A lighthouse is a structure that warns and navigates ships at night as they near land, creating specific signals for guidance. In Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse, the Lighthouse stands a monument to motivation for completion of long-term goals. Every character’s goals guides him or her through life, and the way that each person sees the world depends on goals they make. Some characters’ goals relate directly to the Lighthouse, others indirectly. Some goals abstractly relate to the Lighthouse. The omnipresent structure pours its guiding light over every character and every action.
The spouses Ramsey have Shiva and Parvati-like roles in life, and their goals correspond to these roles. Mr. Ramsey differs in that he separates unconscious goals from conscious goals. Subconsciously, Mr. Ramsey manifests the character of destruction. His role is necessary to the well being of the family; though he seems at times to suck life from others with his bitter pessimism, his role is as important as the role of his wife, the giver and the nurturer. Mr. Ramsey exists in order to balance his wife’s personality. His rage complements her love.
Consciously, Mr. Ramsey aspires to intellectual enlightenment through his philosophizing. His attitude in traveling to the Lighthouse mirrors his attitude towards attaining this goal. Mr. Ramsey has no hope that he will be able to reach either, and almost gives up both before trying, shifting the blame from him to outside forces. The trip to the lighthouse was unattainable because of conditions that do not have to do with neither him nor the goal: the weather conditions were not easily sailable. Intellectual enlightenment will be unattainable because of conditions that do not have to do with either him or the goal, as well. “He would have written better books if he had not married (Woolf 69).” His marriage and children become the scapegoat for this goal not being attained. Mr. Ramsey makes excuses for not becoming intellectually enlightened in the same vain that he makes excuses for not sailing to the Lighthouse.
Mrs. Ramsey is the ideal wife and mother. She uses her love to create and build, not in the physical sense, but more in the sense of relationship, community, and hope building. She is perhaps the most successful of the characters, in that her goals are she feels she has become her goal: one who helps people, brings them tog...

Just when she thinks that she cannot make a painting worth painting, she hears of Mr. Ramsey, Cam and James’ landing to the lighthouse. ““He has landed,” she said aloud. “It is finished (208).”” The thoughts of the Lighthouse and the Ramseys at it inspire her suddenly, and she completes the picture, tying everything together and complimenting each piece at the same time, like Mrs. Ramsey had done when she was still alive. “Yes, she thought, laying down her brush in extreme fatigue, I have had my vision (209).” The completion of this painting resulted in Lily’s attaining self-confidence, and the successful portrayal of Mrs. Ramsey
From far away, the lighthouse looks mammoth: a towering structure whose duty is noble and inspires reverence. Similarly daunting are the goals that one sets ten years before the goals can be completed, such as Lily Briscoe’s painting and James’ mending of the relationship with his father. The Lighthouse represents the struggle to attain a goal, and the light it shines the path one must take. The goals accomplished and the Lighthouse up close are both more friendly, pretty, and manageable, as characters in To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf demonstrate.
...He is still anchored to his past and transmits the message that one makes their own choices and should be satisfied with their lives. Moreover, the story shows that one should not be extremely rigid and refuse to change their beliefs and that people should be willing to adapt to new customs in order to prevent isolation. Lastly, reader is able to understand that sacrifice is an important part of life and that nothing can be achieved without it. Boats are often used as symbols to represent a journey through life, and like a captain of a boat which is setting sail, the narrator feels that his journey is only just beginning and realizes that everyone is in charge of their own life. Despite the wind that can sometimes blow feverishly and the waves that may slow the journey, the boat should not change its course and is ultimately responsible for completing its voyage.
Stephen Crane’s short story, “The Open Boat” speaks directly to Jack London’s own story, “To Build A Fire” in their applications of naturalism and views on humanity. Both writers are pessimistic in their views of humanity and are acutely aware of the natural world. The representations of their characters show humans who believe that they are strong and can ably survive, but these characters many times overestimate themselves which can lead to an understanding of their own mortality as they face down death.
In regards to the unpainted house: At the end of the book, only a corner of the house needs painting to be complete. It would have been very easy for our author to have completely finished in painting the house. However, that’s not what the premise nor the promise of the book contains. There is a big difference in completing a challenge, and being successful. Although life’s problems and challenges are never ending, the success in dealing with a challenge has more to do with the way it is done than in its completion. ‘The joy is certainly in the journey’ when reading the novel, ‘A Painted House’.
The scene concludes with Selden noting that “noble buoyancy of her attitude, its suggestion of soaring grace, revealed the touch of poetry in her beauty that Selden always felt in her presence, yet lost the sense of when he was not with her. Its expression was now so vivid that for the first time he seemed to see before him the real Lily Bart, divested of the trivialities of her little world, and catching for a moment a note of that eternal harmony of which her beauty was a part”, shortly followed by the exchange between Gerty and Selden mentioned at the outset wherein Gerty says “Don't you like her best in that simple dress? It makes her look like the real Lily—the Lily I know” (XX). For Selden the “real Lily Bart” is her staged beauty and that she truly is just a beautiful spectacle to be admired from afar, shown through how the “poetry in her beauty that Selden always felt in her presence” is very much temporary because once he is not viewing the spectacle that is Lily’s beauty, it is gone, and it takes Selden literally seeing Lily as a work of art in the tableaux to realize this. Gerty, on the other hand, believes that this is the “real Lily” because she chose a simple painting and is presented in an unostentatious way. The problem with the “real Lily” therefore is that her

