“Even in the darkest hour, when all hope seems lost… there is light.” Tolkein. The story, Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, is about the a few survivors of WW2 who go on a long journey to get to the Wilhelm Gustloff. They end up meeting multiple people along the way and they all end up developing and changing along the journey. The families and children like Florian, Joana, Halinka, and Klaus that survived the “darkest hour” represent the future and the start of a new, better life. All of the characters that ended up surviving were driven by the need to create a future for the children and the need to be with their “family” they found along their journey.

them to survive the frigid ocean that engulfed the Gustloff. Florian, the shoemaker and the wandering boy end up going to sleep in the projection room, the wandering boy ends up sleeping while Florian and the shoemaker have a conversation. “‘But the boy is the reason you were given a pass for a ship. He was too young to go alone.’ ‘Yes, yes, I’ve thought about that. Perhaps the children are little cherubs, looking after withered men like me.’” (237). This quote demonstrates how the children who have diverged from their families go towards other old fatherlike-figures to give them hope so they could help them get through these tough times as well. Florian and Emilia talk about her child. “‘Kind of incredible. She is you, she is you mother, your father, your country.’ He kissed her head and leaned down to whisper in my ear. ‘She is Poland’”. (261). This quote shows how Halinka would end up representing her country by being the future of Poland after this terrible war. Florian is talking to the shoe poet, who revealed his name, which is Heinz. “‘I spent fifty-five years with the love of my life. I lost her last July.’ He gestured to the boy. ‘Just when you think this war has taken eveerything you loved, you meet someone and realize that somehow you still have more to give.’” (315). This quote from Heinz represents that the world isn’t such a terrible place and the splitting of families can result in new ones being created based on the will to create a future after the war. Throughout the story, multiple characters come into the light and represent family-like figures that help replace the ones they are trying to find or have already lost.
Emilia is trying to follow Florian. “The knight’s silhouette came into view and inspired me to move faster.” (46). This quote demonstrates how Emilia fights through her pain, just to get to the knight, Florian, were she knows that she would be safe, even if he keeps rejected her. The shoe poet is talking to the wandering boy. “‘Rest. You’ll need your strength for the days ahead.’ ‘I’m fit as a lad, my dear girl.’ He pulled up the leg of his wool trousers to reveal his bony knee. It was covered in white. ‘Shoemaker’s secret,’ he whispered to the wandering boy. ‘There’s mercury in the white shoe polish. Fights off the arthritis. Fit as a lad, I am.’ The wandering boy pulled up his pant leg to inspect his own tiny knee.” (77). This quote shows how the shoe maker acts as a father-like role model who gives good advice to the wandering boy to make him feel safer under his supervision. Florian is in the estate with the group and is thinking about the shoe poet. “He seemed like a wise man, a kind man. I imagined he worked by oil lamp, cutting and sewing leather well into the night. He probably employed an apprentice and taught him an honest trade, unlike Dr. Lange, who had lured me with lies.” (88). This quote shows how Florian looks up to the shoemaker and thinks of him as a role model ever since his Father died
and he found out he was being used by Dr. Lange. Multiple characters in the book help other characters feel better so they dont dwell in the past about losing their parents because the characters help replace them with their parent-like attitudes and figures. All of the characters ended up giving eachother the drive to stay alive by either showing fatherlike characteristics or giving hope about the future of life. Characters like the shoe poet purposely give advice and take the father role to help protect them all. Klaus and Halinka give all of the characters the hope of a new, better life. Throughout the story, all of the characters lose and find new friends and family, the new family they find let them keep their will to survive.

Throughout the book The Good Earth written by Pearl S. Buck, it shows the evolvement of the main character Wang Lung and how owning or not owning land in the 1920s is affected by peasants in China. It also shows the struggles of a peasant’s life, going through poverty and what happens when wealth enters their lives. Owning land as a peasant is an important aspect of their living style, simply because they live off of what they are able to grow that season. They depend on their land for resources to provide for themselves and family; and also selling crops or trading crops in order to make money. The peasants of China exemplify how important their crops and land are to them throughout the whole book by showing love and compassion for them; but,
Family: together through everything and can drag each down, or carry each other up. No matter what, they are there, but sometimes it isn’t truly in person but in spirit. The author of Night, Elie Wiesel, had to deal with his hardships while his family was either dead or just dead weight. He endured so much throughout his life, and his family changed his perspective for the majority of it. With the thought of his family and his short term friends, he ends up surviving the brutal Holocaust while in the concentration camps at Auschwitz.
There are times when people are hurting and feel like giving up, but then they think of their family and they keep trying. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, Elie the narrator and protagonist is at a concentration camp. Although he lost his mother and sisters the first day, he still has his father with him. As the story goes on, readers learn of the hard experiences he goes through and what is going on his mind the whole time. He struggles with his faith and belief in God and he learns what it means to live not just for himself, but also for the one’s who love him. By examining the novel Night, we can see that family is the key to survival, which is important because those who do not have family often end up not surviving because they don’t have someone to push them and someone to live for besides themselves.
The Wife of Bath in The Canterbury Tales, a novel by Geoffrey Chaucer, is defined by her desires. Firstly, “Why should I care if they were pleased/ I was the one to be appeased.” (Line:220-221 pg:112) Her principal focus is to suffice her pleasures rather than to have a good relationship with all five of her husband's. She Also disregarded all their emotions and if she hurt them during the process of satisfying her ambitions. Additionally, “No doubt you understand this tale/ prepare to pay; it’s all for sale.” (line:420-421 pg:117) In this quote she even admits that her desires for money override her need of sexual activities. She is risking everything, even her body, all because she has this thirst for money. Finally, “Robbed and murdered,
The darkest moments of one's life often provide the most valuable lessons. The non-fiction story, Night, was written by Elie Wiesel in 1960. The excerpt found in the world literature textbook begins with the arrival of Eliezer, the author, and his father, at the concentration camp, Buchenwald. The story takes place around 1945. At their arrival, Eliezer’s father is already very ill and is getting closer to death each minute. Throughout the excerpt, Elie carries the unimaginable weight of his and his father's failing health. Unfortunately, his father dies and Eliezer loses hope and what was left of his strength. He no longer looks to the future, nor the past, but is instead left right in the middle. Shortly after his father's death, the camp's evacuation begins. Even with a chance of freedom, the possibility of Elie dying or being killed is still present. However, in the end, Elie survives and goes on to live a life dedicated to helping victims in situations very similar to the one he went through. The lesson, never give up in horrible times, is shown to readers through the conflict, sensory
This story makes the reader wonder, why must parents do this to their children, what kinds of motifs do they have for essentially ruining their child’s life. I believe
The hope to survive is shown through the author’s use of figurative language. For example, Gerda listening to her parents’ conversation about her father leaving on the train the next morning brings her strength. Her parents’ love and courage sustains Gerda through the happy

This quote has various different meanings and ways to perceive it. But, the most important meaning of this quote is to live your life in only the way that will make you happiest, and don’t ever let anyone stop you. Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, Amelia Earhart and Dr. Jennifer Welter never let anyone stand in the way and followed their dreams, becoming some very influential females in society.
