Academic integrity in undergraduate education is in danger due to the many counts of dishonest acts in the institution, and in the workplace. Many undergraduate institutions have the problem of academic integrity being enforced, due to grades being used to measure the potential of future employees by employers (Sims, 1993). Because of the obstacle of grades, and evaluation measures produced by the institution give few places for grades to improve, students will perform dishonest acts to obtain the highest grades so as to obtain their job. Therefore, institutions need to instill the fact that “dishonesty is not an acceptable alternative” in reaching for the “good life” (Sims, 1993). Institutions need to provide more measures for students to
improve their grades like weekly quizzes or participation marks, or provide some guidance in preparation for the major evaluations like guidelines or weekly review of previous content. By giving students these possibilities, rates of dishonest acts lower, and the forming of a new mentality about having more possible ways to reach the top. In conclusion, academic integrity may be in danger of losing importance, but with some adjustments to the policy, it will retain importance for the present generation and the future generations.
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
Academic dishonesty is one of the largest issues in American Universities. “A Question of Honor” by William Chace, a faculty of many prestigious American universities, published in Ethics in Higher Education, is an informative article about academic dishonesty. Chace believes that academic dishonesty is one of many factors that are creating financial, credible, and loyalty issues among American Universities. Chace appeals to the readers logos with reputable sources, citing facts; pathos by acknowledging that he agrees with his audience, college students; and a point of view building his emotional appeal.
When discussing integrity and ethics regarding law enforcement it is difficult to just narrow down to one element representative thereof. The first item of importance referring to integrity is, to be honest, and transparent in everything that you do so that the public can see you, as a community representative, are trying to foster good working community relations and that you as a leader will not stand for any misconduct. Recently here in Nashville, Tennessee (Alund & Sawyer, 2017) we were faced with an officer involved shooting of a suspect who evaded, possessed a loaded weapon, and fought up until the point the officer felt an immense fear for his safety and the safety of the community so unfortunately he was left with no alternative. All the above examples are reflective of a concept called academic integrity. The two questions to be discussed are what are the meaning of ‘Academic Integrity’? What is the important of ‘Academic Integrity’ in assignment completed by undergraduate students?
Academic integrity holds a great deal of weight. This includes honesty in the work produced, as well as being able to accomplish the work. Responsibility in addition plays important factor into integrity. I see responsibility as owning up to what has to be done and getting done. If I have an assignment due, I need to have that obligation completed by the set due date. Trust also helps with this. As a freshman, I have to trust that my professors will give the right amount of time to do assignments, and in return I must do the work I’m capable of.
Modern students face many pressures for academic success. They are often unwilling to disappoint their parents or spouses. Some fear that not cheating will weaken a student’s ability to compete with their peers. They rationalize their unethical behavior, unwilling to accept a poor grade, consequently justifying cheating as the only means to that end.
In conclusion, the issue of academic integrity does not only affect an individual, but also an institution. Therefore, it is the duty of students and schools to ensure that ethical principles are upheld all the time. Moreover, institutions of higher learning should deal with all reported cases of academic dishonestly severely to deter others. In addition, a culture of academic integrity should be promoted. As students of high school and college, and even in the professional world, we are asked to research and write on subjects that are seen to be important. The research that we are asked to do, has been done many times in the past, which means people are bound to use others’ ideas and words with no recognition, sometimes without even knowing it. This leads to plagiarism, which is something many people have heard of, but never learned the true definition and the harm it can create. Schools and society need to be more proactive in explaining what plagiarism is, how to write correctly in order to prevent it, and teach the consequences plagiarism has.
Without academic integrity, learning can never be assured. Honesty is not fixated, and changes by situation. Everyone should strive for academic honesty or integrity. By trying your hardest and receiving what you deserve, you will go farther than anyone else in life.
Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.

We cannot let such actions continue; if educators continue to tolerate cheating, our world may transition into one socially, economically, and politically operated by dishonest individuals. Society’s obsession with creating good academic performers has led to the subsequent creation of deceitful children and the possibility of a fraudulent
