I am reading The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, and I am on page 302. This portion of the novel is about three newfound half-bloods named Jason, Piper, and Leo. This novel starts off with Jason waking up on a bus, not knowing who he is. Apparently his best friend is a guy named Leo, and he has a girlfriend named Piper. They’re all apart of the same boarding school for troubled kids. They arrive at the grand canyon, when one of their thought to be classmates turns into a storm spirit and tries to kill them, because they are half-bloods. At the time they do not know that they are. Their coach, also known as their Teacher, is actually a Satyr that tries to defend the kids. Jason eliminates the storm spirits with his golden sword, even though he was …show more content…
Having lost all of his memories, Jason is put in a difficult situation where he cannot look at his past to help him with his decisions. This quote shows his lack of confidence before the start of his quest “Everyone seemed to think he was so brave and confident, but they didn’t see how lost he really felt. How could they trust him when he didn’t even know who he was?” (Riordan 166). He is forced to rely on his instincts, and what his heart tells him is right, so that he can make the best decisions. This quote shows us how he makes decisions “He reached in his pocket and pulled out the gold coin. He let his instincts take over, flipping the coin in the air like he’d done it a thousand times. He caught it in his palm, and suddenly he was holding a sword—a wickedly sharp double-edged weapon.” (Riordan 23). Keep in mind that when doing this, he had no knowledge of him ever doing this before. This was all done on his instincts. Jason might not have memories of who he was, or what he did, but he has learned that if he is going to lead his friends like a Husky leading a sled ☺ (Simile) he is going to have to lead with integrity and use his instincts to help …show more content…
This is about Jason and Piper’s relationship that never really happened. She thought that she was with him, but it was just the mist playing tricks on her mind. In reality it never really happened. With Jason’s memories being ripped from him, he had no reason to believe they were ever together. Piper is saddened when Jason doesn’t remember that they had a relationship, so she acts distant because she doesn’t know what to do. She was in a difficult situation. As the story progresses though, we see that the two characters actually end up growing fond of each other. “He was sure now that they’d never known each other before the Grand Canyon. Their relationship was just a trick of the Mist in Piper’s mind. But the longer he spent with her, the more he wished it had been real.” (Riordan 212). It is kind of ironic in a way that you would think since they found out that they never were in a relationship prior to them meeting, and with Jason loosing all of his memory, it would be weird for them to start a real relationship when Jason couldn’t even fathom what was going on in his own life, or even know who Piper was. But even so they end up liking each other anyways. Jason and Piper have learned that they don’t have to avoid each other just because their original relationship
“ SOmetimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.” Keri Russell. In the novel “ The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D Schmidt Hollings father decides that his sister is not going to college. Although Mr.Hoodhood has said no Heather can still make her own decisions according to what she wants in her life, so that she makes the results of her life and changes what she wants to change. In this situation heather has been beaten, but I think that Mr.hoodhood is wrong because you should go to college no matter how old you are. Just because your parent says you can’t do something doesn’t mean you can’t do it as an adult.
In the book, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, it follows a Olympian named Louie Zamperini, and his journey. Louie Zamperini was born in Olean, New York, his family later then moved to Torrance, California. Louie is: rebellious, resourceful, among many other things. Courage is having to stand up for people who are being treated unfairly or if they have different skin color. In Mildred Taylor’s book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Stacey has to show courage by standing up for his friends and family. Stacey is a seventh grader at Great Faith Elementary School and is the oldest Logan kid. when Papa is gone he feels like he needs to be the man of the house and watch out for his younger siblings. Stacey had to show courage when he helped Little Man get back at the bus, takes the blame for the cheat notes, and took T.J. home when he was injured.
2) What is the main conflict in the book? Is it external or internal? How is this conflict resolved throughout the course of the book?
In the novella of The Crucible by Arthur Miller vengeance is walking Salem in causing several conflicts throughout the Salem village. Many of the conflicts are due with getting back at one another with the need for revenge. “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” (Miller 81). This quote is trying to prove the point the proctor has a very good understanding of what is happening in how the little girls are rebelling and acting out. They are accusing several women of being witches. “Why, Abigail Williams charge her” (Miller 77). The quote is trying to show how many of the girls are calling out the wives in the Salem village.
