J M. Barrie's Peter Pan is a poignant tale about the magic of childhood. The main character, Peter Pan, is a magical boy who wishes never to fall into the banality of adulthood, but to have an adventure every moment and remain forever young. The play details Peter's relationship with a young girl, Wendy, who is on the cusp of young adulthood. Peter's gang, the Lost Boys, wish for a mother to read them stories. Peter goes and retrieves Wendy to be their new mother. Their adventures reveal much about the nature of childhood and Barrie's thoughts on the bittersweet necessity of growing up.
In order for Barrie to get his message on the importance of growing up across to the audience, he must first set himself up as an authority on adolescence and the child's mind. A fine example of how he establishes this can be seen in the description of Peter's natural habitat, Never Land. The beginning of Act II (47-50) explains the manner in which Never Land must be introduced to the audience. The description creates an air of mystery, awe, and expectation. At first the audience gets only a vague impression of the grandeur. The narrator explains "What you see is not the beasts themselves but only the shadows of them" (47). However, as the scene draws near, other details about the set and the characters becomes clear. Never Land is the physical realm of childhood; everything is bright and wondrous and new. Furthermore, everything is placed just so for the amusement of a child. The mermaids are preening for Peter's arrival and

At first, Peter Pan seems to be a playful children's story. With closer examination, one notices that the play not only entertains but teaches an important lesson. Do not squander your youth. At the same time, one must realize when it is time to let it go and to move on. By the end of the play, it is hard to envy Peter as much as pity him. He never touches reality. All others are allowed to experience both the magic of youth and the joy of growing up. Peter is never allowed to transition into adulthood. His life is incomplete. Though one cannot help feeling a yearning for one's own youth when Wendy's face is seen growing older. Peter should be pitied for being the only little boy who never grows up and truly gets to discover what it is like to have a family and not just pretend.

Peter and the Starcatcher, by Rick Elice, takes the audience on an adventurous journey through the sea and to a distant island were many different groups of people from different parts of the world are on the search for a trunk filled with treasure. Throughout the journey the audience gets to see a variety of characters that range from orphans to captains, pirates, natives, and even mermaids. The audience also witness confident, strong leaders who become heroes and create bonds of love and friendships towards the end of the show. I attended the Clarence Brown Theatre performance of Peter and the Starcatcher on September 16, 2017 and witness actor’s expressions of emotions and personalities through their movements. Some of the movements that stood out to me occurred in the characters of the boy, the pirates and the mermaids. Through the observations of their movements I got a chance to better understand those characters and their behaviors/wants.
Under the sea, in an idyllic and beautiful garden, stands a statue of a young man cut out of cold stone – for the Little Mermaid who knows nothing but the sea, the statue stands as an emblem of the mysterious over-world, a stimulus for imagination and sexual desire, an incentive for expansion of experience, and most predominately, an indication that something great and all-encompassing is missing from her existence. Traces of curiosity and a vague indication of the complexities of adult desires mark the child mermaid; in such a stage of development, the statue will suffice. However, as the Little Mermaid reaches puberty, the statue must allegorically come alive in order to parallel the manifestation of her new-found adult desires – the statue must become a prince in his world of adulthood above the sea. Thus, powered by an insistent and ambiguous longing for self-completion, the Little Mermaid embarks on a journey of self-discovery, and, to her ultimate misfortune, prematurely abandons her child-like self as sexual lust and the lust for an adult life takes hold of her.
Barrie presents Mr. Darling as the worker of the family, a proud businessman. He persistently demands respect and obedience from his wife, children, and Nana the dog. As well as this, he boasts to Wendy that Mrs. Darling not only loves him, but respects him. This outlook is linked to the stereotypical view of the male gender as the main source of income, with a resilient disposition and a necessity for order. When Mrs. Darling talks to him about Peter Pan, he dismisses her concerns, suggesting indifference and a lack of concern for others’ views.
Peter Pan has appeared in many adaptations, sequels, and prequels. Peter Pan first appeared in a section of The Little White Bird, a 1902 novel that was originally written for adults. In 1904, Peter Pan was turned into a play and since the play was so successful Barrie’s publishers, extracted chapters 13–18 of The Little White Bird and republished them in 1906 under a different title. This story was adapted and changed into a novel, was published in 1911 as Peter and Wendy, later the name changed to Peter Pan and Wendy, and then changed to Peter Pan, as we know it today. Growing up is a natural part of life. Everyone grows up. The loss of childish innocence and blind faith in what is said is one chief mark of growing up. Loss of innocence, however, presents itself in many forms, even to adults, and with it brings a greater understanding of the world at large. In literature, authors use the process to explore society and humanity. Through the characters’ loss of innocence, the authors of both To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice & Men discuss ideas of prejudice, family, and courage.
Peter Pan never wanted to grow up, for he always wanted to be a boy and have fun. On the other hand, the general argument made by author, Anne Sexton, in her poem, “The Fury of Overshoes,” is that childhood is most appreciated when a person must be independent. A university student finds that he can relate to the speaker. The high school student, still a child himself, will feel the same as the speaker in her youth. A college student and a high school student reading this poem would conclude this poem with different feelings.
In the famous story that we all were read as children, Mary Poppins, the author P.L. Travers depicts a story of an astonishing nanny who arrives at the Banks household to look after the four children, Michael, Jane, and the twins. Jane and Michael live pretty boring lives before Mary Poppins, the nanny, arrives. These two children are very critical thinkers, and it is apparent that they receive these traits from their parents, so because of this Poppins challenges their beliefs when she arrives. Through many adventures and the character of Poppins, Jane and Michael come to learn that there is not always an answer for all of their questions. To their displeasing, the nanny tells them that they have to use their imagination to come up with answers to all of their questions. Eventually, the children are able to discover their childhood, that seemed to be lost, once the nanny leaves. Throughout the book Poppins takes the children on journeys to help them discover what they are missing out on and help them regain that ability to make believe just as every other kid in the world does.
Instructor’s comment: This student’s essay performs the admirable trick of being both intensely personal and intelligently literary. While using children’s literature to reflect on what she lost in growing up, she shows in the grace of her language that she has gained something as well: an intelligent understanding of what in childhood is worth reclaiming. We all should make the effort to find our inner child
‘Some idea of a child or childhood motivates writers and determines both the form and content of what they write.’ -- Hunt The above statement is incomplete, as Hunt not only states that the writer has an idea of a child but in the concluding part, he states that the reader also has their own assumptions and perceptions of a child and childhood. Therefore, in order to consider Hunt’s statement, this essay will look at the different ideologies surrounding the concept of a child and childhood, the form and content in which writers inform the reader about their ideas of childhood concluding with what the selected set books state about childhood in particular gender. The set books used are Voices In The Park by Browne, Mortal Engines by Reeve and Little Women by Alcott to illustrate different formats, authorial craft and concepts about childhood. For clarity, the page numbers used in Voices In The Park are ordinal (1-30) starting at Voice 1.
...hen you reach the end the boy has taken a turn and instantly matures in the last sentence. Something like that doesn’t just happen in a matter of seconds. Therefore the readers gets the sense that the narrator is the boy all grown up. He is recollecting his epiphany within the story allowing the readers to realize themselves that the aspiration to live and dream continues throughout the rest of ones life. The narrator remembers this story as a transformation from innocence to knowledge. Imagination and reality clearly become two different things to the narrator; an awareness that everyone goes though at some point in their life. It may not be as dramatic as this story but it gradually happens and the innocence is no longer present.

