In Rick Yancey’s dystopian story, “The 5th Wave”, trusting everyone can sometimes be a bad thing. For example, when you trust people, betrayal and people bringing you down can be the biggest thing that happens when trusting everyone. This is what happens in books, especially dystopian books, when an imaginary state or society goes very wrong. The 5th Wave follows Cassie Sullivan, a 16 year old girl from Ohio trying to survive in a world which has been destroyed by the waves of an alien invasion. These waves were earthquakes, tsunamis, diseases, etc. Cassie doesn't trust anyone since they might be an Other. This is what Cassie describes as the alien. Rick Yancey uses many craft moves to show the reader where you can’t trust everyone when you …show more content…
A piece of evidence on why you can’t trust everyone when trying to survive is when she goes back to her first rule. Yancey shows this by a quote in the book, “The first rule: Trust no one.” (Yancey 267). This quote shows the theme of the story because she repeats the same thing at the beginning of the book. Also another example that shows that you can’t trust everyone when trying to survive is when trusting others has gotten so bad in the book that she can’t rely on luck any more. Evidence that shows this is how Yancey shows a piece of text in the book, “You can’t trust luck anymore”. The Others have taught me that'' (Yancey 268). This quote shows the theme because it shows what I just explained earlier, how you can’t trust luck anymore. A final piece of evidence on how you can’t trust everyone when trying to survive is how she’s thinking about if Evan Walker is really what he says. Cassie is thinking about how he could probably be a traitor. Yancey shows this by a quote in the book, “What if the worst is true? That there is no Evan Walker farm boy, only Evan Walker human traitor - or the unthinkable (one word that pretty much sums up this alien invasion: Evan Walker Silencer)” (Yancey 273). This quote is important since you don’t know if someone is a human or a silencer until it’s too late. To conclude, Yancey is trying to describe not trusting everyone in the middle of the
“ SOmetimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.” Keri Russell. In the novel “ The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D Schmidt Hollings father decides that his sister is not going to college. Although Mr.Hoodhood has said no Heather can still make her own decisions according to what she wants in her life, so that she makes the results of her life and changes what she wants to change. In this situation heather has been beaten, but I think that Mr.hoodhood is wrong because you should go to college no matter how old you are. Just because your parent says you can’t do something doesn’t mean you can’t do it as an adult.
One of the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird is Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell is a selfish drunk who doesn't know how to control himself. He beats his children and he can’t hold a steady job for long. He is obsessed with revenge for Atticus for making him look like a fool at the trial of Tom Robinson, whom Ewell’s daughter is accusing of rape. Because of his false testimony, he can never be trusted again in front of the whole courtroom. He will do anything to get back at Atticus, and is willing to go as far as going after his children. He also has a grudge against the judge in the trial, and against the wife of the accused. Bob is crazy and delusional and is trying to gain back his reputation by taking down all the people that went against him in
Madame Defarge tries to kill and hurt everyone who opposes her in Tale of Two Cities. Her only hobby is knitting, and she knits as a way to show anger and bring fear to her enemies. Guilt is the inevitable consequence that comes along after committing a crime and is a feeling that can paralyze and tear one’s soul away. However, it is evident that an individual’s feelings of guilt are linked to what they believe is right or wrong. In Robertson Davies Fifth Business, guilt is a principal theme in the novel and its effects have a major toll on the lives and mental state of many characters. Throughout the novel, it is apparent that the values and morals instilled within childhood shape an individual’s personality, as exhibited by the different ways the characters within the novel respond when faced with feelings of guilt. The literary elements Davies utilizes in the passage, from pages fifteen to sixteen, introduce the theme of guilt and display the contrast in how
“All The President’s Men” Quote Analysis In the movie “All The President’s Men”, Managing Editor Ben Bradlee tells Woodstein, “Nothing’s riding on this except the First Amendment of the Constitution, freedom of the press and maybe the future of the country.” This quote can be analyzed in a few ways. First of all, Bradlee is being sarcastic. The First Amendment, the freedom of the press, and the future of the country are all going to be affected if Woodward and Bernstein get the story wrong.
The strong hold women have in society is often underestimated and disregarded especially in early years. In the novel Fifth Business the author makes a feminist criticism by providing women in the novel great influence on the plot, contrary to the society at the time. The influence of second wave feminism on the role of women is referenced through the fundamental impact of the female characters on their male counterparts in the nature of their relationships, beliefs and life decisions. Although the role of women in the development of the plot is seen through the eyes of Dunny. The author uses Dunny's development through the novel to further magnify the strong influence of women.
Our perspective on life can have a significant impact on our life. Depending on how you were raised it can impact your perspective on life very differently than others. For example if you were raised in a home of poverty or drug abuse you are use too that lifestyle when you're young. It wouldn't be till your older you would realize it is not a normal way of life. It shapes our life. In the novel the Glass Castle Jeanette is a perfect example of how your perspective changes throughout life as you experience life in addition to maturing. Her change in life had an unbelievable impact on her life that made her a well round mature adult despite her upbringing in poverty.

Slaughterhouse Five A quote from chapter one of Kurt Vonnegut's, Slaughterhouse Five, says, It is so short and jumbled and jangled, Sam, because there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre. Everybody is supposed to be dead, to never say anything or want anything ever again. Everything is supposed to be very quiet after a massacre, and it always is, except for the birds. And what do the birds say? All there is to say about a massacre, is a Poo-tee-weet?

Throughout the book The Good Earth written by Pearl S. Buck, it shows the evolvement of the main character Wang Lung and how owning or not owning land in the 1920s is affected by peasants in China. It also shows the struggles of a peasant’s life, going through poverty and what happens when wealth enters their lives. Owning land as a peasant is an important aspect of their living style, simply because they live off of what they are able to grow that season. They depend on their land for resources to provide for themselves and family; and also selling crops or trading crops in order to make money. The peasants of China exemplify how important their crops and land are to them throughout the whole book by showing love and compassion for them; but,
The Glass Castle is a novel that follows the life of a dysfunctional family from the perspective of Jeannette Walls, the third child of the Walls family. Throughout the stories, the readers see all the hardships the children face, as their lunatic parents do what they think is right. After reading the book, it seems to agree the quote “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands” by Anne Frank.
Imagine that everything you knew about where you resided turned out to be a big lie and that you were the only person that knew about it. Jonas the main character from The Giver by Lois Lowry, is a kid in a perfect community or so he thinks. Jonas receives the job of The Receiver of Memories. He receives many memories to ascertain that his "perfect" community is a fraud. He then plans an escape plan and succeeds. The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry shows its readers the basic truth that in life choices are a huge part in our lives and that sometimes it’s good to make our own choices but sometimes it's isn't. “Even in the darkest hour, when all hope seems lost… there is light.” Tolkein. The story, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, is about the a few survivors of WW2 who go on a long journey to get to the Wilhelm Gustloff. They end up meeting multiple people along the way and they all end up developing and changing along the journey. The families and children like Florian, Joana, Halinka, and Klaus that survived the “darkest hour” represent the future and the start of a new, better life. All of the characters that ended up surviving were driven by the need to create a future for the children and the need to be with their “family” they found along their journey.
In the sociologist Annette Lareau’s monograph, Unequal Childhoods, we are shown what social stratification influences parenting and how this perplexes within itself. Lareau’s book is a profound study that examines how parenting styles differ amongst poor parents, middle class, and the working class. Lareau’s book also examines how these parenting styles ultimately shapes the child’s future, sometimes negatively and other times positively. After viewing the short interview with Annette Lareau, I do agree with her findings.
