A Very Brief History of Cinematography

Ever since I was little, I have been around cameras, sets, and lights. Being a cinematographer, my dad was always working on a camera or using one to shoot something. I always found his job interesting and exciting, which led me to pick cinematography for this paper. I also love being able to be creative and come up with new ideas or different solutions, and cinematography would allow me to do this on a daily basis. Researching this career opened my eyes to the history, current technology, and future innovations that cinematography has. 1. History Cinematography is a relatively new job, with photography invented in the nineteenth century and major film studios popping up in the early 1900s. A French man by the name of Louis Daguerre is credited with the first uses of photography, beginning in the 1830s. Daguerre’s method took anywhere from five to forty minutes to develop a permanent image. In the 1840s, Josef M. Petzval, a Hungarian, was able to cut down on this time, as well as produce a clearer image. George Eastman was able to develop a “lightweight, inexpensive” (Digital History) camera, Kodak, and paper film wound on rollers (Digital History). The first examples of moving pictures were exhibited by British man Eadward Muybridge in 1878. Thomas Edison soon came into the rising motion picture scene, developing the Kinetoscope with W.K. Dickinson in 1889. This new contraption was a “peepshow device” (Digital History) that used a light to show moving film. Edison also acquired a patent for a moving film camera in 1893. One year later, Edison and Dickinson’s Kinetoscopes pop up in New York City arcades. Shortly after, French brothers August and Louis Lumiere came up with the projector in 1895.