The story is told by Pip, a grown man describing his experiences as a young common labouring boy in the early Victorian period. He sometimes tends to narrate the story as if through the eyes of an innocent child. The effect that has on the reader is that it brings out both a mature and young adventurous side in us, it also makes us feel sorry for Pip in a way, because of the way he was treated by his merciless sister. For example when Pip?s uncle Mr Pumblechuck tells Pip he has to go and entertain a woman he doesn?t know called Miss Haversham, his sister forces him to go even though he doesn?t want to with a threat. ?If Miss Haversham wants a boy to go and play there and of course he?s going, or I?ll work him?. The explanation for this is she never wanted Pip in the first place as he was dumped on her, so she was happy to get rid of him.
The change first starts when he meets Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter, Estella, Estella treats him as if he was a poor servant. Pip strives to change himself so that he could meet Estella’s standards and gain her approval. On one occasion, Pip showed his ambition, after he meets Estella; he becomes quickly obsessed with wanting to better himself. Pip said, “I knew I was common, and I wished I was not common.” Pip then begins to take extra lessons from his friend, Biddy; he would do anything to be less “common and course.” In addition, Pip has a simple dream of becoming a blacksmith, like his brother-in-law Joe, but after he is apprenticed by Miss Havisham. Pip became restless; he felt ashamed of his small house. So, when he receives new from Mr. Jaggers about his “great expectations” Pip jumps at the opportunity to be educated, rich, and socially accepted. Pip left his friend Joe, to better himself. Pip said, “I was lost in the mazes of my future fortune, and could not retrace the bypath we had trodden together.” As a gentleman, Pip’s ambitions cause him to be ungrateful to his friends, and his lavish way of life causes his friend Herbert to go into debt. Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations follows the maturing of main character Philip “Pip” Pirrip from a very young age until his adulthood. The novel starts with Pip being just six years old, alone on the marsh where he has an encounter that changes his whole life. What is notable about this early Pip is how he is shaped and manipulated by the ideologies of those around him, especially when it comes to social class. Dickens makes it very clear that Pip does not reach maturity until he frees himself from these notions that had been set upon him, and begins to see past the overt attributes associated with station.
