How does society bring about friends? Society plays a huge role in who people make friends with. The Society around is made up of people who spend each and every day together and are very familiar with each other. A community is a great example of a society which influences the acquaintances made by people and the company that they keep. For young ones growing up, a huge concern is with the company that they keep and the friends that they make. Someone with perfectly good intentions and a positive motive in life could be greatly influences by a group of people with opposite motives in life. Throughout the prominent television series, also known as Friends, the writers carefully included and manipulated many sociological concepts. The writers of the series incorporated such concepts that many watchers hardly noticed that they were in the episodes. A few concepts weaved into the television series included an ingroup, culture, the social learning theory, and leadership styles. The Friends characters often learned from each other throughout the series through some sociological concepts.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, [society is a] community, nation, or broad grouping of people having common traditions, institutions, and collective activities and interests (Society def. 3). For one to feel supported and content, they must be admitted into a society. This is evident in All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury and Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. It is imperative for society to be the most highly valued as should one desire happiness, then the society must accept their actions, words, and identity though it may take time, and a society's consensus produces peace.
“The 1% of US students with labels of severe disabilities including mental retardation have been historically excluded from ‘inclusive’ education” (Bentley, 2008, p. 543). Laws such as PL 94-142 and “No Child Left Behind” (as cited in Bentley), say that ‘public school students with all types of disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment—‘to the maximum extent possible…with children who do not have disabilities’ the majority of these students with special education labels, such as, mental retardation and multiple disabilities are still isolated in special education classrooms (Bentley, 2008, p. 545). Wehmeyer (as cited in Bentley), points out that mere access does not promote authentic participation (Bentley, 2008, p. 546). Burkowski et al (as cited in Webster and Cater), “Friendship has been defined as a bond between two individuals that is stable across time and involves mutual affection, mutual preference and having fun together” (Webster and Carter, 2007, p. 201). It is up to parents, teachers and other paraprofessionals to seek ways to facilitate and encourage the types of positive interactions that will foster these types of friendships. If done successfully all students will benefit and there will be true inclusion.
My parents always treated my peers as if they were their own kids and they always had a perfect bond. My parent’s interaction with the school was quite overwhelming. They always went to my parent- teacher conferences, volunteered when we had student activities, helped out in school when help was need. They bonded with the teachers very well and even outside of school they maintained communication. Every single day when my siblings and I got home from school, mom would sit down with us after dinner and help us with homework and to study. She always found a way to make homework and studying entertaining and not boring. My community would make tournaments and have activities for the kids to go and participate. Including but not limited to basketball tournaments and coloring contests. When it came to having field day at school, my community would help support it by volunteering, making sure we were safe and having fun. When there were soccer games and baseball games at school, people from my community would come and cheer for the kids playing. There was never a dull moment when it came to the kids in the community. In early childhood, friendships are associated with a particular activity. During middle childhood, children focus more on bonds and trust when it comes to making friends. Children start to use selective association meaning that children start to pair off with people that have the same interests as them. Sociable kids are attracted to other sociable kids and children who are shy tend to get left behind.
Society is a result of our interactions, and society guides our interactions. This all stems from social construction. Social construction conveys values, ideas and traditions. These values, ideals and traditions are created and become traditions that are then passed on. These traditions then come to be perceived as natural rather than cultural, which is often how media will display it and society unknowingly accepts.
Before taking this class, my understanding between each individual and the whole society is that every individuals as the gear are connected together to become a society like a machine. That is, human beings build the society. However, the class gave me bigger view of the relationship between the people and the society. Discussing about the relationship between me and the broader social world is based on how all human beings and the broader social world effect together. In high school, it seems super fun having the same friends for four years long, in most of the cases they are friends since middle school and that’s when they start calling each other best friends; However, having too many friends in the same class not always is a great idea. Some could be not a problem but sometimes it is a disaster when two or more students know well each other. They can distract the entire class and become a nightmare to the teacher and to the rest of the class. But, what happen when they transcend to a new lifestyle all that friendship that was built in high school comes to an end. After graduation, all students take their own path and that friendship built for years suddenly banished. On the other hand, when young students get to college they have to adapt to a new world. They might not have the same friends but they surely will have better ones with the same goals and levels as theirs own.
These types of social groups can make a person feel left out or humiliated. Some cliques will “jeer at others, humiliate people or choose to exclude” others (“How Cliques Make Kids Feel Left Out.” ). Excluding a person could make them sit away from the group and feel isolated. Cliques are formed and separated from everyone else due to different reasons. They can separate due to race, gender, and social class. This group can also be caused by a feeling of homophily, to stick around people that share a common interest, which affects the process of “peer selection and socialization” (Goodwin). Cliques could also separate themselves through popularity. A group of people may look at themselves as “’cooler’ or better than others” (“Friends, Cliques and Peer Pressure | Barnardos Ireland.”).This type of judging could affect the way other groups look at themselves and others.
