What is cheating? Cheating is the dishonesty of an individual for their personal advantage. Base on various studies conducted cheating is getting worse among students. Students are cheating to get higher grades so that they look smart. Students are even cheating their way into colleges and universities. This is becoming a major problem and it does not only affect students but school administrators, employers and even generations to come. Don McCabe (2010) conducted a survey among 24,000 high school students at 70 high schools in the United States. 64% Of students admitted to cheating on a test, 58% admitted to plagiarism and 95% participated in some form of cheating. Visual, reading and writing, and kinesthetic, etc. are various type of learners in our schools today. But, the educational system only focuses on the reading and writing learners, this is absurd. This is a contribution to the increasing numbers of students cheating. A true education is not only learned from books and taking a test. The modern day educational system is unfair; it also sacrifices the abilities of each student. This is allowing students to think that they are stupid, useless and incompetent. But it is the inflexibility of our teachers, they are not flexible enough to teach other types of learners and therefore only focuses on the reading and writing learners. But, no two brains are the same, each student has different strength, abilities, dreams; yet, everyone is being taught the same. Modern day schooling claim to prepare students for the future, but seems more as competing for an ‘A’, instead of grasping the concept being taught. Some students are bombarded with assignments and tests which are sometimes due in short period of times. I have recently interviewed a friend of mines, second-year medical students at the University of West Indies Mona, who said the workload is heavy but manageable once you organize yourself properly. But of course, this is his opinion, to others, it may not be that easy. We asked him, “Have you ever cheated?” To this day, the answer is yet to come. I decided to interview a family member this time, a Lawyer, who graduated from two prestigious universities, Stanford University and Harvard University. She remembered the workload she faced while studying, the stress it brought. She admitted to cheating on two tests in her university life and regret that she ever did. She further went on and said cheating is a choice, no matter the situation you should work hard and accept the grade you get because that is what you worked for. With the workload being too heavy, some students would only work towards the requirement needed to pass the class other that trying to completely understand the lesson being taught. In addition, students would not work as efficiently as they should, and this will lead to students cheating just to pass the
That stomach churning feeling of guilt for many seems to appear as a small price to pay when completing an act of academic dishonesty. Colleen Wenke wrote an essay on cheating eighteen years ago called “Too Much Pressure”. In the past fifty years, the number of students who admit to cheating has increased fifty to seventy percent(Gaffe). Many people wonder what leads the students to make this unjust decision. Today, the reason for a rise in cheaters is because of how easy it has become, leading many students to the false conclusion that they aren’t breaking any rules; It is simply viewed as a shortcut to success in the classroom and beyond.
Situations of cheating have seemed to become more and more commonplace when the student is bored by the subject material, poor teaching and or feels they have no use for the knowledge. Kohn even states in his article, “cheating is more common when students experience the academic tasks they’ve been given as boring, irrelevant, or overwhelming.” This infers that if a student were attending a school interested in learning about art, the student maybe more inclined to cheat in a business accounting class due to the fact the student would find the subject material irrelevant to them and their future. Students seem to be less inclined to cheat and it “is relatively rare in classrooms where the learning is genuinely engaging and meaningful to students and where a commitment to exploring significant ideas hasn’t been eclipsed by a single-minded emphasis on “rigor”” (Kohn). To simplify everything mentioned above; students are inclined to cheat in school when they are disinterested in the subject material and or are overwhelmed by in assignment or finally the result in a poor teacher. This quote is important because it proves how everyone has cheated once. In many cases it is true, people often cheat on tests or even on their diet. Not everyone can live up to their expectations. Some may justify it, others proudly proclaim it, and others will try denying their cheating vigorously. Most people consider cheating as a bad and unwise action. In this novel, it gave two examples of cheaters, school teachers and sumo wrestlers. It shows how both authors can take two different people and still find something similar with both of them, like cheating.
From plagiarism to dishonesty, many high school teenagers cheat just to get a good grade in a class or they simply are bad at that particular subject. They cheat on tests, quizzes, and even on big projects. No matter the circumstance, if you are ever to be caught, you should be served with the toughest of consequences. You should not be trusted. You should have any second chances. After all, even if you don’t get caught for cheating, you are not learning anything the class has to offer.
There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating. Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled “A Whole Lot of Cheatin’ Going On.”

Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of the student.
Cheating is defined as to "deceive by trickery" or "to act dishonestly, practicing fraud." (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 1993). A recent survey has shown an overwhelming majority of students have cheated. They, however, have justified their actions and do not believe that is a “big deal” (Cheating is a Personal Foul, 1999).
Cheating on academic work is a serious issue that most students admit to doing at some point in their academic career. Elite students are surprisingly the culprits of cheating, but hide it well. (Romm, para 5) Cheating is such a large issue that “70% of students from a sample of 1,800 from nine campuses said they had cheated at least once during their college careers.” (Schneider, para 9) Students cheat on academic work because of different, ongoing pressures in their lives. Understanding the student’s motives and pressures are essential to preventing cheating from occurring in the future. Students cheat for different reasons specific to them regarding their priorities, pressures and because of how easy it has become. Even though eliminating cheating will not happen, there are actions that educational professionals can and should take to prevent most of it from happening so often. Therefor cheating problems are minimized and have a positive impact on the student’s education and understanding of concepts.
Everyone has cheated on something at some point in their life, whether it is in a game, on a test, or in a relationship, everyone has done it. Cheating is anything that involves breaking a rule, or getting an unfair advantage. Schools are one of the most popular places people cheat. Many people down play cheating and use excuses like, “He shouldn’t have let me see his paper,” or, “I am just using my resources wisely.” But, what causes people to cheat? Students cheat in school because of laziness, high standards or pressure to do well, and misunderstanding.
From a young age we are taught the differences between right and wrong, but as we get older the line between moral and immoral is often blurred. Things that were once thought of as unacceptable are now perfectly fine in our minds. Have you ever seen anyone cheat on an assignment or exam? Do you know anyone that’s been expelled from school for cheating? What if it was discovered that a U.S. senator plagiarized his college thesis paper? Imagine if it got out that one of the most respected universities in the U.S. was involved in a huge fraud scandal that involved thousands of students. Academic cheating is a terrible offense because it is unethical, self-degrading, and can be detrimental to the learning environment.
All over the world people are being accused of cheating in sports, politics, and even relationships, but is cheating really that bad? Some people think that cheating is okay in some cases. I don’t agree with this, as cheating can get you in big trouble if you are caught. It’s really a dishonest way to get to your goal. People should learn that goals set high are accomplished by hard work and persistence.
The question of whether cheating is right or wrong may seem like a silly one, but just about everyone will agree that cheating is indeed wrong. With today’s technology giving us information and breaking news with the swipe of a finger, it seems as though cheating has even become more common; but is it ever acceptable? I would say no. Most of us feel the temptation to cheat at some point in life, but I view cheating as the easy way out for those who don’t have the drive to grow and learn honestly. Whether cheating is done in the workplace, sports, or academically; those who cheat are giving themselves an unfair advantage over those who accomplish the same goals honestly. There is never a good reason to lie. I disagree because I would lie in order to save my friend’s feelings. For example, when a friend of mine worked on a project and asked me, “is it good?” I lied and told her it was.
