I was able to learn by doing through my 4-H projects that taught me various life skills which I can now use to apply to other areas of my life. My 4-H club curriculum focused our projects on culture, environment, and interaction with the community. The goals that my group had set was to expand our knowledge of multiple cultures, strengthen our fishing and camping skills, and learn how to care for our environment in different ways. The most recent 4-H projects that my club has been centering our attention on have been part of the culture and environment curriculums.
During the first year of focusing on culture, I worked with two other group members to teach the rest of my club about the Greek culture. We collaborated with one another to create a presentation and Olympic course after we learned that the original Olympics was held in Greece. This group experience enhanced my skills of cooperation, time management, independence, learning the values of various cultures. As a group, we equally split up the work of researching and presenting, so as a responsible group member, I learned to follow through with my portion of work. Other than doing research, presenting the information and activity to

the rest of our group members built my public speaking skills. While the other groups presented their information, activities, and snacks relating to the culture they researched, I gained valuable listening skills. Some of the interesting points that I learned by listening to the other presentations were that the one of the drinks that originates from Mexico is a rice based drink called horchata and the hawaiian word for the month I am born in, September, is kepakemapa. In the following year, we continued to focus on the culture curriculum, but instead we would concentrate on the japanese culture.
Our project also changed over time because rather than learning about cultures from presentation we began creating a Japanese zen garden for the Konawaena Elementary School. This became the Japanese Garden Renewal Project which we planned, organized, and planted a garden based on the japanese culture and garden influences. After participating in this project with my club, I learned the importance of gardening carefully as to not injury the plant. Furthermore, before even gardening, there was a long planning process during which I learned how to communicate with group members to make decisions and how to ask for a donation when we needed
materials. These projects opened my door to new experiences that I am very grateful for because it has taught me so many things that I never knew. One of the new experiences that I gained was when I organized a plan and drew out a sketch for our japanese garden in order to proceed with our ideas. During the planning period of our project, I learned that writing down and creating a sketch of our ideas and thoughts is a useful tool to help picture how we will make our plan a reality. At this time, it was also the first time I learned how to write a letter asking for a donation. I am grateful that I learned this skill because I used it again to ask for a donation of materials for our annual 4-H Demonstration Day which my club was chair of. The 4-H projects that I participated in gave me the opportunity to learn beyond my current knowledge about specific topics and gain beneficial life skills.
In addition to this, I feel that my Team building class gave me good insight into the inner workings and mechanics of how teams work. More work.
The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
Describe what you did, what you learned, your weekly activities, in what ways are you able to apply the ideas and concepts gained, and finally, describe one important thing that you are thinking about in relation to the activity.
Even to this day I tried to exhibit many of the life skills I learned through the Eagle Scout process. I believe that completing this has led me on to my future career goals in conservation. Boy Scouts has given me a great interest in the outdoors, and also taught me the importance of environmental stewardship.
By working together there is information sharing, improve safety and quality also collaboration gives knowledge to other professionals. (Littlechild and Smith, 2013).what I have learned through working in partnership with other professionals was creating a poster related to what each professional does. Some of the professionals I did not know how exactly they work together in partnership. Example: I was not aware of how a radiology would work with a social work and the outcome of that was that Radiology develop and maintain collaborative relationship with medical colleagues and participates in regular meetings with other professionals activities to meet the needs of a service users therefore they collaborate with Social Workers. By doing a poster and delivering information I learned a lot from the other team members, shared experiences knowledge and skills with other group members. Group work made me realise how it is very important to work in multi-displinary team, the benefit of it and what others can benefit from. During the poster each of the student was from different professional however we all had the question but each had to look at it in each profession perspectives. This gave an opportunity to everyone to go and search for each professional and communicate with the rest of the group the outcome of the presentation. By doing that, we exchanged ideas learned from each other’s skills and used it into practice. I have learned about sharing information with others, learned about communication and
I have done so by participating in numerous activities, and when I commit to something, I put all my effort into it, to the fullest extent of my ability. This allows me to be able to meet and cultivate relationships with new people at Roswell High School that I would not have met otherwise. In forming these newfound friendships, I have been able to mature socially and emotionally; I learned to nurture my ability to empathize with others and to express my care and compassion for others more easily. This has allowed me to realize my true heart for people, and I have used these skills, along with my enthusiasm and sense of humor, to encourage an environment of school pride.
fraternity, I came up with an event called GoWest Goes Greek. GoWest Goes Greek was an event where I reached out to all social, art, music, and academic sororities/fraternities to come together and do a huge community service project. The project consisted of cleaning all the GoWest buses, to show them that as a campus we are grateful for the free services and all the disrespectful behaviors they have to encounter. To conclude just a glimpse of my service I have done for the community and campus, I would like to talk about one last experience that impacted people here in the community but also people internationally. I was Vice President for an organization called Rotract, which is an international volunteer organization. In my term of being VP my responsibility was to do a local and international fundraising event.
