This assignment will be based on continual professional development and will aim to identify a learning need encountered in my previous clinical placement. Through reflecting on my previous placement, I have identified that my lack of knowledge and organisation skills have impacted on my confidence and ability to hand over to qualified nurses. Therefore, the learning need I have identified involves improving my confidence, knowledge and organisation skills, in communication handover with qualified nurses.
I will provide a detailed critical analysis of the learning need and will reflect on the impact of the learning need on my professional development using the Johns model of structured reflection (Johns, 1995). I will then critically reflect and analyse how I met this practical learning need and how the change in practice relates to current, evidence based practice. I will continuously follow the Post-registration Education and Practice guidelines set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2011) and will also work in accordance with the NMC (2008) Code

Regrettably I left out vital information during the handover, causing my mentor to intervene and relay this information to the nurse. I noticed my mentor and the nurse looked quite disappointed in the poor attempt I had made at handing over, especially when the patient questioned my ability to practice as a student nurse. Through the utilisation of the accompanying text, I aim to discuss and reflect upon one person’s care, to which I have had previous involvement. Using the perspectives set out by Chapelhow et al (2005), I aim to gain a broader outlook on what is expected of me as a Student Nurse. Chapelhow et al (2005) has identified six skills that they feel are required of every Health Care Practitioner. These skills are defined as ‘enablers’ as they are fundamental skills that provide the means for expert professional practice (Chapelhow et al 2005). Although there are six skills outlined, I will only be using two of them to analyse the care I provided. I have chosen to use communication and risk management as my two enablers.

During my clinical placement at Fremantle hospital, I ensured that I read and understood all policies and procedures of hospital. I also got myself familiarized with infection control and risk and safety guidelines so that I could follow them properly in need. I also come to know the importance of wearing personal protective clothing (PPE) in relation to different disease conditions. I also come to know that as a nursing student I am not allowed to check or administered schedule 4 and schedule 8 drugs and not even could hold the keys for locked cupboard. During my first week, I come across a patient who was on vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) control precautions with episode of stroke and left sided weakness. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate task when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessay. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
In conclusion, I believe that polarization exists in the United States. I agree with many of the points that Wilson brings up in his article, as states previously. The gap between liberals and conservatives is getting wider and wider, leaving nowhere for those with moderate views to be in the mix. Polarization is detrimental to our two party dominated republic, and it is difficult to determine what may fix our political system.
Political inactivity on the part of young Americans stems from one fundamental source -- a general cynicism of the American political process. This disdain for politics is further perpetuated by a lack of voter education and a needlessly archaic voting procedure that creates barriers to voting where they need not exist. While many of these existing problems can be rectified with relative ease through the implementation of programs such as Internet voting and better voter education, such programs create only a partial solution.
The relationship between the person seeking help and the nurse/counsellor should be appropriate for producing therapeutic change, to ensure that the patient maximizes from the therapeutic relationship. The health care provider should ensure that they communicate effectively to the patient/client. The skills explained in the above essay are the relevant skills that nurses in the contemporary hospital environment should adhere to and respect.
The Department of Health preceptorship framework (2010, P11.) describes preceptorship as “A period of structured transition for the newly registered practitioner during which he or she will be supported by a preceptor, to develop their confidence as an autonomous professional”. The nursing and midwifery council (NMC) define the role of a preceptor as “providing support and guidance enabling ‘new registrants’ to make the transition from student to accountable practitioner”, suggesting that a period of preceptorship should be offered at registration. Locally, the Welsh Government (2009) supported this in their post registration career framework.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
