Renaissance art is a component of the Renaissance, it was a period of literary, artistic, and scientific revival occurred in Europe in the sixteenth century. The key aspect of the Renaissance period as is the renewal of themes and art in Europe after the middle ages. For the first time, art enters the private sphere; the works are no longer just driven by religious or secular power, but enter houses. The renewal of philosophical reflection provides artists with new ideas. Painters and sculptors do not hesitate to represent the beauty of the naked human body. The four great masters of art create art forms that are still references for many artists from the renaissance till today.
Katherine Sanger writes in her article David Michelangelo vs Donatello’s, “The sculptures of David that were created by Michelangelo and Donatello are so different that the only thing I can find in common with them is their title. Donatello’s sculpture is bronze, stands only five feet tall, and appears to be a young, possibly teenage boy. Michelangelo’s is marble, approximately eighteen feet tall, and seems to be fully-grown man. Donatello’s work seems to have more Greco-Roman and Hellenistic influence than just the pure classical Greek hero influence of Michelangelo’s. The differences are amazing because even with them, we can still recognize the same character in each of them” (Sanger).

At that time Italy did not have a powerful central government, and cities were seeking for their independence. A little over 6 feet of marble, Donatello’s first version of David was one of his earliest known commisions that mark the beginning of his artistic career. He was commissioned by the Operai of the cathedral of Florence to create a David statue to decorate one of the buttresses. The statue ended up looking too small when placed high up, so it was taken down and later requested to be displayed in Palazzo Vecchio, the town hall. Many historians dismiss his first version of David, calling this piece unoriginal and nothing to praise.
David, a young Israelite teenager, is a character from a Biblical story who defeats and kills Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, with a stone. The story shows how a young man overcomes oppositions and is a popular subject among various artists. David was famously depicted by Michelangelo and Bernini, who both used marble to create their statues. Both Michelangelo’s David and Bernini’s David statues are positioned in contrapposto, the asymmetrical positioning of the human form where all the weight of the form is positioned on one foot resulting in a curving of the torso and no alignment in the shoulders. Each figure also shows emotion and tension in their faces and body. Although they both chose David as the subject matter, the way they portray David differs stylistically, when they were made and the purpose of the works.
Where one is a bronze statue with a singular figure, the other is a painting with a central figure, from which the story is built. However, their contrasts go beyond what they are made of, to their different subjects and their complexity. Donatello’s David shows youthful beauty and strength, which he confidently exudes through his body language. Standing with one foot atop Goliath’s severed head while turning his body to balance his weight to the other leg, this statue is a clear example of Contrapposto, which the Greeks invented and introduced into their sculptures. When a person thinks about the Renaissance, the first thing that comes to mind is more than likely knights in shining armor fighting off dragons and saving the princess. However, lets look at a more realistic approach towards the Renaissance and talk about what really brings out the brilliance and the beauty of this time period, which is nonetheless the art that was informed and inspired by classical antiquity from the Greeks and the Roman civilizations. The artist during the Renaissance was pure genius and masters of draftsmanship and distinguished techniques in displaying a command of lighting, flawless perspectives of image, accurate portrayals of flora and fauna, and the complexities and intricacies of human anatomy and physiology. This period was heavily influenced by religious relic and concepts and these artists expanded beyond the ideas of religious intuitive. Renaissance art was a movement of rediscovering people as individuals as a person and not just another being and this proven through the faces on paintings that have profound and very distinctive displays and expression of emotion. Artwork during the Renaissance became the it thing to do spreading into the households of wealthy merchants, bankers, popes, and princes spending large amounts of money on portraits, miniatures, and still life photographs.

Donatello was the son of Niccolo di Betto Bardi, a Florentine wool carder. It is not known how he started his career but probably learned stone carving from one of the sculptors working for the cathedral of Florence about 1400. Sometime between 1404 and 1407 he became a member of the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti who was a sculptor in bronze. Donatello’s earliest work was a marble statue of David. The “David” was originally made for the cathedral but was moved in 1416 to the Palazzo Vecchio which is a city hall where it long stood as a civic patriotic symbol. From the sixteenth century on it was eclipsed by the gigantic “David” of Michelangelo which served the same purpose. Other of Donatello’s early works which were still partly gothic are the impressive seated marble figure of St. John the Evangelist for the cathedral and a wooden crucifix in the church of Sta. Croce.
Donatello created many bronze sculptures. A huge achievement was his gilt bronze Herod’s feast. Another gilt bronze he made was St. Louis of Toulouse sculpture. One huge milestone was he made the first freestanding bronze naked bronze sculpture (Lewine par 2, 4). He designed twin bronze pulpit for San Lorenzo. The most important bronze sculpture was David was his first free-standing nude statue of the renaissance (“Donatello” par 2, 4).
Michelangelo’s David is one of the most well-known statues of the Renaissance, and even of all time. It is known to be one of the best example of Renaissance art. It stands tall at 17 feet, and was originally commissioned for a tribune of statues on the Florence Cathedral. Because of the story it depicts, that in which David overcomes a massive giant, it has become a symbol for Florence, representing its independence and how, even with its size, is still a mighty and strong city.
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, as its name entails. In Italy, more people were becoming literate and more books were being printed. More scientific discoveries were being made and therefore more theories were being published. In this time of intellectual prosperity, art also made a great leap. Perspective was the main change during this time period, and throughout the years, starting around 1400, it became more involved and more intricate. Eventually artists were so adept at using it, that it became the primary way to insert intimacy and feelings of emotion into a painting. This evolution of technique paved the way for later artists to play with new approaches to allow the viewer to experience an image in different ways.
Michelangelo’s David does not react with the surroundings but it stands alone with the little movements disguised behind it. The sculpture brings out David as a soldier preparing for war and not a person engaged in a battle (Miller, Vandome, & McBrewster, 2010). The hands are larger than normal and the arms are longer than his body. This is meant to illustrate the renaissance period. In contrast, the Bernini’s David has aspects of motion, showing that he was already engaged in the battle with Goliath. The idea of movement is enhanced by the loosely flowing robes. In addition, the sculpture demonstrates that unlike Michelangelo’s David that has longer hands, Bernini’s David has contracted muscles. The Michelangelo’s sculpture was created during Renascence period while the Bernini’s sculpture was done during the Baroque period.
Even with the fact that his David was depicted before the battle actually takes place, Michelangelo was probably inspired by concepts similar to the ones that inspired Donatello. Both artists intended to create artwork that would contrast feelings in Rome and that would make it possible for people in Florence to develop a sense of belonging to the state. Furthermore, with the Medici family sponsoring both artworks, it only seems natural that these artists wanted to create masterpieces that would trigger intense feelings in anyone seeing them and that would make the family and the city as a whole identify with David’s story.
The Renaissance was a time characterized by a curiosity about human experience and the world around Renaissance thinkers. A main focus of the Renaissance was ancient Rome and Greece, which people studied in order to get a better understanding of their world. Artists and writers were able to express the ideals of the Renaissance by using an element of realism in their work that people of the time could easily relate to and understand.
In the early 1440’s, the Medici family commissioned Donatello to sculpt what would become one of the greatest sculptures of the 15th century. Donatello’s David is depicted as a youthful David, which is complete opposite of how David was depicted in that time period. In the Middle Ages David was depicted as a King. In the sculpture David is in the nude, one foot on Goliaths severed head, which tells us it was after he took down the god-like goliath. Donatello’s David is considered a master piece of Western art, because of the way it relates to the classical past, yet it fits in perfectly with the Renaissance time period.