We would visit the garden in the school and finally, watch a video with audio on plants. I will use mixed ability grouping for group activities for the students to identify plant types by the leaves and discuss among each other each type. The long time learning activities for the class will be for the student to learn how to plant, water, give nutrition to plant by planting a beans in a pot and we all watch it grow. The students Knowledge will be accessed by giving the students the option of either search the internet for more facts about plant and write a short paragraph about what they learned, or draw and label a picture of a plant and taking a quiz they discuss their answer in
The Pre-K and Kindergarten class studied habitats of various animals and insects. They were given examples and tough how the animals made their homes. The students built a bird house as their project and as something to take home to remind them of what they learned. Finally they went on a field trip to Legoland where they explored and built “habitats” for their families and the Lego people. The first and second grade class learned about marine life and the ocean. They built shoe box dioramas of coral reefs and created art projects depicting sea life as well as learning new facts about the ocean. The students got to go to the Aquarium for their field trip. Finally the third and fourth graders studied the rain forests and their ecosystems. The students built rainforest models and terrariums along with small group discussions on different ideas human intervention and conservation. They finished their week at the zoo where they studied different rainforest inhabitants in
Freshman year it was one of the last big science projects of the school year and my teacher reveals a list of the groups and I see my group and they just stared at each other. I waited for someone to step up when I realized that it was going to have to be me. I began talking to everyone individually and seeing what they knew and how they could put together what they knew so we could all contribute to this project and walk away a little
The role of gardens play a much more important role in Japan than here in the United States. This is due primarily to the fact the Japanese garden embodies native values, cultural beliefs and religious principles. Perhaps this is why there is no one prototype for the Japanese garden, just as there is no one native philosophy or aesthetic. In this way, similar to other forms of Japanese art, landscape design is constantly evolving due to exposure to outside influences, mainly Chinese, that effect not only changing aesthetic tastes but also the values of patrons. In observing a Japanese garden, it is important to remember that the line between the garden and the landscape that surrounds it is not separate. Instead, the two are forever merged, serving as the total embodiment of the one another. Every aspect of the landscape is in itself a garden. Also when observing the garden, the visitor is not supposed to distinguish the garden from its architecture. Gardens in Japan incorporate both natural and artificial elements, therefor uniting nature and architecture into one entity. Japanese gardens also express the ultimate connection between humankind and nature, for these gardens are not only decorative, but are a clear expression of Japanese culture.
Working with a group of individuals was a huge help as it showed me how to think and write with a group of people not just myself. Working with individually allowed for flexibility and adaptability in my writing and working process.
What have you done in the past to contribute toward a teamwork environment? Currently I work on smaller teams of entrepreneurial minded people striving to lay the groundwork for solid business foundation. We produce work that is goal oriented and I give to the balance of ideas so results can only be delivered by committee. I use my strengths in full as an integral part of this team, which helps to compensate for each other's weaknesses. For example, recently one of my partners was having some difficulty conceiving a promotional item that needed to get out quickly. I suggested a few things to get him stimulated. My different personality type balanced and complemented his, as we worked to meet the deadlines. The result was something neither of us expected and was roundly complimented for its scope and creativity. This assignment was definitely his responsibility to complete, however I deemed it in both of our interests to get something real done, otherwise the overall success of the business could be hurt, thus affecting me and my co-workers. Another good example of my contribution to teams would be my volunteered effort with various community organizations. Recently I attended an open orientation for people who were interested in starting community gardens. During the course of the event I met with like-minded but diverse people. We developed a plan to raise funds and work toward the goal of establishing a sustainable community garden. My contribution was and now is to offer clarity in who is responsible for what and avoid overlapping authority. I noticed a risk recently where two team members were competing for control of a certain area. My solution was to divide that area into two distinct parts and give each complete control in ...
From the very onset we were introduced to our conference groups. Ensuring a diverse mix of students and teachers, I was pleased to find myself exposed to a wide range of cultures and backgrounds. The student and adult group leaders were amazingly friendly and organized. I was very impressed by their leadership abilit...
Many times people forget that teamwork is a combination of the words TEAM and WORK. Which means it takes more than a combined group of people or a team, but it takes that and actions. Positivity, effective skills and effort from each group member. A good team member does their share of work in the group. equity and fairness are key in being a good team member also. A few other characteristics that help a group be successful are , positivity, complimenting other members, communication skills and fairness. By fairness I mean allowing everyone the chance to do something. This group project taught me the ability to be a team player. This is a skill needed to be successful in a group. I feel like it benefit me and my group members because normally
