A White Heron “A White Heron” by Sarah Orne Jewett is a captivating short story that revolves around a young girl named Sylvia and her love for nature. Her best friend is a dairy cow who travels with her. She loves all types of nature and everything about the animals who live in it. She loves her farm, and wonders if “she never had been alive at all before she came to live at the farm” (Jewett). She met a very handsome hunter on her path one day. He wants to hunt the rare and beautiful white Heron. He states, “I can’t think of anything I should like so much as to find that heron’s nest (Jewett)”. Young gray-eyed Sylvia had never felt love before this. She is young and rarely has connections with older men. She is happy to have interactions with another person, the fact he hunts birds seems to pass her mind. Sylvia is portrayed as an innocent girl who does not want nature to be hurt or killed. Her appreciations grew stronger for this man each minute. She looked at him with “loving admiration”. Instead of leading the way to the heron Sylvia stayed back. The heron became her friend. They share special moments like how they "watched the sea and morning together" (Jewett). Her respect for nature is brought back to the surface and love slides back further and further. Sylvia sees herself in this special bird. The bird is independent and mythical and she cannot seem to spill its “secret”.
