Are you a Leader… Or an Example…Or are you Neither..? In the book Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles. Ruby the main protagonist is a black girl who lives in a segregated town. (Segregation is when people were forced to be separated by race). With this, I believe Ruby Bridges is a Leader because Ruby Bridges is thoughtful, determined and most of all Ruby Bridges is loyal to those she trusts.
The first reason that Ruby Bridges is a Leader is because Ruby Bridges is thoughtful. Some evidence supporting this and I quote. “Please God forgive these people because even if they say those bad things,they do not know what they are doing. So you forgive them, Just like You did those folks long ago, When they said terrible things about you.” This shows that when people are cruel to her she will still pray for them and overall makes her a Leader.

From the article it states “On Ruby’s first day a crowd of white people protested, saying they do not want blacks in their school but Ruby went to the school anyway.” This is important because even if Ruby will be made fun of, she will still work towards her goal (to go to school and learn). Making sure it is a good example is the most important part of being a good leader in your community. The Benchwarmers started with the intention of helping a little boy gain confidence, and that blossomed into a whole community standing by their side to fight against bullies. All the children in the end were taught by great leaders, came together, and accepted each other. Leading by example does not just happen in fictional stories though. Ruby Bridges is one of the very many people who has changed history. Bridges has helped desegregate schools all around the world. She still stands today, sharing her thoughts and ideas to stop racism and segregation. Ruby’s life has had many ups, and downs, but she still seems to look on the bright side in almost every situation. Whites threatened and harshly criticized brave, confident, heroic American activist, Ruby Bridges for being one of the first African-American children to enter the William Frantz Elementary School, a school for white students, which helped end segregation in schools. Without Ruby Bridges, our schools may still be segregated to this day.
Rosa Parks What’s a hero? A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Hero’s can also be someone who has made a change in the world and or a society like Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks is considered a hero because of all the things she went through and made happen throughout her life.
This passage bothered me. It is probably the part that bugged me the most about this book. There are many African Americans who are better behaved, smarter, more artistic, more athletic, etc. then white children. There are also many African Americans who are less educated and more poorly behaved than white children, but the same for both of these things go with white children. It bothers me that she knows that if the worst child in the class was white she wouldn't care if the best child in the class was white. I think that throughout the book she often generalizes with African Americans and doesn't even realize it. She claims that she is getting better, but I don't think that she really is. She keeps trying to have the African American children become the same as the white children.

In 1954 September 8th Ruby Bridges was born in Tylertown, Mississippi to the parents of Lucille and Abon Bridges. At the age of 4 Ruby Bridges and her family relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960 Ruby parents volunteer her to participate in the NAACP New Orleans Color System program. The Program was to have blacks integrated into an all-white elementary school which is called William Frantz Elementary school. Ruby father Abon was very hesitant of his daughter attending the school along with 5 other black students. They all had pass the test to attend William Frantz Elementary school but ruby end up being the only one to attend. Two others of the 6 black students went back to their old school and the other three chose to transfer to another school, leaving ruby to attend by herself. Ruby mother Lucille felt very strongly about her choice to send her daughter off to William Frantz Elementary. She felt it was a great opportunity for better education for her daughter and that it was the first step for all black African American’s children, November 14, 1960 Ruby Bridges first day of school. She was surrounded by officers and her mother on her way to school. Ruby had to march through a crowd of angry white folks who held signs and yell names at her. Leaders do not just appear out of thin air and automatically start making great things happen in the world. A leader must learn from prior leaders or role models that they are surrounded by that they look up to. Not everyone can be a leader, only some people have the correct characteristics it takes to lead others in the right direction. Those who do great things, for example volunteering at a homeless shelter, are not leaders. Many people mistake a “great person” as being a leader, which is completely incorrect (Kouzes and Posner, p. 3). While playing an active role in your community is a positive thing it does not make someone a leader of that community. All leaders have a group of people they have inspiration too and that is a good way of determining who your personal leaders are. My mother, brother, and grandfather are my leaders because I have always looked up to them and tried to mimic some of the great things that I have seen them do. My mother has always been an independent women with goals and an action plan to accomplish those set goals. Stephen, my elder brother, is outgoing and tends to have a leveled head when it comes to evaluating stressful situations. My grandfather is the most caring person I know and he is amazing at keeping situations under control in order to please everyone. These are all the qualities I want to combine into my own leadership style. I know I am not a efficient leader of these actions yet, but I plan on growing into this as I more on into my career, fulfill my set goals, and adjust to the curve-balls that life throws at me.

Obama quotes her by stating, "So for an entire year, little Ruby Bridges sat all alone, a class of one, dutifully learning her lessons" (290). Ruby Bridges is an example of how hard education was doing a period of segregation, yet she still stood her ground and tried to learn. Her experience makes her knowledgeable on the struggle of education. The fact that she was a young child who had to suffer through the harsh opinions of racist people who disliked her because of her skin color when she was only trying to learn makes her a credible reference on the topic of education.
