Part I: Prior to the start, January 31, 2015
For this assignment, I chose to abstain from the use of profanity. I chose to give up profanity because it is something that I know will be difficult for me. I also chose this particular activity to give up because I associate my use of profanity with a very hard time in my life. Since that time, I have worked very diligently to be a better person and to erase the aspects of the person that I used to be. By giving up the use of profanity, I will be able to start erasing another aspect of that person that I did not like very much. One reason why abstaining from the use of profanity will be so difficult for me is because of how long I have been using profanity. I started using profanity at a fairly young age, probably 5th or 6th grade, and since then I use profanity every day, multiple times a day. I think I started using profanity because in the 6th grade my mother had a stroke and during that time I felt like no one was listening to me. My family was very wrapped up in my mom’s care and I felt like I was being forgotten about. I remember one day in class I used profanity in front of the whole class and my teacher stopped what she was doing and addressed my profanity use in front of everyone. At that moment, I realized that by using profanity I could get attention. In the past, I have tried to abstain from profanity; however, it has never lasted very long. I remember one time I was able to abstain from profanity for about a week. However, once I started using profanity again, I realized that trying to stop was a lost cause.

I have already previously spoken about adding my boyfriend to the assignment as an additional support. This will be beneficial because he will be able to congratulate me when I have a “profanity free day” and encourage me when I mess up (because I’m sure I will). Furthermore, my roommate is also in this class and will be participating in this assignment so we will have each other for support. Another support system that I will have is my grandparents. My grandmother has been telling me for years that my “potty mouth” is not lady like. Therefore, although I do not talk to my grandmother on a daily basis and she does not even live in Virginia, the fact that I know my grandmother really wants me to quite using profanity will keep me motivated through these 28 days.
Mary Sherry makes some great points in her essay about the "F" word. Sherry starts out by giving us a great argument about the failure of children in schools. Sherry’s thesis was “Tens of thousands of 18-year-olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas.” Sherry uses the idioms like, “Meaningless diplomas” and “Their validity will be questioned”. This gives us as the reader evidence that an argument exists.
Swearing has the ability to get someone in a whole load of trouble at the dinner table with their mother but could also be their choice of words when they accidently stub their toe on the coffee table in the living room. Natalie Angier discusses this controversial topic of words that shouldn’t be said in her article feature in The New York Times, “Almost Before We Spoke, We Swore”. Provoked by a recently proposed bill to increase fines for using swear words on television, Angier analyzes not only the impact of swearing, but also where the desire to speak obscene words comes from. Without delay, I begin my in-depth look into the requirements of this study and what was expected of me, as an English 111 student. When many individuals think of a dangerous word their minds automatically think of the words that they chose to omit when in the presence of children or words that are thought instead of spoken in formal places, but what about the words that sit along the fine line between appropriate and inappropriate? For example, the term redneck has a different meaning to those inside community versus that of those outside. This word is the most dangerous because it is looked down upon and praised at the same time. The term redneck should be socially acceptable in everyday language, because those who it describes take pride using it to describe themselves.

When we were first given this assignment I had not put much consideration into it. I thought we were to ask a couple of questions, it would all work itself out and I would be done. But this was not the case. The thought and reflection put into interview questions really surprised me. There was far more factors other than the questions you were asking, because you were also dealing with people, people who are giving you there free time, their attention and opening themselves up to you a stranger, so there were far more responsibilities then what were initially at hand.
In the article, "You Can't Say That," the author Diane Ravitch talks about how certain words are deleted from books or not shown in films because they could offend certain groups. In the article, Ravitch argues that although it may seem like we live in a world where anything goes, the truth is, that's not true. Diane does research and gathers a list of more than five hundred words that regularly get deleted from textbooks and tests. Some of the words include cowboy, brotherhood, yacht, and primitive. Personally I believe that the censoring of words these days is somewhat extreme. I understand that certain groups could be offended by such words but why should everyone else not get the original words the author is trying to write because of that.
