fraternity, I came up with an event called GoWest Goes Greek. GoWest Goes Greek was an event where I reached out to all social, art, music, and academic sororities/fraternities to come together and do a huge community service project. The project consisted of cleaning all the GoWest buses, to show them that as a campus we are grateful for the free services and all the disrespectful behaviors they have to encounter. To conclude just a glimpse of my service I have done for the community and campus, I would like to talk about one last experience that impacted people here in the community but also people internationally. I was Vice President for an organization called Rotract, which is an international volunteer organization. In my term of being VP my responsibility was to do a local and international fundraising event. …show more content…
What I came up with was doing a fundraiser for an individual that was from Macomb, IL and had went to Kibera, Africa to serve the needs of the people. My vision was to raise money for the children of the community to provide them with housing, education, and food. I did not want this to be a me thing but to get the campus involved with something bigger then themselves. I got University Union Board, Inter-Hall Council, Resident Assistant Council, Western All Volunteer Effort, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Alpha Phi Omega to co-sponsor this fundraiser that raise over $1,400 that provide the children we sponsor for six months of education, housing, and food. I have truly spent my last three years serving and being a great leader to this campus due to me believing someone has to step up and lead the way for
Research Context: Being new to a college campus, I've learned to adjust. I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone and learned to explore various outlets. Little did I know that the college culture didn’t fall too far from the typical high school environment. Subcultures, or what I’d like to call clicks, seem to be something that transcends each level of schooling. In college, this subculture is known as the Greek system and it is one of the major outlets students use for socializing.
Later that year, I was accepted into Spanish Honors Society, a volunteer based program to help out the Spanish communities near my school along with volunteering to help raise money for organizations that help less developed countries. One particular project that I helped raise money for through Spanish Honors Society, was Project Running Waters. The money raised for this event was donated to help people living in Guatemala receive fresh water through pipe systems that would be built. We raised over one thousand dollars to donate to this cause. Knowing that I can positively impact individuals in my community and in other countries makes me feel like I have grown maturely and am able to understand what needs to be done to make a difference to
In this paper I am going to write about Greek Americans. My paper will include detail about Greek Americans such as residence and housing, date and place of origin, economic activities, education, kinship, traditions and religion as well as their future in the United States.
organizations, my service did not stop there. I was also involved in several other clubs and
I can recall last year our president came up with a No Shave November fundraiser which involved a “who can grow the longest beard?” type of contest. We all had to sign up for committees that were a part of the set up. I co chaired an advertisement committee where we set up posters and got the word out about this new event so students would get involved. When it came down to sign ups, there was a low attendance. I overheard a group of guys arguing with each other about the contest and who would win, seeing that the competition part really excited them I challenged them to all join for the fun of it and a possible prize if they did win. All of them signed up that day and even though the event didn't end up being successful it was fun to see them involved and questioning me everyday about who was winning.
When I reached high school I developed an Improv group by the name of The Stray Dogs in order to raise money for our hometown non-kill animal shelter, Lake County Animal Shelter. The shelter had recently made a statement how they were low on funds and unable to take in any more animals due to their supplies were almost nonexistent. Through putting on Improv shows a few peers and I were able to raise over $8,000 dollars and scout countless volunteers for the shelter throughout the course of four years. All of the money we made throughout doing four years worth of shows went directly to the shelter in order to empower, support, and strengthen the wellbeing of the animals and
Imagine hundreds of huge muscular men, with sweat dripping down their brown, leathery backs, as they test their strengths and skills. Thousands of years ago, the Greeks started a series of competitions that they are now famous for creating, called the Olympics. At these events Greek food , customs, courtesies, and history showed off some of the best that Greek culture and region has to offer.
I was privileged enough to be inducted into two honor societies through my school: Gamma Sigma Epsilon and Epsilon Sigma Pi. Gamma Sigma Epsilon is the Chemistry national honor society, while Epsilon Sigma Pi is a college-wide honor society. I was lucky enough to have a research opportunity. I was able to research DNA Replication at Rockefeller University in Manhattan.
I began my junior year of college by volunteering at Buckingham Estates Memory Care Community, an assisted living facility serving individuals living
I am an active executive member of a number of clubs and associations on campus including Amnesty International Laurier chapter, Students for Palestine, Human Rights Student Association, Divest Laurier, Mock Trial, Laurier Campus Anti-Fascist Network and 15 and Fairness Laurier. On top of all of these extracurricular activities, I was able to complete community-based research in Brantford, partnering with SAFE Brantford, BRAVE (Brant’s Response Against Violence Everywhere) and Laurier. I was able to look at how to better improve outreach to survivors of domestic violence in faith communities by looking at how we improve clergy referrals and access to resources. My research ultimately helped to secure more funding for improved resources at the Brant Sexual Assault Center. I also actively volunteer with St. Vincent De Paul meal programs and Black and Pink’s LGBTQ2+ prison pen pal program.
Running a contest can generate buzz and awareness of your fundraiser. It could be a referral contest, where the person gets a prize for referring 5 people who donate $20 or
Currently on, campus, I am involved in Family Court Mentoring: a program that teaches high school students from the general St. Louis area life skills, such as how to manage anger, make friends and plan for the future. This is in the same vein as my last major service trip: volunteering for Outreach 360 in Monte Cristi. This by far was one of the most revelatory programs for me. Not only did I get to work with amazing kids, I gained a better understanding of the opportunity disparities prominent around the world. Family Court Mentoring, for me at least, was just trying to continue the service that I was a part of in the Dominican Republic and bringing that to the St. Louis community.
I am also involved in two different co-ed fraternities: Alpha Phi Omega (an international service fraternity) and Phi Alpha Delta (an international pre-law fraternity) which I hold an executive position
Besides academics, fine arts and sports in school, I have attained leading roles in different groups. This year, I am the Spirit Leader of Student Council encouraging monthly goals and themes and assisting in school events. From creating a student council with a group of peers three years ago we have had success in many events and have found new ways to spread spirit, gather important information and assist with financial groups. Recently, I stepped up to be the leader of the fundraising committee for our ...
I honestly have no idea what program I will choose to associate myself with, but chances are it will be a sport or a creative writing club because those are my interest. Whatever I choose though I plan to create a safe and open environment so that the students will feel comfortable enough to reach out to me and discuss issues and troubles that they may be facing in their home lives. I want to be more than just an adult to my pupils, I want them to see that I came from beginnings the likes that they are experiencing now and that things get better. What I intend on giving back to my community isn’t going to come in the form of money nor materialistic things, but in the form of hope. Hope for a brighter future, hope that our youth will do what we never could do, hope that one life has been saved by a kind listening ear.
