This spring I was enrolled in the course entitled Practicum I. This program allowed students to observe and document how working professionals perform their job responsibilities. After speaking with Lieutenant Diamond, I decided to intern with the Albany State University Police Department. While working closely with the officers, I was assigned to different departments on campus. This included the main office, dispatch, and security detail. After signing my contract with Lieutenant Diamond I first began working in the main office with Ms. Rhonda Knighton. While working under Ms. Knighton, I was taught how to interact with the students, as well as faculty when providing different services. A few examples of the services that the ASU Police Department offer includes but is not limited to parking decals, forms to appeal a ticket, visitors parking, and temporary parking. While I was attentive to Ms. Knighton, I also make sure to take a close look at how all the employees of the ASU Police Department interact with the public and vice versa. …show more content…
Another department that I worked in was dispatch.
While working closely with dispatch officers I was taught the importance of documentation. While learning this I was taught how to properly document incidents, and how to properly record the movements of officers. I was also assigned to ride with officers who were on duty. These officers were extremely willing to show me their daily responsibilities, as well as explain the rules and regulations that officers follow daily. These officers also explained the in-depth knowledge of arrest procedures, how to read radars and estimate the speed of the vehicle. Some officers even explain the different conflict resolution skills they used when encountering difficult students. Other officers explained what the Albany State University Police Department Mission Statement was and what it means to
them. Everyone working in this department is extremely friendly and more than willing to work with students who may come across some problems. While the staff may seem friendly, they do take their oath to protect and service very seriously. While discussing some of the tasks as well as issues that officers may encounter, Lieutenant Diamond made sure to reiterate the importance of confidentiality. While my time here has been short, I have learned different task as well as seen how psychology can be used in this career. Overall, my experience with the ASU Police Department was extremely exciting. I particularly liked how each officer that I encountered was more than willing to explain their duties and responsibilities to me. I can see how officers incorporate psychology into their work. After working closely with the department, I can see how the different fields of psychology are being incorporated into the workplace. My intern covers two different fields of psychology. The first field is Psychologists in Public Service, which is then divided into separate categories. The category that best explains the work of the police is called Police and Public Safety. The next field used is called American Psychology-Law Society, which includes forensic psychology, which police officers use to perform their jobs.

The influence of higher education on police officer habits would surprise many according to Matthew D. Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”. Although a degree is required for some agencies and considered ideal for any person looking to join the law enforcement field, surveys show otherwise says Bostrom. According to a study conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota there were more on-duty vehicle collisions by officers with formal education beyond high school than those who only obtained a high school diploma. The article also shows figures indicating more disciplinary actions towards officers with college degrees and a significant difference in those of officers with high school diplomas only. The measurements of work habits shown indicate that perhaps a college degree in general is not necessary to be an effective police officer. Traffic Officer James Dunn of the California Highway Patrol in an interview said, “a degree can be beneficial, but some people are very eloquent and knowledgeable even without attending college-a person can learn the specific duties of any job, but college does not teach you the responsibilities of being a police officer. You learn that by hands-on training”. Although a degree is helpful, Officer Dunn admits that he has been very successful in the law
For my Internship, I was lucky enough to do it with South Elgin Police department, which is located on ten north water street in South Elgin Illinois, 60177. There are about thirty members that work for the South Elgin Police Department. South Elgin Police department is a public safety service that is for the community of South Elgin. Their mission is to exist to enhance the quality of life for the South Elgin Community that supports core values. Such as integrity, reputation, family, faith, progressive and compassion for other people. This means that all of the values go with the way that Police Officer should handle them self and how everyone in society should act around each other on a daily basis. South Elgin Police Department has four detectives which include a sergeant that see over in ingestions deviation. They also have one crime prevention officer, who force on the community relationship between the department and the people of south Elgin. They also have one civilian public aid Officer who goes around the community tracking down vehicles that are abandoned and helps the department maintain cars. They also a k-9 unit to help out with their daily actives when needed. South Elgin also has to two civilians that work in the record department . They also have four sergeants for every shift. Perceptions of what constitutes a qualified police officer have been crafted as a result of numerous television shows and movies. They are often portrayed as heroic, invincible, and possessors of brute strength. While some of these physical attributes are in fact expected and required of police officers, they are not the only ones and at times, may come secondary to alternative methods, such as the use of strong communication and critical thinking skills. Policing has changed immensely since the days of resolving issues with a night stick. There is a desire for today’s police officers to possess the educational capacity to develop and implement community policing initiatives. I participated in a police ride-along with the Fairfax County Police Department on October 30th. I chose the Fair Oaks District Station for the ride since my home falls within that particular district’s boundaries. At 8 p.m., I was introduced to Officer Crutchman; the police officer I would be accompanying for the night. We headed out after a brief overview of some safety rules and expectations. Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
In the past eight years as a police officer for the City of South Salt Lake, I have found that personal growth and achievement in my career have been based on certain past experiences. Such experiences have molded what my personality is today. I have found that in order to be triumphant in my personal and professional goals, it has been necessary for me to reflect not only on my strides, but also my mistakes.
