After researching, observing and working on project 6 to create something that would beneficially help individuals in their daily life we decided to look deeper into 9Round near downtown Bloomington. This topic was inspired due to the fact that after we rode the bus we saw a lot of unhappy and not physically approachable people. In relation to the topic I know personally being active always gives me relief when under stress or just to have a hobby with other people around supporting you to be happy, healthy and overall state of mind. Exercise can act as a very efficient way to help prevent age-related diseases. Bradley says that many recent studies focusing on the correlation between physical activity and mental health, clinical evidence have shown that exercise can have a positive effect on the outcome of treating mental illness, such as Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and Parkinson’s disease (Bradley). Physical Therapy improves the patient's’ quality of life and lessens the pain of the disease itself. “Some authors state that the influence of exercise on brain functioning might be related to the human evolutionary process, since physical activity is associated with survival. It has been suggested that individuals who exercise might show a biological advantage over sedentary individuals”(Bradley). However, a high percentage reports feeling as if they are ‘‘stuck’’ or ‘‘want more’’ and are yet not diagnosable with a mental disorder (Fredrickson, 2008). Because happiness has been found to be the source of many desirable life outcomes e.g. career success, marriage, and health, it is of importance to understand, how languishing individuals can reach this ideal state: How can well-being be enhanced and misery reduced (Lyubomirsky, King, & Diener, 2005). Over the past decade, research in the field of positive psychology has emerged to provide evidence-based methods to increase an individual’s psychological well-being, through so called positive psychology interventions (PPI’s). PPI’s are treatment methods or intentional activities used to promote positive feelings or behaviour. PPI’s vary from writing gratitude letters, practicing optimistic thinking and replaying positive experiences. A meta-analysis of 51 independent PPI studies demonstrated significant results in the effectiveness of PPI’s increasing well-being (49 studies; r = .29) (Sin & Lyubomirsky, 2009).

I would recommend this article to other students and I have learned from this article that older adults with more access to exercise equipment, and have the emotional support of family and friends will pursue a more active lifestyle. In the future, more research is needed to address the limitations of this study by allowing a larger sample size. It would also be valuable to alter the location in which the study is performed; this may yield a larger sample size giving us a deeper analysis. It would also be beneficial to add in the variable of socioeconomic status to this study, being that older adults who have less financial resources may have fewer opportunities to lead a physically active life.
