In this mentorship I continue getting new experiences in each day. Providence Mount St. Vincent, TCU is an open door for new learning opportunity. I used to work for Providence Mount St Vincent as a nursing assistant about three years ago, back then TCU wasn’t there. PMSV’s MISSION: As people of Providence, we reveal God’s love for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, through our compassionate service; CORE VALUES: Respect, compassion, justice, excellence and stewardship; VISION: Together, as people of Providence, we answer the call of every person we serve: know me; care for me; ease my way. This principle motivated and structured me to be a better caring, passionate, treat resident as individual and respect residents wishes. In this mentorship I got lucky because I am able to find a nurse that willing to mentor me in TCU. According to the nursing educator he told me that “you are the first nursing student allowed on the TCU”. That made me very proud and prepared to do my best.
In TCU (Transitional Care Unit) mostly admitted patient who discharged right from hospitals with needs of maximum rehabilitation for recover. In TCU nurse to patient is maximum 1:8 ratio, which it gives more time and assessment time than long-term unit 1:20. Unless there are a very hard to find an RN all nurses on TCU are RN’s.
On my first day in TCU I focused on trying to adjusted and found where the equipment placed and how it worked like IV machine, and where to find medications, treatment supplies, and scavenger hunting, I also give care for three patient assessment and medication administration. I was able to change central line sterile dressing and hung IV normal saline my preceptor gave me a good complement. In lab we practice IV and helped me to perform with confidence. I helped with monthly recapping.
As a nurse we always have to use critical thinking, nursing judgment and prioritization. I am continuing using these skills. Finally, this is my midterm mentorship I am continuing learning and open myself to gain new experience and to be a successful nurse.

The general idea of, K, is that a nurse must have knowledge in the diversity of cultures, ethics, and education. The significance of this faction being that if the nurse is cognizant of the patient 's culture, beliefs, family values, support systems, and education level, a more thorough and comprehensive plan of care can be formulated. The premise of, S, is that a nurse must be skilled in the ability to communicate with and advocate for the patient, assess for and properly treat pain, and incorporate the needs and concerns of the patient and their family. The significance of this group and development of these skills include the achievement of pain control, increased rehabilitation periods, and an increase in patient/family satisfaction. The theme of, A, requires that a nurse maintains an open attitude toward the patient and to respect and validate the nurse-patient relationship, which will aid in a positive nurse-patient
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. By the end of the clinical rotation each student will have had a chance to focus on each of the six QSEN competencies: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. Learning these skills will also prepare the student nurses in future to delegate tasks when they qualify and become RN’s. In relation to my nursing practice, when I become a registered nurse, I will assist student nurses in their career by delegating tasks to them that are within their level of competence, as well as making sure that all tasks assigned to them are duly supervised and follow up on the delegated task. I will encourage them to seek clarification where necessary. Providing feedback and praising them for work well done is another thing I would bring into my practice. I will equally inform them through feedback of any task which did not work well and show them areas where they need to improve upon.
Nursing is a profession that requires a unique skill set. A few of the traits include compassion, understanding and empathy. Clayton State University has a goal to produce competent, compassionate, professional nurses with communication and technical skills. Clayton State’s School of Nursing has outlined nine program outcomes or concepts that are part of the Conceptual Curriculum Model. These concepts include caring, communication, critical thinking, human diversity, informatics, interdisciplinary collaboration, nursing therapeutics, professional development, and theory based practice. These program outcomes relate to three nurse and client transitions; health-illness transitions, developmental transitions and organizational transitions. In health care, it is necessary to be knowledgeable and advanced in many areas in order to provide efficient care; these concepts are the foundation for a healthy nurse and client relationship.
I enjoyed interacting with the patients, and my nurse. Karie, was amazing. She explained to me everything she did. The routine for each patient was very similar, and this repetition helped me anticipate what Karie needed and helped me feel fairly confident in assisting her with the new patients and their needs. On the other hand, I was extremely disappointed that I was not given the opportunity to administer an intravenous (IV) line. Karie was willing to allow me the opportunity after I watched her place an IV in three different patients, but her fourth patient was transported from a different hospital with peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line in place. It was beginning to get late in the day and the patients coming in was slowing down, so Karie told the nurses at the nursing station that I needed to practice IV’s, but no one had any to give. Although I was disappoint that the opportunity to insert an IV into a patient did not arise, I did gain much knowledge regarding the ODS unit. I am now familiar with the physical layout of the unit and what takes place with patients that go there. I know the role of the nurse. I believe with my determination and interpersonal skills, combined with a Georgetown University School of Nursing education, I will go above and beyond as a nurse and positively impact the lives of patients and their families. My short-term goals in nursing include earning a Doctorate in Nursing and becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. Ultimately, my career goal is to help reduce health disparities based on race, ethnicity and socioeconomic inequities in Cardiovascular Diseases and HIV/AIDS through both community-based research and nursing practice. “Nurses don’t wait until October to celebrate Make a Difference Day — they make a difference every day”, explains an unknown author. My main source of inspiration to become a nurse comes from an innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. I am also a person who thrives on being challenged and I always have new goals to achieve, so nursing suits me as few other careers offer as much diversity and learning opportunities so, attending Virginia Commonwealth University is something that has been my desire for the longest. The intentions that I have for when I become a nurse practitioner are to aid and care for the sick, as well as I am able but also to assist doctors and staff as well as I am capable.
Our course, Transition to Professional Nursing, is barely two weeks old and already I am being enlightened and challenged to expand my experience of nursing. I will attempt to explain my personal journey and experience thus far including how and why I got here, my beliefs about nursing and related values, and my visions for the future.
The health care system of today will be invaluable without the help of well-trained registered professional nurses. According to Wilkinson, Treas, Barnett, Smith (2016) registered nurses in today’s health care have the training required to develop a care plan with other health care workers that is specific for each patient in their care, instead of the same general approach for every patient. This is known as patient centered care because each patient is different from the other and the registered nurse role includes developing a good plan for every patient they care for. In performing such duties, registered nurses tend to create a strong bond with their patients by caring for their patients by all means possible. By caring for their patients, they tend to gain their patients and their families trust. According to Wilkinson et al. (2016) There are many support systems for patients in our communities that have good intentions of assisting sick people and those in need. Most of them are not known by the patient or their families. The registered nurse is the one who is in the position to inform the patient or family about such resources that may be very helpful for them if they are interested. By doing so, the patient knows that the nurse really cares about him/her and that feels very comforting and may help the patient get well
As mentioned by Hunter and Arthur (2016), one of the main reasons I could maintain and improve my practice was due to clinical placements. During clinical placements we are frequently being assessed and taught in dealing with real situations. Feelings As learning is a lifelong process, I’m sure there are many things I need to improve and learn to better myself. However, the lessons I learned during the course as a nursing student shall always remain as a bedrock for my future development.
I will need to keep assessing myself and setting new goals as the nursing profession and workplace are continuously changing. It will be necessary to be conversant with the environment before deciding how I will use my skills and experience to benefit myself and the society. I will keep scanning my surrounding environment to establish the most beneficial way to use my skills and experience.
Help improved my clinical skills and professional development, made me proactive and thus have learnt that reflection is an important tool for student nurse to improve on their practice.
