In Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse”, the struggle to secure and proclaim female freedom is constantly challenged by social normalcy. This clash between what the traditional female ideologies should be and those who challenge them, can be seen best in the character of Lily Brisco. She represents the rosy picture of a woman that ends up challenging social norms throughout the novel to effectively achieve a sense of freedom and individuality by the end. Woolf through out the novel shows Lily’s break from conventional female in multiply ways, from a comparison between her and Mrs.Ramsey, Lily’s own stream of consciousness, as well as her own painting. Throughout “To the Lighthouse”, Woolf explores Lily Brisco and her desire to break with cultural stereotypes. Lily is depicted as a middle aged woman’s, who places a higher importance on her success in painting rather than that of marriage. This conflict will prove difficult to manage against society and those around her like Mrs. Ramsey. All through the novel Lily often feels the pressure to conform to certain gender roles, and from time to time can be seen doubting herself. It clearly weighs heavily on her mind as she goes about creating her painting. As she says in her thoughts “ Even while she looked at the mass, at the line, at the color, Mrs. Ramsay sitting in the window with James, she kept a feeler on her surrounding lest someone should creep up” (13). She undeniably knows that by choosing painting over more conventional paths like marriage is going to force her to stand out, and therefore becomes self conscious of even her painting. The painting itself stands for a clear break from social norms, yet she does not want anyone to see it because she is not entirely confide... ... middle of paper ... ... paints it so “ the tree [is] further in the middle;”. By placing the tree in her picture towards the middle she is able to take up the otherwise “awkward space”. The reader can interpret the tree and being Lily herself, and by moving the tree to the center of the painting, she is showing that she is committed to be liberated female standing. This continues to the last part of the book when Lily finally is able to establish herself as woman free of the social confines. Woolf writes “ With a sudden intensity, as if she saw it clear for a second, she drew a line there, in the center. It was done;” (154). This final line of the painting, represents a division between the old social system and the one that Lily stands for. Lily is finally comfortable with her choices. Works Cited Woolf, Virginia. The tableaux vivants scene in Edith Wharton’s House of Mirth is pivotal to the understanding of Lily Bart as a character. The passage not only highlights her precarious state in high-society, but it also contains one of the only instances where Lily feels truly comfortable and confident. Over the course of the description of Lily’s staging of her own tableaux, she goes from being a piece of art on display, to an artist carefully working to exhibit her own beauty. However, the contradictory reception from the audience to her intentions when her tableaux is presented, conveys her hubris in both her beauty and her ability to create visual representations of art. The scene concludes with, Gerty Farish, in response to seeing Lily’s tableaux, saying,

With her diaries, novels and poems, she stunned her readers with something they have not seen much before: women rebelling. Woolf was frustrated with women and the untouched and suppressed skills they harbor. She once said, “Women have sat indoors all these millions of years, so that by this time the very walls are permeated by their created force, which has, indeed, so overcharged the capacity of bricks and mortar that it must needs harness itself to pens and brushes and business and politics” (Feminist 595). Woolf sought to eliminate the perceived ideas of women and enlighten readers of the skills that women possess.
