In UNI 110 Critical Reading and Thinking my critical reading and thinking has grown vastly. In September my understanding of critical reading and thinking was a bear minimum of problem solving questions with one unique answer, after September I now understand critical reading and thinking requires precision, viewpoints, and facts. My strengths in critical reading and thinking are now strengths of understanding, deciphering, and argumentative skills.
Before beginning UNI 110 Critical Reading and Thinking my writing, reading, and thinking was that of a basic high school student; I could write a paper on any topic but I would not fully understand the topic. A prime example of this was a paper I wrote on the Catholic Faith in high-school, I only wrote the

paper with the viewpoint of a Catholic parishioner; I did not even think to account for the general publics view of the Catholic Faith and Catholic stances on controversial topics. In college when I had to write the paper on government surveillance I not only incorporated the affirmative side but I also the negative side; by writing both sides of these papers, I showcased I understand, research, write, and provide evidence for both sides of any topic with vast understanding. Writing outlines and rebuttals for debates were an monumental help for me writing, thinking, and reading in this semester.
Working with a group of individuals was a huge help as it showed me how to think and write with a group of people not just myself. Working with individually allowed for flexibility and adaptability in my writing and working process.
Presenting the information in a debate was also a large sign of growth. Debating was a large part of growth for me as I learned how to present research and critical thinking. During debates, one had to learn how to counter and present in-front of audience and judges, in pressure situations. Debating also showed us that we can't argue based on our emotions but logic. Logical understanding of a topic is a strength where I massively grew and proclaimed my knowledge of growth in critical reading and thinking.
Open minded skepticism is also an area I grew during my time in UNI 110, I now look at everything in life with an open mind but reserved, which is something I hadn't done before. Previously I would either accept something or not, there was no in-between today, I live in the in-between and always research any and all topics until I come to a calculated
conclusion. UNI 110 also promoted my creative problem solving skills. UNI 110 pushed its students to come up with creative and unconventional yet logical solutions to interesting problems, a prime example of this was the boating activity we did this semester. UNI 110 showcased every thing is open to question in all situations, including authority! Questioning everything may change not only my academics and my beliefs as an individual looks at everything from a new perspective. Lastly, UNI 110 required me to enhance my effective communication. In all aspects whether reading, thinking, writing, and communicating UNI 110 pushed its students to communicate everything effectively to both students and teachers. This effective communication has been shown in proof through the group debates this semester for both topics, without effective communication; these projects would have failed due to the complexity of the tasks. The opinion assignment is the last example of effective communication and how my communication has grown, as in the opinion assignment I didn't communicate why I believed what I believe well, rather today that paper would have evidence, examples, and questions. In UNI 110 Critical Reading and Thinking my critical reading and thinking has grown vastly through creative problem solving, open minded skepticism, effective communication, and many more facets in my daily life.
The article, “Critical Thinking? You Need Knowledge” by Diane Ravitch, discusses how in the past people have been deprived from the thinking process and abstract thinking skills. Students need to be given more retainable knowledge by their teachers to improve their critical thinking skills. (Ravitch).
By working together there is information sharing, improve safety and quality also collaboration gives knowledge to other professionals. (Littlechild and Smith, 2013).what I have learned through working in partnership with other professionals was creating a poster related to what each professional does. Some of the professionals I did not know how exactly they work together in partnership. Example: I was not aware of how a radiology would work with a social work and the outcome of that was that Radiology develop and maintain collaborative relationship with medical colleagues and participates in regular meetings with other professionals activities to meet the needs of a service users therefore they collaborate with Social Workers. By doing a poster and delivering information I learned a lot from the other team members, shared experiences knowledge and skills with other group members. Group work made me realise how it is very important to work in multi-displinary team, the benefit of it and what others can benefit from. During the poster each of the student was from different professional however we all had the question but each had to look at it in each profession perspectives. This gave an opportunity to everyone to go and search for each professional and communicate with the rest of the group the outcome of the presentation. By doing that, we exchanged ideas learned from each other’s skills and used it into practice. I have learned about sharing information with others, learned about communication and

To describe Critical Thinking (CT) as a “Higher-order skill” is to put it mildly. After spending twelve hours reading this week’s assigned articles and a great deal more on the subject of CT, I still feel like a first-grader being asked to solve a calculus equation. To paraphrase Tim van Gelder, learning CT skills is hard and a life-time journey. It is not enough to know the concepts, the student must actively practice CT themselves to improve their understanding (2004). I first became a critical thinker in third grade, after moving to London. As an American child, I had been taught that important history began in 1776, a history measured in hundreds of years. In England I saw a history measured in thousands of years and was taught the opposing
When I sat on the floor for 10 minutes, facing the corner, and talking to no one, while groaning. It felt weird because I could sense people glaring at me, and I could predict, what they are probably saying. They would probably think I am crazy or have some mental issue because of the way I am behaving. It also felt very lonely because I wasn’t able to talk to anyone, and that’s when I started to think deeply about something. During the 10 minutes, the time seems to go slower, especially when you are thinking deeply. 5 minutes in real life seemed like 30 minutes, when I was in the corner. I learned that caring for Christopher must have been hard for the parents, and it is understandable that time to time, the parents could lose their temper.
