Since the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) inception in 1906 there have been laws in place to protect the amateurism status of its student athletes. Over the last 100 years the NCAA has morphed into a multimillion dollar business. The success and revenue that student athletes have brought the NCAA and its member institutions has sparked a debate of whether or not to compensate players for paying. Research in the field has focused on the debate and reasons to pay players and reasons not to. There has been little attempt to assert the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of the student athletes. The purpose of this study is to examine what the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of the student athletes towards NCAA amateurism laws. Informal face to face interviews with Division 1 student athletes at universities in Indiana will be conducted to get an analysis of the attitudes, opinions, and feelings Division 1 student athletes have towards NCAA Amateurism laws.

In my previous two speeches I explored the issue of paying college athletes and the ethical and moral implications it has. In this paper I will formally address the issue using historical background, and, after showing both sides of the argument, I will convince you, the reader, that paying college athletes is a moral justice through the ethical theories of Deontology.

It is not that rare to see a coach in any sport with high expectation for their players. In all sports, there are many coaches are motivated topush their players to their limits to win a championship. Sometimes though, a coach’s fervent passion for success may cause them to lose sight of proper ethical behavior towards their players and the players’ parents. Recently, Mike Rice, former basketball coach for Rutgers University, was fired for abusive behavior towards his players. The role of physicians employed by professional sports teams creates conflicts of interest and raises ethical concerns. The team physicians have a moral obligation to promote the health of their patients, but their actions are heavily influenced by outside variables and by the patient’s susceptibility to influence and personal characteristics. The opposing need to protect the athlete’s health and the player’s desire to succeed interferes with the physician’s ability to make ethical decisions and impedes promises to commitments and adopted health care virtues. The Health and fitness industry have many ethical issues involved which was very interesting to me. I have never purchased a membership at a health club, but from the reading I learned a lot about how they operate. It amazed me that health clubs push their sales representatives to get 200-300 new members a month (Amend, 1992). This is a large amount of people for such a short amount a time, which means some members are not fully aware of the fine print of the membership agreement. Also the reading mentions that more than half of instructors at these clubs do not have valid certification (Copeland et al, 1988),. This is unethical because the members pay each month for the service of a qualified staff member to assist them in exercise and fitness. Safety of the members could also be at risk working out with a non-qualified trainer. Learning how these companies do business make me want to hold off as long as possible to join a gym.
Sponsorships have been a common element of high school sports for decades. This partnership allows for the funding of stadiums, locker rooms, and jerseys; therefore, benefiting the overall sports experience. By integrating corporate ads into other academic vicinities such as the library and cafeteria, the motivations of the partnerships become unclear. By implementing an academic environment free from ads and corporate influence, the capability for students to develop their own ideologies and opinions is protected and encouraged.
In an interview on the Mike Lupica’s radio show Kentucky’s head basketball coach John Calipari said, "All I can tell you is this: if it happens on your campus, and it happens with your assistants and those people, you probably have a pretty good idea of what's going on.” He also says, "If it happens back in their hometown, it happens back with their family or other ways, there's no way you can know. You just don't know. So all I would say is most coaches have an idea if it happened on their campus. Gambling in sports has always been an issue of controversy for many decades and continues to be an issue until today. Many states take their initiative to bust down on gambling by prohibiting and imposing laws to prevent it with the exception of Nevada. As recently as last week on May 14th, 2018, the Supreme Court allowed sports gambling around the country, while backing up New Jersey’s push to allow sports gambling. New Jersey and Chris Christie challenged the federal ban. The argument that was stated is that it violates the Tenth Amendment, which the Supreme Court has said prohibits federal laws that compel states to carry out federal dictates. The gambling law, Christie said, “commandeered the states by forcing them to prohibit sports wagering”

The main characters in this story were Zach Wahhsted, Alan Mender, and Joey Mender. Zach Wahhsted was a schizophrenic sixteen year. He often hallucinates voices and people; but when ever he would forget to take his medication, he would hear two voices that would tell him to kill himself. Zach had a hard time understanding what was real and what was in his head. Alan Mender was a seventeen year old who grew up in a rough neighborhood with his little brother and their mom, who was diagnosed with cancer. He has a kind disposition, but lives in rough circumstances. Joey Mender was a fourteen year old younger brother of Alan Mender, who also lived with his mother, he is temperamental and thought zach was just a retard.
The acts of crime have existed long before laws have existed. But because crimes do and will occur, laws need to be established and enforced to protect the innocent from harm and/or wrongdoing by another. Laws have been and still are being made to help prevent crimes from happening and to stop existing crimes from occurring. These unlawful acts range in a variety of categories. These categories are then put into subgroups to help specify a more accurate concentration on this issue. Because crimes are better focused on in categorized groups, more helpful research has been established to better understand and lessen the risk of these crimes from occurring to others throughout their everyday lives.
There is need for ethics in sports within athletic competition today. Without ethics, there are no moral grounds or rules with which to lead a healthy, competitive athletic lifestyle today. Whether young or old, all athletes struggle creating a strong foundation within a world of winning and losing. Where does this foundation originate from? Ethics and sports go hand-in-hand.
