tests, papers, projects, and relationships with students and faculty (2009, p. 82) It is the foundation for responsible conduct of a student’s educational life. Positive value actions that define academic integrity are as follows: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility (Katz, 2009). Although students may not be completely aware of what constitutes cheating and breaking the value of academic integrity, they still allow themselves to become penalized because of cheating for these top three reasons: heavy workload, pressure to keep grade/GPA high, and lack of understanding/knowledge. I came up with the topic, “top reasons that college students cheat” by exploring the ins and outs of what academic integrity really means and why it remains so important to one’s educational schooling. Cheating not only in college, but any other year of schooling is an impulsive act and a very serious matter in relation to academic honesty. It has the ability to ruin one’s college career, which is the reason why I feel as though it is so risky. In most colleges around the world, students pay no attention to the academic integrity code or honor code for the school that they go to. Along with that, their assignments result as cheating work. As a college student, there are usually more than just one or two classes to keep up with.
Trying to complete more than one or two assignments in a day can be somewhat of an issue. Some students, including myself, do run into this issue and it can be very difficult to manage. Where time management comes into play, student’s (especially freshman) skills may not be up to par so they automatically go to breaking that academic integrity rule. Once they feel as though they can’t do it, they “cheat,” by getting the answers for the assignment from someone else, copying everything from someone else’s work, etc. Cheating happens most in the occasion where the student is involved in sports as well. Loschiavo (2015) found, “College work is challenging, and some students underestimate how long it will take them. When they run out of time, they panic and take a shortcut” (para. 21). Just as with a student who receives poor grades participates in the act of cheating, a student who gets excellent grades will cheat as well. When it comes down to GPA and grades, of course students are determined to keep them high and acceptable. Some students are pressured to keep their grades up or just get good grades period so they depend on cheating. One way is that they have no knowledge or understanding on the material that was taught either because they didn’t pay attention or just didn’t understand it. In this situation, they definitely will go straight to cheating because they have no other option. When writing a paper, students also may be confused on how to properly cite sources that they have used within their essay. In this matter, it is still considered as cheating, or in other terms, plagiarism, because it is stealing another person’s words and using it like it is your own. If a teacher is unfamiliar with current advancements in the digital world, it is possible that they will miss the most obvious of cheaters. Because the student is never punished or caught, they assume the teacher does not consider it cheating. In some cases, schools are responsible for the rise in cheating because of the way curriculum is presented. In an article written by the Atlantic, a teacher received an anonymous letter from a successful college student stating that he had cheated all throughout high school. He told the author he cheated “because the grade [he]would have otherwise been given was not reflective of [his] true learning” (Lahey). In other words, he felt the teachers were giving him exams that were not accurate representations of the material he had learned. If students are giving themselves excuses for their cheating, that feeling of guilt will subside, and they will not view the action as wrong. Many think they are not at fault if they do not get caught or because they are just trying to keep up with their classmates who are cheating as well. Don McCabe (2010) conducted a survey among 24,000 high school students at 70 high schools in the United States. 64% Of students admitted to cheating on a test, 58% admitted to plagiarism and 95% participated in some form of cheating. For college students, 70% of students, report to some form of cheating.

Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. In this ted talk, Dan Ariely mentioned two common reasons for his argument. According to Dan Ariely, people tend to cheat if they justify their reason to do so, or when they are surrounded by people who also cheat. And also to gain benefit in a test students can tend to cheat.
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
Overachieving students commit countless amounts of hours towards studying for tests or completing assignments. Students feel that with the substantial amount of dedication they put towards their success, they should be rewarded with the desired outcome—good grades. In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Moreover, institutions of higher learning should deal with all reported cases of academic dishonestly severely to deter others. In addition, a culture of academic integrity should be promoted. Without academic integrity, learning can never be assured. Honesty is not fixated, and changes by situation. Everyone should strive for academic honesty or integrity. By trying your hardest and receiving what you deserve, you will go farther than anyone else in life.
Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
