A Case Analysis of Calyx and Corolla
This analysis focuses on the case study of Calyx & Corolla, a mail order flower company.
Calyx & Corolla is a relatively new company that utilizes a different distribution channel than conventional companies for fresh flowers. Calyx & Corolla mails flowers direct from the growers to the customers via Federal Express and eliminates the middleman (Appendix A). This permits Calyx & Corolla to provide fresher, longer-lasting flowers to consumers. The management of Calyx & Corolla is contemplating a change in their long-term business strategy as they examine their ability to compete with more traditional outlets such as retail flower shops and wire services like FTD. Ruth Owades, the founder of Calyx & Corolla, has hired Marketing Consultants (MarCo) to assess the strengths and weaknesses of her business and make recommendations on how her company can fully develop their mail order concept.
Background:
Calyx & Corolla is a small mail order flower company that was founded in 1988 by Ruth
Owades. Ms. Owades secured $2 million in capital from approximately 18 different investors in order to launch the company. By 1991, Calyx & Corolla exceeded $10 million in annual sales and Owades and her associates were reassessing the firm's long-term growth strategy (Wylie and Salmon, 1991). Up to this point, Calyx & Corolla was primarily a mail order company, but management is now considering expanding their market and is unsure of how they should proceed. Recently, a well-financed venture capital-backed start-up failed and Calyx & Corolla acquired some of its assets. Another unproven competitor recently entered the market, financed by a large Japanese conglomerate.
The company's success is primarily due to a few key employees. Ruth Owades plays a
major part in the selection and pricing of flowers and other merchandise that appears in the catalog. Fran Wilson, the vice president of operations, is responsible for customer orders and service, day-to-day communications with growers, systems development, and finance. Ann Hayes Lee is responsible for merchandise development and catalog creation and production. She is also responsible for non-direct mail initiatives that are aimed at accelerating the growth of the business. Calyx & Corolla espouses the values and creativity of these individuals and their employees. Taking into consi...

Calyx & Corolla was a new entrant into the $8 billion flower industry in the United States in 1991. Through the use of overnight air freight (Fed Ex), information technology, an 800 number, and a catalog, Calyx & Corolla was able to bypass three layers of distribution and provide fresh flowers directly from growers to consumers. As a result of their efficient distribution system, Calyx and Corolla changed the way flowers were distributed to consumers.
Tesco's general development and ROI hint at no halting: In the UK, Tesco's late 2002 financing into West-midlands based comfort store bunch T&s was charged as the most forceful move into the area advertise by an enormous name store as such. The arrangement has transformed Tesco into the nation's second greatest accommodation store network after the Co-agent Group, and the organization likewise plans to open up 59 new stores in the UK not long from now. Tesco has developed its non-sustenance division to the degree that its wages now add up to 23% of aggregate gathering income. Tesco's worldwide business part is developing consistently, and is anticipated to include/give almost a quarter of gathering benefits throughout the following five years. On the off chance that land spread keeps on growwing, this will guarantee Tesco's proceeded (identified with a huge territory) quality.

Washington gives details about the changes that he wants to see in the south and feels that the white man is the neighbor of the black man. He also feels that even though the white man should help, blacks should learn to fend for themselves. Washington says that, “the Negro is given a man’s chance in the commercial world”. What Washington is saying is that the Negro basically has the same chance as the white man to make a living for himself, when this was not the reality during his generation. In Washington’s letter he tries to convince the president that blacks have given whites no reason to mistreat or mistrust, or abuse them. The point of his letter was to bring unity within the south between whites and blacks. Washington concludes the letter by stressing, “It is important and right that all privileges of the law be ours, but it is vastly more important that we be prepared for the exercise of these privileges”. Washington’s views on integration/segregation and African American freedom are based on the unity of both races and the Negro compromising for the white man to be
In his autobiography, Up From Slavery, Washington talks about the ways that slavery hurt not only the slave, but also the slavemaster. He talks about the relationship of familiarity that existed between the slaves on the plantation and their masters. In all his writing, he uses unifying language that shows empathy to both sides and seeks to come to a peaceful agreement between the two. For example, in his “Atlanta Compromise” speech, Washington tells African Americans that a good way to begin to be accepted into society is, “making friends with the Southern white man, who is your next-door neighbor,” Washington valued economic welfare for blacks first and foremost; and he viewed achieving it as the best way to achieve equality. In his speech he told people to, “Cast it down in agriculture, mechanics, in commerce, in domestic service… No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.,” He told his fellow black men that working a low-class job should not be scorned or frowned upon, but viewed as a starting place from which to grow. His approach was never filled with the righteous indignation that characterized other civil rights figures, such as Dubois himself. He sought to make honest
During the last few years, Harry Davis Industries has been too constrained by the high cost of capital to make many capital investments. Recently, though, capital costs have been declining, and the company has decided to look seriously at a major expansion program that had been proposed by the marketing department. Assume that you are an assistant to Leigh Jones, the financial vice president. Your first task is to estimate Harry Davis’s cost of capital. Jones has provided you with the following data, which she believes may be relevant to your task.
Specifically, it analyzes the major factors within a specific industry. The user can define the “industry” as broadly or as narrowly as is most appropriate for each business. Namely the creation of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) which aims to get similar results as the traditional exposure therapy without using any real objects or animals, but creating them in the computer. Psychologists can use various technology to conduct the exposure therapy. A study by Krijn, Emmelkamp, Biemond, de Ligny, Schuemie, & van der Mast (2004) researched the effectiveness of virtual exposure therapy and the differences between computer automatic virtual environment and a head-mounted display. Participants were people suffering from acrophobia. They found no difference in effectiveness between the two designs and that virtual exposure participants had less anxiety than patients with no treatment. Furthermore, these results were maintained in the follow-up after 6 months. Also, a meta-analysis was conducted by Morina et al. (2015) which researched several studies and their results with the aim to see how effective VRET can be compared to usual exposure therapy. They studied 14 clinical studies and found that patients did significantly better after the VRET than before and this applied for their follow-ups as well. In addition, results of behavioural assessment showed no significant differences between exposure in vivo and VRET. These findings support the application of VRET when treating specific