Redemption is defined as the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil. Throughout life, individuals are faced with numerous incidences of redemption that can be taken up or ignored. Those who choose to take the opportunity are often able to grow mentally and accelerate much further than those who do not. However, what must be taken into account is that true redemption is for oneself rather than for others. For example, redemption by finally getting a well-deserved promotion which impresses others is not truly beneficial redemption. What must occur is happiness for the promotion within. In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the employment of redemption as a central idea prevails throughout the novel, specifically in the life
U.S army general John J. Pershing, also known as “Black Jack” once said “A competent leader can get efficient service from poor troops, while on the contrary an incapable leader can demoralize the best of troops.” (“John J Pershing Quotes”). John commanded the American Expeditionary Force, or “AEF” in Europe at the time of World War 1 (Mifflin). He was one of the greatest generals in our society and accomplished a lot in his time on earth.
The only way to describe Mark Twain The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is to say it is an absolute American classic.. The book takes place along the Mississippi River during the dreadful time of racial standards where slavery was at its high point. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn the theme of a journey to freedom is expressed in many ways such as Huck escaping pap’s alcoholism, Jim’s slavery and Tom Sawyers desperate attempts to escape from reality. The book starts in the small town of Huck’s birth where he is living with two old woman until Pap wins custody of Huck. After the custody battle Pap attacks Huck in a drunken state so that he can collect Huck’s money; this causes Huck to fake his own death and run away to a small island where he finds Jim and they begin their trip down the great Mississippi.
A tragic hero can be defined as literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction. A well known novel in American Literature is The Great Gatsby which displays an example of a tragic hero. The author of the book, F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrayed an example of a tragic hero through the main character of the novel named Jay Gatsby. In the book Gatsby tries to accomplish the American Dream by gaining wealth and doing everything in his power to be with the love his life Daisy Buchanan. His whimsical ways granted him wealth and allowed him to be in the arms of his lover Daisy but, it also leads him to death. Jay Gatsby can be considered a tragic hero because he has a tragic flaw and because his misfortune was not wholly deserved.
After finishing the book Insurgent, the reader is left with many significant morals to take away from the story. Some of the lessons shown are that you should always do what is right, people are stronger together, and you should overcome your fears. Firstly, when Tris is conflicted between following her boyfriend and completing the task her parents strived to accomplish, she knows she needs to follow her instincts. Although it is a difficult decision to make, she acknowledges, “He thinks I will be here, but I will be working against him, working with the father he despises. This lie – this lie is the worst I have ever told. I will never be able to take it back” (425). This quotation shows an example of how even though she feels terrible
Malala Yousafzai, an activist for female education and the youngest-ever Noble Peace Prize recipient, once said that “when the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful” ("Malala Yousafzai Quotes"). Malala continuously combats the worldwide social norm that women are powerless and unequal to men by speaking out for women’s rights when everyone else is silent. Malala was so impactful and powerful that in the eyes of the Taliban, she was a threat, and they tried, yet failed, to kill her. Similarly, Antigone in Sophocles’ Antigone fights for her beliefs and meets resistance, but in the end, has a powerful impact. Sophocles has akin beliefs to Malala and contends that women in ancient Greek society are strong and influential. He does
A main trait of Jason’s is his obliviousness to everything. Jason doesn’t realize that Medea is crying for a different reason and thinks that whatever he says is right when he asks Medea, “Why is your cheek so white and turned away from me? Are not these words of mine pleasing for you to hear?” (p.55). Jason lacks mindful attention to what is happening around him. Jason was smart enough before to know that Medea is evil and even says that she is “incapable of controlling her bitter temper” (p.43). Mede...

In the novel “Everything I Never Told You” by Celeste Ng, James is arguably one of the roundest characters in the family. Being a successful Chinese immigrant with a wife and three children, he hoped to live out the American dream and lead an easy life. Sadly, James faced racial aggression and family issues, which weren’t always mutually exclusive, that affected his entire life. He married a white woman, which was looked down upon, and they had relationship issues that eventually lead to her leaving but then returning to the family.