“Properly open mind is just the most enjoyable way to live” Ronald Geiger said in his article about skepticism. Skepticism is one of the first steps on the road to open, creative and critical thinking that young people should take in their lives. It is important for the people in adolescence period, like high school students, to learn how to think properly and be critical toward some of the aspects in society. The course in skepticism in high school will allow students to have positive effects on their intellectual level, ethical standings, physical conditions and psychological status. Skepticism should be included in high school curricular and be one of the requirements for graduation because of its tremendous amount beneficial factors in
What critical thinking skills are needed for the leader committed to social justice to effectively communicate at all levels of practice?
Chris had just been promoted as an Executive Assistant for Pat the CEO, Chief Executive Officer, of Faith Community Hospital. Pat had given Chris her very first assignment on her first day of work as an executive assistant and that was to gather information so that Pat can present the issues to the board of directors. Faith Hospital is faced with issues that needed attention and the board of directors must be notified of the issues so that a solution can be remedy to help the hospital stay in business.
The process of critical thinking requires you to ask more questions of both others and of yourself before a decision or determination is made. In order to successfully evaluate data in a critical manner, you must have a system in place to assess information as it is presented. In any situation whether you are having a conversation, observing others, or material you have read, you must be ready to probe deeper and ask the right question at the right time.
Critical thinking is a process of applying various skills to analyze information. Critical thinking uses rationality to distinguish between emotion and fact. This paper will discuss the definition of critical thinking, and the skills it takes to think critically. It will also provide an example of critical thinking applied to my current working environment. Finally this paper will discuss the importance and benefits of critical thinking in the decision-making processes.
In his essay Critical Thinking: What Is It Good For? (In Fact, What Is It), Howard Gabennesch explains the importance of critical thinking by drawing attention to how its absence is responsible for societies many ills including, but not limited to, the calamity in Vietnam. Yet, at the end of his essay, Gabennesch also mentions that, despite “the societal benefits of critical thinking, at the individual level, uncritical thinking offers social and psychological rewards of its own.”(14). Similarly, it is these rewards that, like the bait on a fishhook, often make individuals hesitant to engage in critical thinking despite the resulting harm to both them and society.
“An Army leader is any one who by virtue of assumed role or assigned responsibility inspires and influences peoples to accomplish organizational goals. She or He motivates people both inside and outside the chain of command to pursue actions, focus thinking, and shape decisions for the greater good of the organization.1” But for him to do that effectively and efficiently , he has to be prepared, shaped and refined. There are few institutions to prepare such leaders and CGSC is one of those institutions which are mandated, organized and equipped to prepare such leaders. In implementing its mandate, CGSC has programmed ILE common core C 100 to provide foundations for effective leadership development. The lessons covered in this block of instructions are important pillars of leadership development and impact on officers differently depending on the fields/specialties and the level of positions held. This paper therefore attempts to discuss the relevance of critical thinking and problem solving, group decision making, overcoming biases, planning and order production lessons on my future assignment as a logistics staff officer.
Knowledge is generated through critical and creative thinking. Creative thinking is something new or original that is created with value. Critical thinking is a type of thinking that questions assumptions and validates or invalidates a current belief or something that is said to be previously true. Knowledge is created through the culmination of generally accepted assumptions and creativity. How do you separate general assumptions and creativity? These two types of thinking can be easily separated in regards to concrete or realistic ideas compared to abstract or original ideas however to generate new, acceptable knowledge critical and creative thinking must interact together. The questioning of established beliefs with the creation of unorthodox new ideas will expose the most beneficial knowledge for the world.
Working together with other people for an assignment can be a challenging task in some cases but luckily, I worked well with my group members. The decisions we made were anonymous although we paced ourselves individually when it came to completing our separate parts of the essay. As a group I believe that we connected well on an interpersonal level as all four of us were able to make alterations to any problem together . Furthermore, we did not give each other a chance to get angry at one another as we knew that this would only cause conflict that would disrupt our flow as a group. There was an equal divide in the amount of work that we all did; our contributions were fair and no one was lacking behind. In addition, my group members were great at keeping each other informed if one of us were not able to attend a group meeting; emails were sent out informing us what we missed and ideas that were formulated. Everyone in my group worked according to deadlines and in synchronization with each other; we did not have to nag anyone to complete work or wait on a member to complete their task.
Critical thinking is a significant and essential topic in recent education. The strategy of critical thinking skills helps identify areas in one's courses as the suitable place to highlight, expand and use some problems in exams that test students' critical thinking skills.
