Do you really know someone? In the novel 19 minutes this question goes through the reader's mind a lot. Thinking you know one person and not can lead to more than you expect. This novel goes through the life and actions of Peter Houghton, Josie Cormier and other characters as they go through a tragic event. This novel goes through the riveting and tragic school shooting that takes place in the local high school. Unexpected characters take many twists and turns and many lies hide the truth but eventually the truth will weave its way out. Nobody knows Peter. He’s the shy guy, the one you don’t notice is in your class till it’s too late. Growing up, Peter didn’t exactly fit in; he even pretended to be like the other boys but it never worked. The other boys bullied him since the first day of kindergarten. This bullying lead to physical and verbal abuse, which did not help young Peter grow up. Along with all the taunting, during this time his best friend, Josie Cormier, falls to the hope of popularity. Now as Peter is a freshman he has lost his only friend for good to the enemy. Josie leaving Peter in sixth grade is one of those moments. The author draws the attention of the reader by allowing the reader to easily relate to Josie. She seems to be a good girl but throughout the book you learn she might not be as good as she seems. Her boyfriend is Matt Rytson, he is the king of the school. Josie doesn’t really love him though, she pretends because she knows that if she ends things there goes her popularity. Matt doesn’t treat her well either. He also is one of many to pick on Peter throughout his whole life. Josie gets tired of this too and hates to admit it but she feels bad for leaving Peter in the dust.