To the Lighthouse and The Picture of Dorian Gray both present the dichotomy of legacy into male and female legacy. The women within Virginia Woolf’s novel come to see legacy as the “little daily miracles” of life (Woolf 161). Mrs. Ramsay is remembered for the small things she did such as the dinner she arranged in the first section of the novel and the time she spent with her children. Lily also addresses this idea at the end of the novel when she finally finishes her painting. Lily talks about how “[her painting] would be hung in attics” how “it would be destroyed” and she concludes “But what did that matter?” (208). Lilly is not worried about the future of this painting. She has a feeling of self-satisfaction with her painting and knows that everything comes to an end. She is happy with the small moment where she completed her painting and she sees her painting as he little personal legacy. While the women of the novel focus on the small moments within life Mr. Ramsay focuses on the larger idea of a legacy. He desires a legacy that will surpass time and spread throughout the world. They represent Lily's only connection to her deceased mother, besides her blurred memories. At one point in the novel, when Lily is talking to August, August hands Lily a photograph from the past of Lily and her mother. Lily thinks to herself, "I didn't care about anything on this earth except the way her face was tipped toward mine, our noses just touching, how wide and gorgeous her smile was, like sparklers going off (Kidd 275). When Lily sees the image of her mother, she is assured that she was deeply loved. This gives her a sense of peace and relief that she has been longing for. Nevertheless, Lily still continues to struggle with the sadness and guilt of accidentally killing her mother. However, at the end of the novel when Lily is looking at a different photograph of her mother, Lily finally is relieved of the guilt that has burdened her for so long. She thinks, "In the photograph by my bed my mother is perpetually smiling on me. I guess I have forgiven us both, although sometimes in the night my dreams will take me back to the sadness, and I have to wake up and forgive us again" (Kidd 301). Lily is beginning to move on from pain and guilt that has burdened her for so long. Through forgiving herself, Lily is freed from the torment she has held inside of her for as long as she can

To the Lighthouse is an autobiographical production of Virginia Woolf that captures a modern feminist visionary thrusted in a patriarchal Victorian society, as embodied by Lily Briscoe. Lily’s unique feminist vision and her ability to transcend artistic and patriarchal conventions progressively allows her to locate her quest for identity as an aestheticized epiphany journey. However, no matter how Woolf attempts to present Lily’s aestheticized exploration of her identity as a radical opposition to patriarchy alone, therein lies a specific aspect of feminism that Lily secretly wants to achieve. Woolf presents three characters who embody three different gender roles. Mrs. Ramsay is the dutiful wife and mother. Mr. Ramsay is the domineering patriarch. Lily Briscoe is an independent, aspiring woman. Woolf sets these three roles in contrast with each other. She allows the reader to see the power and influence each character has. Mrs. Ramsay’s submissive and supportive nature arouses admiration. Mr. Ramsay’s condescending manner provokes animosity. From far away, the lighthouse looks mammoth: a towering structure whose duty is noble and inspires reverence. Similarly daunting are the goals that one sets ten years before the goals can be completed, such as Lily Briscoe’s painting and James’ mending of the relationship with his father. Virginia Woolf's 'To the Lighthouse' is a fine example of modernist literature, like her fellow modernist writers James Joyce and D.H Lawrence. This novel in particular is of the most autobiographical. The similarities between the story and Woolf's own life are not accidental. The lighthouse, situations and deaths within the novel are all parallel to Woolf's childhood, she wrote in her diary 'I used to think of [father] & mother daily; but writing The Lighthouse, laid them in my mind ….(I believe this to be true – that I was obsessed by them both, unheathily; & writing of them was a necessary act). Woolf, Diary, 28 November 1928) Woolf like many other modernist writers uses stream of consciousness, this novel in particular features very little dialogue, preferring one thought, memory or idea to trigger another, providing an honest if not reliable account of the characters lives. There novels motifs are paired with many of the novels images. The novel features two main motifs that Woolf appears to be interested in examining, firstly we notice the relationships' between men and women and the other appears to be Woolf's use of parenthesis. The novels images only become apparent once these motifs have been explored, allowing the reader to examine the relationships between the different characters.
Many female writers see themselves as advocates for other creative females to help find their voice as a woman. Although this may be true, writer Virginia Woolf made her life mission to help women find their voice as a writer, no gender attached. She believed women had the creativity and power to write, not better than men, but as equals. Yet throughout history, women have been neglected in a sense, and Woolf attempted to find them. In her essay, A Room of One’s Own, she focuses on what is meant by connecting the terms, women and fiction. Woolf divided this thought into three categories: what women are like throughout history, women and the fiction they write, and women and the fiction written about them. When one thinks of women and fiction, what they think of; Woolf tried to answer this question through the discovery of the female within literature in her writing.