Through the words on the page the reader gains an idea of how Solnit thinks about the world and how her past has shaped her. Solnit is a wanderer who is always curious about what lies beyond the next horizon. The theme of wandering, and of the eternal quest runs throughout the first story and Solnit makes it clear that curiosity is the main factor that has shaped her outlook on life. Journeys of discovery are important in helping humanity discover themselves and it is this self discovery that Solnit focuses on in her stories.
She describes the September morning as “mild, benignant, yet with a keener breath than the summer months.” She then goes on to describe the field outside her window, using word choice that is quite the opposite of words that would be used to describe a depressing story. She depicts the exact opposite of death, and creates a feeling of joy, happiness, and life to the world outside her room. After this, she goes into great detail about the “festivities” of the rooks among the treetops, and how they “soared round the treetops until it looked as if a vast net with thousands of black knots in it had been cast up into the air”. There is so much going on around her that “it was difficult to keep the eyes strictly turned upon the book.” Descriptions like these are no way to describe a seemingly depressing story about a moth, but by using these, joyful descriptions, Woolf connects everything happening outside to a single strand of energy. These images set a lively tone for the world around her, and now allow her to further introduce the moth into the story.

Finally, I will now discuss the repercussions of the wife role and the mask of motherhood on Eva’s relationship with Kevin. Ruddick states, “a ‘good mother’ may well be praised for colluding in her own subordination, with destructive consequences to her and her children” (104). Accordingly, the mask of motherhood strips Eva of her authenticity and integrity, and as it becomes her way of life, it diminishes her power (Maushart 463). Her “anger at the conditions of motherhood…become translated into anger at the child,” so that her relationship with Kevin becomes controlled by the wife role and mask of motherhood (Rich 52). This creates a curious response that demands a change in Bub`s awareness. However, the reader then follows a path of compassion when Bub lowers his self-conscious shield, shares an intimate friendship, and goes through an epiphany. The tone of sincerity directs us to an ambiguous ending which leaves a question that readers must answer: What is Bub`s epiphany?
They represent Lily's only connection to her deceased mother, besides her blurred memories. At one point in the novel, when Lily is talking to August, August hands Lily a photograph from the past of Lily and her mother. Lily thinks to herself, "I didn't care about anything on this earth except the way her face was tipped toward mine, our noses just touching, how wide and gorgeous her smile was, like sparklers going off (Kidd 275). When Lily sees the image of her mother, she is assured that she was deeply loved. This gives her a sense of peace and relief that she has been longing for. Nevertheless, Lily still continues to struggle with the sadness and guilt of accidentally killing her mother. However, at the end of the novel when Lily is looking at a different photograph of her mother, Lily finally is relieved of the guilt that has burdened her for so long. She thinks, "In the photograph by my bed my mother is perpetually smiling on me. I guess I have forgiven us both, although sometimes in the night my dreams will take me back to the sadness, and I have to wake up and forgive us again" (Kidd 301). Lily is beginning to move on from pain and guilt that has burdened her for so long. Through forgiving herself, Lily is freed from the torment she has held inside of her for as long as she can
Throughout “To the Lighthouse”, Woolf explores Lily Brisco and her desire to break with cultural stereotypes. Lily is depicted as a middle aged woman’s, who places a higher importance on her success in painting rather than that of marriage. This conflict will prove difficult to manage against society and those around her like Mrs. Ramsey. All through the novel Lily often feels the pressure to conform to certain gender roles, and from time to time can be seen doubting herself. It clearly weighs heavily on her mind as she goes about creating her painting. As she says in her thoughts “ Even while she looked at the mass, at the line, at the color, Mrs. Ramsay sitting in the window with James, she kept a feeler on her surrounding lest someone should creep up” (13). She undeniably knows that by choosing painting over more conventional paths like marriage is going to force her to stand out, and therefore becomes self conscious of even her painting. Woolf, therefore, takes advantage of the lyrical short stories’ structure to create a liminal space that both breaks through barriers to form a unified, impressionistic world and to emphasize the imposing negative aspects of such a transitory structure. As a result, Woolf prompts the reader to question whether the liminal space created within the short story is positive in its ability to unite nature and human or negative in its apparent unsustainability. Regardless, the form and structure of the short story are pivotal in Kew Gardens. Without the liminal space of the short story, it is questionable if Woolf could have succeeded in creating the unstable, yet peaceful, world in Kew Gardens.
Mrs. Ramsay embodies the traditional, ideal woman. She is a wife and mother. She sees her role as being a supporter to her husband, her children, and to the people around her. Mrs. Ramsay is occupied with matronly duties, such as knitting socks and running errands. She is devoted to her children. She sympathizes with James, understanding his disappointment at not being able to go to the lighthouse. She looks through a catalog for pictures for him to cut out. She also reads fairy tales to James. Mrs. Ramsay is a kind and devoted mother.
